As was suggested yesterday, here it is early in the line-up.
This is the recurring list of answers for recurring questions. If you think you have seen it or them before, then you have.Yes, we all know this is just a comic strip. People like to think about it just as they do with other forms of fiction, though, and many find that a relaxing diversion.K2 is Kafe Kablooie which is the cafe in The Fuse that is run by TJ, an investor in the Fuse. The Fuse an entertainment complex in an old factory of unexplained background which was bought by Luann’s parents.Les is Al Grey’s nephew, son of his sister who is a single parent. He is employed as a favor to Mr. Grey. Yes, Les was the high school bully who shook down fellow students.Shannon is 6 years old. She was not always 6 in the strip, but is currently 6.Luann is a teenager as are her friends. Her cohort just finished their first year of college. Since it happened in Luanntime which does not map consistently with real world time it took two years of our time.In Luanntime compared to real world time a five minute conversation might extend over a week or more of strips, but one year can take multiple 3D (real time) years, and even have multiple summers. As one poster once mentioned, if you can not cope with that then think of them like recollections, so in a second (third, whatever) same summer you are reading recollections that fill you in more on that same summer.Sunday strips are usually, but not always, stand-alones.Quill used to work at the Fuse. Quill is from Australia. He is Luann’s ex-boyfriend who worked a trade between The Fuse and the Mooney University Theatre Program in which he is a student on a student visa. The University was remodeling its theater space so the trade was old theater equipment which he would install and manage in exchange for free use of the Fuse theater by the university department. He was with a student learning program in NYC in the past and left the Fuse shortly after he and Luann broke up to go on tour during Spring Break. It is unclear if that was with a student theatre program also, and unclear if real world visa rules apply in 2D. He is still a student at the university.Luann chose to attend the community college for her first two years to save money while getting a better handle on what she wants to study and later do in life, meanwhile she is taking some required general core/introductory classes, though usually we have seen only one series of art classes and two fellow students in those classes.Toni, who is Shannon’s aunt, and the older sister of Jonah, is engaged to Brad, Luann’s brother. They had first planned on a Sept 11th wedding to honor the 9/11 firefighters, but the week that their boss could work in for them both to have off begins on Dec. 11.The Fuse Follies signs never mentioned a competition of prizes, so until we learn otherwise it might just be an open stage night.Shannon’s mother left soon after she was born. We do not know who she was.Toni did her best as a young adult to try to help her brother after their parents died, but he acted out quite a bit, hence the appearance of Shannon in their lives. He is often heading off to auditions at which times Shannon usually stays with Toni.Delta spent her freshman year at Howard University in Washington, DCAaron Hill long ago moved to Hawaii, though he might be anywhere as a college student. His move to Hawaii led to an oft-repeated phrase where missing or retired characters are “in the volcano”. Dirk, too, is among those who have been gone for quite some time. You create paragraphs by placing a letter (I usually use L.) between the “less than” and “greater than” symbols. Here is the former to guide you: <If you decide to spend the less than a buck a month to go Pro, which i did to eliminate advertisements, you will have to click on a person’s name to get the reply button at the bottom if you have the same interface i have.If you have a question you will often find the answer in the comments section. Sometimes one of the very extra-considerate members will even have included the image of a relevant strip or its URL.

I understand it’s an all ages show, but that’s a very kinky outfit Tiffany has on. Nevertheless maybe Tiffany can think up a new look and a new act for Shannon in ten minutes. I really like the recent changes in Tiffany – the one dimensional thing gets old after a while. While we’re at it, maybe Shannon’s Dad will arrive late and crash into Les making his getaway.
dadoctah over 8 years ago
You want to really shake up people’s expectations, here’s how this could play out: Jonah fails to show, Shannon is goaded into going out on stage anyway, and suddenly a guitar begins to play “It’s A Small World”! To everyone’s surprise, it’s Les, playing a hastily-borrowed guitar! Shannon wows the crowd and Les, who stepped in when he saw a little girl in trouble, is suddenly a hero.

Tiffany is trying to rescue Shannon, and she is revealing to us a lot about herself and how she came to be the girl she is. I like the Tiffster, and I hope her life gets better. Maybe, just maybe, Gunther and she can have some moments of joy together….
Make Mine Marvel over 8 years ago
No, no, not the neck! (Any New Riders of the Purple Sage fans out there?)
I’d like to see Fishbait get it in the face, to where he can’t be on camera or on stage for a while. But as emotionally satisfying as many of as might find it, having Bwad punch Fishbait wouldn’t be a healthy development for Shannon. She needs to feel supported, not conflicted. Good for Tiffany, I think…
Having Les be the one to “save the day” with mad guitar-playing skills wouldn’t be very satisfying to me, at least, because it wouldn’t change the fact that he’s a thief (or appears to be). I don’t much care for the idea of Les as a crooked cheat who happens to have done one nice thing for a little girl, so it’s all OK now.
Thanks, Sukie, for your work in putting the “guide” together. I suspect that the Follies won’t be an issue much longer, so you’ll probably want to delete that item in another week or two — but there will be other issues to add. Good work!
Have I got this paragraph thing down right?
Make Mine Marvel over 8 years ago
I think I do!

Nor would I consider it “OK” if Les simply gave back the money. Remember, he seems to have been “picking up” tips prior to the Follies. I’d never be sure he’d given back all the money, or that he wasn’t just being more careful. He’s a punk and a crook. I want to know more about why Mr. Grey brought him in — and what he (Uncle Al) plans to do about it now.

Tiffany has matured more than any of the others since HS. She has become one of my favorite characters.
drewpamon over 8 years ago
It’s really sad. I suspect that Shannon was so interested in doing this show because, as she mentioned in a pervious strip, her dad always makes his own shows. So she thought that this would be the one time he wouldn’t disappoint since she had chosen the activity that he apparently valued over herself and his own selfishness. She didn’t apparently realize that he doesn’t consider this performance as “counting”.

Jonah comes late after all, sees his little girl in spangles and loves it or hates it. Either way, he meets Tiff. (Though he said earlier he had arranged Toni to take her home.)

Maybe, just maybe, Jonah really is in the process right now of the final round of auditions for selecting the cast in this production of Cats. Sure, he should call Toni (if he is not actually in the theater, where he couldn’t use his phone), but isn’t the more responsible thing for him to do as a parent is to try to win the part (which pays money, so he can support himself and his daughter) rather than blowing off the audition to play guitar for Shannon’s dance in an amateur show?Again, just a possibility at this point, but we should keep it in mind.

I’ve recently seen a trailer for an upcoming movie, probably meant for kids, but I’m thinking I’ll go. It’s about a Dad who is always promising to ‘be there’ for his daughter (birthdays, whatever), but never is. She had been asking for a cat, and for her last birthday ended up with a pool table (I think), which sounds more like the Dad’s interest.
Anyway, SPOILER, the Dad is somehow turned into a cat…

To me also, it wouldn’t seem to favor a child well, no. But as each parent is responsible for their own, I’m sure some would express there’s a time and place for a child to do so. -To me, it’s the amount that is applied on a young girl, the balance, and the age limit (what age to start with), i would feel, is what would seem to make the difference….

For those who question the timing, remember the strip where Luann turns 18 in Sept of 2014:http://www.gocomics.com/luann/2014/09/21Now, notice this strip from March of 2016, just about 4 months ago, and notice that Luann is STILL 18 because 12 plus 6 equals 18.http://www.gocomics.com/luann/2016/03/06And this post refers to a “whole year of art”Oh, shoot! I lost that URL. It was mid-month, i think June just a few weeks ago and i think it was a Monday, maybe Tuesday. I was just looking at it. You can use the calendar function to get it, though. If i coukd do it btwn needs here, then any of you can do it, too. It was shortly before the Follies arc and after the movie arc.If someone would like to attach explanatory strips like these to my Luann Q and A list, i have no problem with them posting that. I do not know how to do it, and since Orville might be touch and go for a while i do not have time to learn. THANKS!

Steve just got Orville to take over 45 ml of a water, meat babyfood, and pasteurized egg yolk “soup”, so i found the “whole year” strip which compliments the two bookend posts where Luann is 18 but which are two years apart in our time.http://www.gocomics.com/luann/2016/06/13It just hit me that shortly before the first bookend i saw a strip where she gets advice from her grandparents for starting college. What is “subcu with Ringers?” How many ferrets do you have, and are they all affected by the loss of one? I’ve only “met” a couple of ferrets but they seemed to like my shoulders to hang out on. I also thought that they had a pretty long life expectancy. It’s sad to lose any pet, I still have the collars from my 5 dogs that died. Fortunately, our latest rescue is laying by my foot as I type this.

As people were just proving through numerous references above, in the strip Luann is still 18, so Bernice is too. Also, Luann makes reference to a whole year of art with Zebu, even though there have really been two, The last year was thus freshman year #2, just as in high school when Luann and Bern were semi-permanent juniors. And even if the time line were in fact different, then Bernice would have been the nation’s only sophomore R.A.
seismic-2 Premium Member over 8 years ago
If Bernice had now completed her second year of college, then Luan would have done so, too, and she would already have received her A.A. degree from the community college. Instead, she’s going back this fall, so she has completed only a single year.
luann1212 over 8 years ago
I am not one who thinks Shannon is likely to grow up like Tiffany simply because of parental neglect by her dad. I think the idea of her character and the surrounding characters she will receive plenty of love and support. Tiffany is coping with her alienation by her behavior in terms of self-help through make-up, and other self-affirming behavior, but at the same time she is becoming a kinder less sarcastic person. This arc is, among other things, many other things, an illustration of Tiffany’s background and current development, which shows Shannon’s current and future prospects in clear relief. Kind of psychobabble I know, but that is my take, and I am sticking to it!!

Schrodinger's Dog over 8 years ago
looking at the relatively short time till Brad & Toni’s wedding date, you might be right that Greg needs to move things along inre Jonah’s “disposition” and the Shannon question.
gromit82 over 8 years ago
I’m well aware that whatever we decide about the characters’ class standing, we’ll have some inconsistencies to deal with. But when Bernice announced that she had become an R.A., here were some of the comments (see http://www.gocomics.com/luann/2015/08/31):SF1972: “I guess Greg is still aging them in real time. She’s probably a sophomore. My dorm had sophomore RAs. Not many, but one or two.”cdward: “They are now Sophomores. My son was an RA as a Sophomore.”seismic-2: “If Bernice is now starting her second year at Moony Uni, presumably Luann will be starting her second year at Pitt Community College.”LDover: “They do seem to have moved ahead a year, but that does not mean we can’t have 5 years of the next year or so.”and from http://www.gocomics.com/luann/2015/09/01:reedkomicks: “She is about to be 19 and is a Sophomore.”So I would recommend leaving out of the FAQ any definitive statement about what Luann and her friends’ class year is. There have been some implications that can support more than one interpretation here.
seismic-2 Premium Member over 8 years ago
> why not also hold that “college time” need not be co-incidental with “age time” ?>So Bernice is an 18-year-old R.A., rather than a freshman R.A. To-MAY-to, to-MAH-to.
SukieCrandall Premium Member over 8 years ago
The first one, BTW, is her first day of college classes, mclose to her 18th birthday, which was in Sept 2014 our times, and she was STILL 18 in March of 2016 per a direct link given, sooooo with her 18th birthday and her first college class having been in Sept of 2014, and her refering to being 18 in March of 2016 and then to having finished a year of art classes in June of 2016, it is safe to assume that her 18th year extends over two of our years.Plus, as Seismic correctly pointed out, Luann woukd most likely be finishing up community college, even perhaps w an associates degree in two years, not refering to having finished a year of classes which we know began when she first started college.

I don’t know why but since graduating high school, Tiffany has become one of my favorite characters. Yes, she is still shallow and (somewhat) mean to Luann, she has become a caring person. Further, she has revealed details about her past that haven’t been known before.
