Don’t think I heard it called that until 1994, in the first season of “Friends”.

Opal, imagine how you’d feel if you and Earl were out in public, and Earl had forgotten to zip up his fly. Now imagine what would make that situation even more embarrassing.

The term originated with special forces like Navy Seals and Green Berets fighting in swamps not wearing underwear for practical reasons.

I wear my pink pajamas in the summer, when it’s hot.

I wear my flannel nighty, in the winter, when it’s not.

But sometimes in the springtime, and sometimes in the fall,

I jump between the sheets with nothing on at all!

In a similar vein, My father told me how his father’s mother wore these long, ankle-length dresses. She lived with them and when they were out in the field farming she would take a stance, and “ahem” water the crops. He found it outrageous. I said it was better than walking to the outhouse and back every time the tide came in.

Many years ago my 9 or 10 year old brother went off to camp with 14 pairs of clean briefs, name tapes sewn in and neatly folded. He came home with 14 pairs of clean briefs, neatly folded. I don’t think Mum ever found out if he just wore the same pair he had on when he left or he didn’t bother with any at all.

It means you are stuck using an outdated slang term from a 90s sitcom. It was used by a character generally depicted as a fool.
