I’ve tried sushi… delicious. The term “sushi” actually refers to the rice soaked with vinegar which acts as an antibacterial agent on the raw fish making it palatable.
When Luann and Tara are together, it reminds me of Black Swan.
Lilly (Mila Kunis) was trying to get the rather inhibited Nina (Natalie Portman) to loosen up and find her darker side, to round out her personality and improve her ballet creativity.
Lilly certainly had her own provocative character. She was bisexual, coming on to Nina a time or two, and occasionally used ecstasy.
should anyone tell Lue that some of the makeup is made of bug’s feces? and that peanut butter has lil bits of bug’s body parts? and some parfums have the gland sac from the beaver?
Yesterday both Luann and Tara picked up a tray for themselves. Today we see only two lone burgers with no fries, and one drink. The food was that bad. So at the end of the school day Luann should invite Tara to Kafe Kablooie for a good meal.
Of course this afternoon is going to be another meeting with Fay.
Ah yes, the classic joke of “Luann’s an idiot”, part 5,427.
Seriously, what did she think caviar was? And why would she be so eager to try it without bothering to even find out first?
And besides, the days where if people didn’t know something they had to either ask someone or settle for being ignorant are long gone. We have the entire sum of human knowledge literally in the palm of our hand, and she never once bothered to look up this food she’s been so desperate to try?
Still, it’s a mildly amusing gag, I guess (if it took place in 1985).
Reminds me of a 1970’s “All In The Family” episode. Edith brings a platter to the table and Archie asks what it is. Edith replies that it is baked beef tongue. Archie throws a fit and tells Edith that he’s not going to eat anything that has been in an animal’s mouth. Edith asks him what he would rather have instead.
.
“Something that ain’t been in an animal’s mouth, fix me a couple of eggs…”
Sushi is not necessarily made with raw fish, i.e. sashimi. Sushi refers to food prepared with the sticky rice shaped for nigiri or used in hand rolls or cut rolls. I’ve had sushi prepared with venison, wild boar, marlin, all grilled before prep, as well as cooked and raw fish, and veggies, too. Thinking sushi is raw fish is a common misconception.
So Luann didn’t know that caviar is fish eggs? Oh, well. You learn something every day, like me learning from someone a long time ago that calamari is squid (not that I’ve ever had it, thank God!).
Sushi or no sushi. Itch or no itch list. What is unreal here is that Luann is writing on a piece of paper. A real piece of paper. Both Tara and Luann have not pulled out their laptops?
Notice Tara has yet to express any regret emotionally. There seems to be quite a bit of repressing (or emotional redirecting) go on for her. She could be the first character to need a therapist.
Sushi is NOT “raw fish”. Sushi is a vinegared rice food preparation, stuffed with a variety of food, not just fish. BTW, genuine sushi is out of this world delicious.
BTW, someone mentioned yesterday an “Amazing Race” challenge where they were required to eat a whole Kg of Beluga Caviar. That must have been one expensive challenge! The going rate for Russian Beluga Caviar is about $7000.00/kg these days.A one ounce tin is about $150.00 retail, so maybe $180.00 to purchase at a restaurant as an apetizer (since they usually jazz that up with the condiments, the billini (or toast points), etc. etc.
Been down this road before with friends. Got a friend who’s never tried sushi? Start them off with a California Roll — no raw anything, just crab meat, avocado, and cucumber. We call that “starter sushi”. Work them up to spicy tuna slowly.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t this strip use to alternate between arcs every few days or so? These week long (or longer) arcs are getting old. Months to come to Tara. Ann’s party, Brad, Toni and Shannon. C’mon…mix it up. Oops, almost forgot Tiff, (whom I don’t care much about)
The DeGroot family thinks that “exotic” cuisine is ham sandwiches made with Miracle Whip and whole wheat bread, not Wonder Bread! Ooh, what a wicked thrill!
I’ve had caviar a few times. I don’t know that it was the super fancy expensive varieties (probably wasn’t) but it just tasted super salty to me. I didn’t understand what all the hoopla was about.
Tara brings such a slice of excitement to Luann, just what she needs. It appeals to Luann’s bleeding heart liberal side, Bernice is more a hard-hearted right-winger type, but not really. She is very judgmental though. So no question that a real clash is imminent.
These aren’t young people at all. Sushi is incredibly popular among young people and has been for a generation. Caviar however was considered indulgent in the 1970s and 80s. It’s considered less so now. Yet another example of Evans and Evans failing in their mission.
The joke and punchline are both quite funny today. But, with both of these females being college students and both having lived in California (unless Tara came from somewhere else, but it seems unlikely given she is now at Pitt CC)…. it is rather surprising that neither of them has ever tried sushi before. But, I guess that in general it does seem that Luann has had a rather minimally diverse culinary upbringing.
Sushi and sashimi in all of their various forms are quite tasty, IMO.
OH MY GOD!!!! Seems like 40 comments about how it is ubbelieveable that LuAnn didn’t know caviar was fish eggs GASP!! SO WHAT? Still it beats commenting on her being left handed or writing on paper , .. oh wait…
i think a lot of things are gonna come off of luann’s itch list if she judges what they taste like by where they came. It’s racist not to like caviar because they came from somewhere less civilized than you :P
yes Luann got it wrong about the sushi. I’m seeing Tara has a role to play. Luann may think she wants to try new things but she backs off when she gets too close. looks like she will need a push.
Where would you find sushi in a junior college cafeteria, and WHY would you wanna try it there (Or anywhere)? Is anyone else sick of watching these two have lunch for three days??
sushi is commonplace these days. Luann and Tara should start out with a ‘California’ roll which is all veggie. Probably Fay, just 13 and a much more ‘experienced’ eater, could give Luann some tips.
To Luann1212: from the ‘college cafeteria food’ post from yesterday:
My knowledge of the stuff is a little dated, so let’s just say it was a few scant years ago!! ;) Anyway, it was – at least to my experience – not that bad (no daring, really different foods, but not bad). And we had a la carte options, which was pretty sweet, especially at breakfast. I didn’t look into cost too much at the time – but the convenience factor was definitely there. If I did it all over again, I’d probably have bought my own food and rented a place (apartment or house) after the obligatory year-in-the-dorm, and likely would have saved money over all.
I’m sure it’s a LOT more expensive for room and board now, as colleges are being squeezed like everything else – just look at tuition rates nowadays.
Apologies. Someone called me out last week for my continuous references to the “barracks thief,” noting that there was no barracks, hence, no barracks thief. // Having spent the majority of my life in the military, I have come to refer to all dormitories as “barracks” since, to me, that’s exactly what they are. // Not all barracks are “open bay” (the Beetle Bailey and Gomer Pyle stereotype, but to me, all dormitories are barracks. // My point being, from the military, there is nothing lower than a barracks thief! – The reason that solving that mystery was so important to me. // And now, back to my other life – that’s all the time for comments I have this week!
