I don’t know where Li’l Bobby Gorrell lives, but this Country, like the majority of countries, has always been, to a large extent, racist. Just look at the way Black troops were treated by other servicemen in WWI. The French people treated our Black troops much better than many of their officers did, and when they got home after the war it was worse yet.
I agree with the MLK quote. BUT. The critical word is “should”. The elephant is a racist. And he’s hiding behind the quote, not because he believes it, but because he believes it makes the Dems look bad. So when “should” is no longer broken, THEN we can treat people without reference to their race. How will we know? When someone wearing a Maga hat doesn’t even notice that the couple passing him in the street is gay and mixed race, but DOES notice that they’re pushing a very cool pram.
Um, Bob….what? Nothing in this strip makes even an iota of sense. Firstly, that statement by the elephant has nothing to do with Republican thought. Secondly, MLK did not only talk about the content of character of the individual. MLK also condemned systemic racism — policies and structures that made it impossible for black people to get ahead. Want just an example or two? The GI Bill — which was not open to black vets to the extent that it was to white vets, making college affordable for whites and out of reach for blacks. Levittown, set up for vets, specifically excluded black vets. Red lining — which still goes on — and mortgage schemes all shut black vets out of homeownership. THAT is systemic, and it meant a lot of black vets had no property to pass down to their kids.
“I believe that we should not view people as members of some group. I also believe that we’ve had 1 black President and 45 white ones, and the black one is the one who benefitted from his race.”
I think Gorrell is trying to launder Tucker Carlson talking points ‘well actually white people are the ones who are being oppressed’ and ‘how dare you say that white supremacy is a more dangerous threat than isis’ but in a slightly more subtle way.
actions speak louder than words Gorrell
A few weeks ago you did a cartoon against teaching children the true history of racism in America
https://www.gocomics.com/bobgorrell/2021/05/17
imagine if Germany suddenly refused to teach children about the Holocaust, and started saying that Germany was never a fascist country, and then passed laws to make it harder for Jewish citizens to vote.
one example from just this week
“A ceremony organizer turned off the microphone when the event’s keynote speaker, retired Army Lt. Col. Barnard Kemter, began sharing a story about freed Black slaves honoring deceased soldiers shortly after the end of the Civil War.”
Racism is labeling all poor people of color ‘welfare queens who are mooching off of the government’ while calling poor white people who blame their problems on minorities ‘economically anxious’
Racism is police peacefully arresting a white guy who just committed a mass shooting, but shooting a black teenager, because the officer could not tell the difference between a gun and a back of skittles.
Racism is calling people peacefully protesting terrorists and rioters, while calling white people, who stormed the Capitol, ‘tourists.’
Racism is closing polling places to make people of color wait hours to vote.
the GOP spent 8 years obstructing the first black president, stole his supreme court pick, and claimed, without evidence, that he wasn’t born in America.
This is a totally ludicrous toon! Repubs are for rolling the clock back to the Jim Crowe years when voter suppression was the norm and discrimination was everywhere. I thought Bob was showing some good sense, but this…no, he’s still a Dump man and Repub lacky.
Getting into dangerous territory if you want to be judged on character.. best you leave it at the color of your blood.. and across all nations, it’s red.
If you buy the first panel, you’ll buy the second. But it’s another cheap shot by Gorrell. The truth is that the Republicans DO NOT believe in individuality. You are expected to march lock-step with the other minions at the direction of Trump. If you do not, you will be censured by your state party apparatus and then ’primary’d’. If the Republican’s were actually concerned about the content of someone’s character, they would never have nominated a philandering crook and deeply troubled narcissist to higher office.
If only Trumpublicans actually believed and acted on the content of that speech. Their actions belie their words, so of course Democrats know Trumpublicans are racists. You only have to watch what they’re doing.
“I’m going to handicap the hell out of my opponent, and then suddenly stop and say that everyone is equal”… so the fact that you broke the legs of the opponent in the race, but now say “hey it is an even playing field, everyone is allowed to race without discrimination”… ignoring the fact that the legs are still broken.
Let’s pick two people, totally at random. How about, oh, George W. Bush and Donald J. Trump. How about those two?
How far would they have gone without their fathers? Both did sit in the White House, and both were harmful and destructive to our nation and the world.
Yet because they have wealthy, influential, powerful families they end up POTUS. Sure, not exactly skin color, but neither one were judged on whether or not they were qualified to be president.
Not because of their character. Not because of their leadership. Not because of any actual honest, positive quality. They got to where they were because of their Daddys.
To be fair, we should also consider Barack Obama. Who honestly did earn his time in the White House, without a rich Daddy. And, oh yes, Bill Clinton! And Jimmy Carter. And even Reagan and George HW.
What’s the difference here? W and Don are worth a fraction of those other men.
Gorrell, you are blind to the deliberate, systemic racism that runs rampant in our world. And the white, wealthy elite are the ones doing it. When was the last time you actually sat down and talked to a young black man or woman? Do you know any? Maybe one of your snow white children has married an African-American, I don’t know. Heck, I’m just assuming that you’re white here anyway.
Listen, Bob. You need to connect to some REAL African-Americans. Come to Louisville and speak to Charles Booker. Do some research before you declare that we have the capacity to judge solely on character, rather than on other factors like wealth and skin color.
Individualism and character are important to The Repulsican party? Then why do they spend so much time pounding everyone into the shackles of THE ORANGE IDIOT’S bizarre WORLD VISION? If they don’t worship the pile of hamberder leavings, they are first attacked by THE IDIOT and then by his MAGAt supporters. Fear tends to wear down character and kill individualism. Thus, the “rise” of the NEW GOP.
Perhaps the republicans are being judged by the content of their character, which sure makes being white “unfortunate” again, for anyone fool enough to compare US history with US conduct and “US mission statement”.

Unless they want to vote. In That case the Brown people in the city are less important that the white people in the country.

Guess which county has a lower percentage of minorities?
