Luann by Greg Evans and Karen Evans for January 28, 2015
Transcript:
Teacher: "This water balloon is creativity. Tell me how you feel right now" Luann: "Uh, nervous?" Teacher: "Yes! You know what may happen and you fear it. But what if this was filled with $100 bills?" Luann: "Then I'd want-" Teacher: "Awash in creativity!!"

The point could have even been made (and valid) by just saying creativity can be like a âballoon full of waterâ, without demonstrating it. Of course, though, the class would probably have to be awake for thatâŠ

He is a wimp⊠to pick on a young woman and humiliate her like that. If he pulled that stunt on Mr. Jock he may have ended up swinging by his pretentious ascot from a tree outside his classroom.

The Bass Weasel about 10 years ago
If a real teacher did something like this is theyâ be fired, and probably sued. Community colleges generally just hire adjuncts on contract without benefits. Thereâs no tenure. All I can figure is that this is some sort of dig at community colleges â like they hire people out of the psych ward to teach. The stereotype out of the 1950s is really strange as well. How old can this guy be? Can you even buy an ascot or a smoking jacket now days? Youâd have to go to a costume rental place.
Lakegal about 10 years ago
Alas, I had a couple of profs like this at UCLA. One Sociology prof had us knock on unlocked doors while inside rooms to see if someone outside might open them. What the heck that was supposed to prove or demonstrate?

Too weird for CC, this guy. At least if Luann majors in creative arts, it will provide Frank the opportunity to be an unsupportive jerk again! âYouâre going to live with us forever, arenât you?â I would like to see Luann rebel against this attitude. It would be loads more interesting.
seismic-2 Premium Member about 10 years ago
This is really poor. Greg Evans needs to wrap this up by the end of the week and move onto something else. Maybe going back to Luann and Tiffany working at their job with the little kids is more nearly in his comfort zone than this experiment at depicting an annoying professor in junior college. He could even return to the Peru story and tell us what really happened in the parts that Gunther didnât explain yet. This week, though, has been something that needs to be dropped and abandoned. (Evans is good at doing that with ideas that didnât pan out, like the food truck.)
Caldonia about 10 years ago
Also: the shadows are slowly backing out of the room, perhaps to drop the class, and Luann remains bereft of college friends! That is not a good sign.
ekw555 about 10 years ago
in all fairness to the Colonel, that was a POW camp, not a concentration camp.
Caldonia about 10 years ago
TJ attends the class much longer than necessary, not because he needs to be a student but rather for revenge. The idea? Scheme ludicrous, convoluted traps. Then the proff will quit, for no apparent reason. Who wouldnât just adore THAT? Itâs a story that makes no sense, so itâs just flawless!

SpicyNacho Premium Member about 10 years ago
Lawsuit? Everyone calling for a lawsuit is what is wrong with this country and why we have so many ambulance chasing lawyers out there (and in part why prices of everything keep going up).-She should report it and move on. Sometimes odd things happen, and I donât see where she deserves any kind of huge settlement over a little water that messed up her hair and makeup. This is the kind of thing sheâll make friends over and talk about for years, and he would deny it was intentional anyway.
Rotary12 Premium Member about 10 years ago
A good smack upside the head would do wonders for that guys pompous attitude.
Outsideplaying about 10 years ago
Deny it was intentional? Come on, he has a pin in his hand and there are witnesses. Yeah, sheâll probably move on, but this is a form of bullying, embarassment to the student, and not teaching anything related to âcreativityâ. Now if he was trying to get a real reaction from an actor to something unexpected, he should have said something along those lines and involved the whole class, not just one student.
mountainclimber about 10 years ago
I think he meant: âwere filled with $100 dollar bills.â College professors should know about the subjunctive tense even if cartoonists donât.

Effective teachers show, rather than tellI might like this guy after all!*This is a lesson no one in the class will forgetâ I was blessed to have several profs who taught with class demos, and I learned valuable life lessons. Far more so than in any note-taking lecture.

There used to be a Music Video show on PBS called âColorsoundsâ that would teach grammar by identifying certain features in the lyrics as they flashed them on screen while the videos played. RB2âŠ. Community Colleges have their placeâŠ. I agree with you on that. They CAN be used to transfer to a 4-year schoolâŠ. but in a larger than I would like percentage of cases, students end up not getting courses to transfer as completely as they envision because they often are a) not paying attention to what they SPECIFICALLY need to take, or b) they get bad advising. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I do not think Greg is portraying community college as a horrible place at all. Zebo may be a bit over-the-top, but he is simply one professor. Greg is playing up the comedic potential of an over-the-top Zebo⊠and there ARE professors like him at most every college and university. They are the exception rather than the rule, but they do exist. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Greg has never portrayed that college (community or university) is a waste of time. Neither is a waste of time. But the biggest thing you need to remember is that for anyone at any school to get any sort of benefit out of it, the effort and work needs to be from within the person. Whether a trade school, community college, or university⊠it is the effort the person puts into attaining an education that is the important thing. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I am not pleased about the dousing that Luann is getting. But, trying to look aheadâŠ. I am going to assume it is a relatively minor amount of water that was released, and that he may provide a towel for Luann, and that there may be a meaningful point he is really trying to make. I will also wait and see how this pans out.

Argy.Bargy2 about 10 years ago
My brother does. Tenure doesnât mean you donât have to take on a share of the less inspiring tasks of a department. It just means you donât have to go find another jobâŠ
Argy.Bargy2 about 10 years ago
Yes, in the real world, this is not only grounds for an assault charge, but also harassment. But this isnât the real world. Itâs an increasingly disappointing fantasy world, thoughâŠ

Argy.Bargy2 about 10 years ago
Apparently, the direction this comic is headed now is to celebrate bullying. Gunther becomes a bully who wants to control his mother and keep her from having any life other than taking care of him, while barking at her that heâll only enunciate a command once (or else?) And now we get a bullying so-called professor who pretends that dumping water on Luann has anything to do with creativity, so she gets to spend the day in wet clothes or return home and have to explain what happened to parents who probably wonât believe her.-Iâm not a fan of bullies. Guess Iâll go read a comic that doesnât celebrate them.

TORAD_07 about 10 years ago
Not one professor. We started off the week with a guy doing a lecture on the digital age who was complaining about people who took notes for their classes digitally. Zebo is bad professor #2 (unless you count the guy for the one class we saw Luann take last fall, in which case Zebo would be #3).
Actually, weâve seen the 1st prof. before when classes began in Sept. He seems OK. I donât think he was âcomplaining.â I think he was just genuinely shocked to discover that someone still takes hand written notes.
What Iâm curious about, though, is what department offers that class??? Is it âGeneral Studiesâ or the âmathâ dept, or business, or what? âIntroduction to the digital age?â I could see that as an offering for senior citizens that didnât grow up in it⊠but any college kid worth their salt would be able to put that prof. to shameâŠ

True, but later, Klink was transferred to Buchenwald by General Burkhalter after Klink parked his staff car in front of The Berghof and it blew up. Burkhalter felt that they could keep a closer watch on him there rather than him screwing up their operations on the Eastern Front.
I have the DVDs for HH. What was interesting about the show was that all of the regular German officers were, in fact, Jewish in real life. Werner Klemperer (Klink), John Banner (Schultz), Howard Caine (Maj. Hochstadter) and, of course, Leon Askin (Burkhalter). All of them accepted the roles with the intent on playing them as buffoons and idiots.
Of all the regular cast members, I believe only Robert Clary (LeBeau), an actual Holocaust survivor, is still alive.

Great Point, Dave! âHas slapstick and acceptable notions of slapstick been redefined by society?â It has the ring of a âTEDâ talk about it, doesnât it? I will mull it over more as I drive home later this afternoon in my comfortably ratty old pick-up and indulge in a pipe or two.
Pipe Tobacco Premium Member about 10 years ago
Man! What has gotten into the group the past week or two? People seem a whole helluva lot more prone to being overly harsh with each other here in the comments. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++I mean, there is really no value in being verbally nasty towards a fellow commenterâŠ. even if you find their ideas tiresome, short-sighted, or even obnoxious. I sincerely believe that MOST folks commenting here try to put forth genuine ideas generated in them through their reading of âLuannâ. Some of these ideas may be pretty damn far-fetched at times, I will agree. ButâŠ. I still find them interesting, and even when I disagree with a commenter, I gain insight by having heard their alternative perspective. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++So, I do appreciate everyoneâs ideasâŠ. just try to be a bit more kind to each other.

Luftwaffe, generic German for air force, as in the Schweizer Luftwaffe (Swiss Air Force); Schutzestaffel (sic), literally means âdefense echelonâ â it was Hitlerâs bodyguard.

Iâd have to say, this might actually be a good lesson in creativity. I think most people are more creative than theyâd give themselves credit for, but theyâre afraid to fail, afraid to look foolish.OK, well here the prof has demonstrated by analogy that, well yah, she has failed, she now looks foolish ⊠but really, sheâs no worse off than before! So maybe there was nothing to be afraid of in the first place. So forget your fears, and try something new, outlandish, potentially embarrassing. Maybe youâll get all wet â - but then again, maybe youâll come up with something really great!Tomorrow, those little embarrassments will be forgotten, but the great stuff will be remembered.

Not really, Howtheduck⊠I would be fairly adequate at such a class⊠I have a decent knowledge of most common software, use a wide array of electronic devices, use electronic databases, sporadically use social media, and am reasonably adept at many aspects of electronics. I am not an expert by any means, but have and do regularly utilize electronica in my teaching, research, and daily life⊠that said⊠there are times where non-electronic methods can be sufficient or even superior. I think note taking in class via traditional pencil and paper offers a fair number of advantages in a lecture of that sort.

âDidnât Ponchos Pilot asked the Jewish rabble to decide to kill or spare? Joshuah had no choice in the matter despite what he said.â.Pontius..He decided to put it to a vote.He did not have to do that.He could have executed those bringing charges, claiming THEY were not loyal to Caesar since they rejected his judicial system. He COULD have delayed judgment until people had time to cool off and witnesses be gathered..It all depends on what you believe. All witnesses were biased. They claimed he was able to heal sick, feed multitudes, give sight to blind, give life to dead, change wash water into fine wine, walk on water, know thoughts, talk to God and be answered and that he raised himself from the dead. They were willing to face death rather than recant their claims..If you donât trust any of them, you may as well believe it was all made up.Thatâs your right.
