I was surprised how much more popular the cardboard scratchers were over the corded ones. Messier, but my two love them. Live and learn and vacuum more often, I guess.
(Raven would eat both of them. They’re both cardboard.)
I have a cardboard cottage scratcher for them. Has been a while since I have seen one of them in it. Mostly they just sleep in it, though occasionally they use it as a scratcher. I was tempted to buy them a Christmas themed one las5 year, but resisted the temptation. So far I haven’t seen any this year.
I’ve never seen such an elaborate cardboard scratcher. Perhaps the children can use it as a house for their assorted dolls, action figures, and stuffed animals. Otherwise, I think it would make a lovely mansion for the robber mice gang!
A few years ago, a friend gave me an assortment of birthday gifts packed in a soft-sided crate. It’s about a foot square. After I emptied the crate, I set it on my bedroom floor. The next thing I knew, Pingpong had managed to get inside and curled up in it. She barely fit. I’ve seen each of my other cats in it since then. It’s especially funny to see Sunny (my largest cat) in that soft-sided crate.
Our cat Salem always slept with Simba, our 100 lb. German Shepard. We got Salem when Simba was a puppy, and he sort of became Simba’s pet. Simba would always put Salem in his doghouse when he went to sleep.
Salem would never play with a box/or sleep in one that Simba couldn’t fit into too. When Simba finally passed, we kept the doghouse for seven more years because Salem slept in it. It was funny when we got new neighbors and they saw the giant doghouse, looking for our enormous dog, and all they saw pop out of it was a little 6-8 lb. black cat.
Loaner Cat is not a box fan. I bought her a Halloween house from Target this year. It was a total pain to put together. Two stories, both floors were cardboard scratchers, it was nice and big and I figured it would fit her because she’s so fat…nothing. She took one sniff of it and walked away. Over to check out the box it came in, turned up her nose and that was that. I gave it to Thing 2 thinking maybe her three cats would love it and…nothing. Her bunnies sleep in it, but that’s it. *sigh
I hope the Woman isn’t planning on putting out a gingerbread house at the same time as the scratcher this Christmas season. If she is … well, at least Lupin will enjoy the mess.
My cats love the empty boxes, paper bags and of course the plastic rings you get from half gallon or gallon containers of milk or orange juice.
BTW, I love all the Monty Hall references I saw above. Puck would make a great game show host: perhaps like the one Richard Dawson (who did a great job on Family Feud back in the day) did with Arnold in a sci-fi film back in the late ’80s but it would be called “Running Cat” where a cat would have to maneuver around numerous obstacles in The Big Pink House or perhaps “Climbing for Catnip” might be better……
https://www.gocomics.com/our-super-adventure/2021/11/29 is surprisingly appropriate today. It’s quite chilly here this morning and I could use an extra cat or two.
During a change from carpeting to hard flooring in our 1996 Palm Harbor double wide in NW village of Catalina AZ.. A very young Shellie had a forest of boxes to inspect. One kept her entertained for a long time.
Sis’s dignified senior boss Onyx will take a pass on both, thanks – she doesn’t like enclosed spaces of any kind. Recently she’s developed the habit of peeing over the side of the litter box (she gets all 4 feet inside & the poops still go in, thank Ceiling Cat!) so sis tried a couple of enclosure bins with high sides, open tops, & access holes on the sides, but Onyx just looked in, said NOPE NOPE NOPE!, & went downstairs to the “regular” style litterbox. She wouldn’t even go into the clear bin, much less the opaque one…sis just sighed & resigned herself to putting pee pads on the floor around the litterboxes. She says, “Well, I’ll keep the fancy ones for the next cat…”
These things are designed by the pet industry for people who think their pets are their children. It’s too much for me. If I get one more e-mail from Chewy talking about my “fur-babies”, I’m going to retch.
Bought Russel a nice cat tower, and a cozy bed. He sleeps on our metal spiral stair (to the constant annoyance of our daughter) or in the box we keep our reusable shopping bags in.
My two boys received a Christmas theater last year. They love it, but Ziggy really loves it. He chews on it and scratches it at it all the time it’s in bad shape now though!
Abandoned kitties: Eleven days ago a carrier was left at our church door. Long story short, we took the carrier. Found a young mom cat and five weaned kittens. Again, long story short, we provided them with larger quarters and, of course, a litter box which had a hood. When we checked on them, all six were in the (still-clean) litter box. Sigh. Happy ending: All six found happy fur-ever homes, the mom cat even going with one of her kittens. I’m sure they’ll be provided with a “happy box” where they are. puuurrrrrrr…..
Now, the Woman has obviously lived with the cats a long time so, why is she surprised that the cats chose the cardboard box. My cats, I guess are weird. They’re not interested in boxes of any kind.
Lucy will not step one paw into any boxes or bags. Big Gray likes his boxes but I have to break them down so he can just lay on it like a rug. Silly boy.
Burt has made a mistake. We all know there is no such thing as and “empty box” —because “they are all filled with adventure!” (As related by the Cat of Adventure.)
Yep. We no longer buy stuff for the cats, but they get first dibs on all the boxes. Even the doughnut boxes (Odinsdottir, our big floofy Norwegian Forest Cat is so cute when she tries to disappear in one)
And Update has managed to combine two of her very favorite toys (this week). One favorite is a springy wire ball with a furry mouse that rattles. She’ll bat it around and even carry it around in her mouth. Her other favorite is a pop-up tent with three holes for doors and a bell puffball hanging from the roof. Somehow, and don’t ask me how she managed without thumbs, she hooked the wire ball on the puffball and had more fun attacking both.

The box proved too much for the cat
(Too much for the cat)
(He had to take it)
So, he’s leaving a gift he’ll never know, oh
He said he’s going to try find
(Going to try find)
Total peace of mind
That he had left behind
Not so long ago
He’s leaving (leaving)
Behind that scratcher from Georgia (leaving behind a cat scratcher)
Hmm, yeah
Said he’s going back (going back to find)
To a simpler place and time (and when he jumps and hides)
Oh yes, he is (guess who’s gonna nap right by his side)
And Puck’ll be with him (I know he will)
In that empty box from Georgia
(Living in an empty box from Georgia)
He’d rather live in his world (live in his world)
Than live without that box so fine (world, world)
(It’s his, his and Puck’s alone)

Enter Tabith-Isis
Tabith-Isis: Did my order of red dots and papyrus scrolls come in?
Puckmosis: Right here. You can chase your red dots and write your features with no problem.
Beatrixia: Has anyone seen Lupinium?
Elvis-Anum: I haven’t seen him since breakfast. He was helping Thomios in the kitchen.
Beatrixia: Maybe he’s out in the courtyard.
Tabith-Isis: Wait, I think I hear a noise in the box room.
Elvis-Anum: Yep, here he is.
