“Rebecca” by Daphne du Maurier, later made into a movie by Alfred Hitchcock and again recently for Netflix, I think.I first read the book in middle school, carrying it around with me as I often did. Adults would ask “Oh, is that ‘Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm’?” and I would just answer a drawn-out “No”.
Dearest Pucky-Bear, you need remind Loopy Lupin — aka as Fluffapurrus Rex, aka Tiny Horse, aka The Nekkid White Streak of Shamelessness — that you also have ammo for the nickname game!
Hee hee, my Fozzie boy is just like that. My husband can’t even lean over to give me a peck on the cheek without him getting in his face, as though saying “that’s close enough!” Lol!
Hey, this is all the Woman’s fault. If she hadn’t decided to keep a harem of male cats to fawn over her, there would be much more peace, tranquility, and harmony at BCN.
Last night I dreamt of Manderly. It was that weird dream where I find extra kitchens that I didn’t know were there and the floor is missing in places and…
Yep, that’s how it is – the position of Senior Cat comes with a lot of prerogatives and any Junior Cat had better not try to encroach upon ANY of them.
When we were acquired by a certain tiny white kitten (incidentally named Boomer because his purr was far larger than his person), our Senior Cat (Gardenia) did not take it well. Said Junior Cat had to be placed in protective custody in the master bedroom until we were sure he was large enough that she wouldn’t mistake him for an undersized rat and do away with him. Throughout Gardenia’s very long life, Boomer was NEVER allowed lap time outside the bedroom and adjacent bath. If he tried for a cuddle in the recliner, Her Majesty would swiftly appear (generally just long enough to send the upstart on his way), then promptly saunter off back to whatever she happened to be doing prior to the uprising. It never mattered that he grew to outweigh her by at least ten pounds, or that she eventually began to slow down with age – She and She ALONE ruled the realm of the living room and all contained within it. Eventually, she passed over to the Rainbow Bridge … at an estimable age of about twenty-two, and finally Boomer, who was about twelve at that time, could seek lap cuddles to his heart’s content, a duty that he was very assiduous and attentive to for his remaining years.
Oddly enough, Gardenia strictly ignored the dogs – apparently, any and all dogs were beneath her notice. Boomer, on the other hand, enjoyed the company of dogs and played with them when they were indoors. Her Majesty simply observed from her favored throne on the back of the couch.
My cat Colette doesn’t particularly care if Raz gets on my lap in the evening. The “us” time Colette protects is our walks up and down the cul-de-sac. Occasionally, Raz will try to tag along but Colette will chase her all the way back to the house. Oddly enough, she never minded when Tank joined us. Of course, she thought he was wonderful . :)
Marie has pointed out, on more than one occasion, that Hamilton is my cat, just like Belle is her cat. I often wonder what bonds these elusive creatures to one particular person? No matter, Hamilton will not let any other cat sit on my lap for any length of time before he comes over and recovers what is his.
Note that Hamilton is sitting next to me on the chair as I write this.
Say, has anyone read “The Sequel to Rebecca the Second Mrs. de Winter Deserves”? https://the-toast.net/2015/07/13/the-sequel-to-rebecca-the-second-mrs-de-winter-deserves/
I was in a play once where the director told me to think of Rebecca and give off a bit of a Mrs. Danvers vibe in one scene: I’m supposed to be playing well-intentioned head games with the girl I’ve been trying to help, getting her to stand up for herself.

Meanwhile, Back on the Nile
Lupinium: That was a busy day of running and getting into mischief. Now to find an impossibly tiny box to nap in. Ah, this one’s perfect.
Elvis-Anum: Sorry, Lupinium. You’ll have to find another box.
Lupinium: But you’re not even napping. And you won’t be for a few hours yet.
Elvis-Anum: That may be, but I need to keep that box ready for a nap.
Lupinium: You can use it after I’m done napping.
Elvis-Anum: No. I challenge you to a match of waiiotta.
Lupinium: Bring it on.
Circling each other
Lupinium: Why, I oughtta!
Elvis: Why, I oughtta!
Sometime Later
Elvis-Anum: Now I’m tired. To the box!
Lupinium: What’s that I see hanging out of it? Could it be a paw with an unusual number of toes?
Beatrixia: ZZZzzzzzz……

Well, no one told him to guard her, so dignified
Well, no one told me about him, how rest time is denied
But it’s too late to say he’s sorry
How would I know, why should I care?
Please don’t bother missin’ Manderley,
Pucky-Bear!
Well, let me tell you ’bout the way he looked
The way he’d act and the way he didn’t share
The couch is soft and cool
My voice is clear and polite
But I’m not there

Inspired by Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis
Narrator: One day, after troubled dreams, Gregor Samsa awoke to find himself transformed into a horrible bug.
Gregor: Wait a minute, what’s this about becoming a bug?
Narrator: Hey, I’m just the narrator. I only read what’s written
Gregor: Who’s the dummy writing this story?
Narrator: I wouldn’t call Kafka a dummy.
Gregor: No matter. I don’t want to become a bug.
Narrator: Who ever does?
Gregor: If I have to become something, why can’t it be noble and dignified?
Poof!
Narrator: Fine. One day Gregor Samsa awoke to find himself turned into a noble and dignified Siamese Cat.
Gregor: Now that’s more like it.
Narrator: And he lived grumpily ever after.
