Yeah, Bernice, Luann unintentionally make joke.

Luann in the Military, as a sort of 21st Century “Private Benjamin.” Lu does have that sort of “goofy but cute” Goldie Hawn quality about her, IMHO. But I think Lu would do well in the Armed Forces. It’s an interesting idea but of course it AIN’T gonna happen. Problem is, it takes her away from everything Pitts, not to mention her friends.

But I’m glad G&K mentioned military service. I’m still hoping they introduce a female CH-47 pilot in the Military Reserves who attends also attends Moony, as possible gal pal for My Favorite Nerd. Hey I can dream.

And note that suddenly the subject of Tara has suddenly been “dropped……..,”

I don’t know about everyone else here, but I’m beginning not to like Bernice.

Now, with a friend like that. Luann doesn’t need any enemies!! Luann should stand up and walk out the door!!

I can relate to this. As a young adult, I don’t know what I want to study either. I’ve always admired the people that knew what they wanted to be.

I’m not sure how to read Bernice’s response.

Somebody yesterday said Bernice was jealous of how close Luann was to Tara. After today, I hope that person realizes that Bernice isn’t particularly interested in being a friend to Luann, so why would she care if Luann is friends with Tara?

What am I missing? Why is Bernice laughing?

I relate to Luann’s situation. I graduated from college – with no idea what I was going to do afterward. My grades started to tank in the final year and I barely made it through, Luann seems more social as opposed to studious. She would be very well liked as a tour guide.

Bernice has no business being a psychologist. She needs to SEE a psychologist.

I can see changing one’s mind later but didn’t Luann go to her Community College partially because it had a good theatre dept. (and it was a more realistic option than Julliard)? Has she taken any theatre courses at all?

Relax, ladies, another holiday season has arrived and your prospects under the mistletoe look pretty bleak.

It appears here that Bernice’s sarcasm borders on cruelty. She is making fun, it would appear on Luann’s uncertainty, and struggle to do well in school, and to decide what to do in life. Making a rather stupid sarcastic comment about General Education, not only is kind of ignorant, extremely smug, not at all emphatic, but is not very helpful to Luann. At least Tara does not make fun, in a very personal, mocking way (not fun, teasing mocking either) as opposed to Luann’s supposed best friend. Maybe there is a nice tie-in to something positive here, but for now I can’t see it. Luann needs to tell Bernice quite clearly how brain dead she is, how insulting she was and then leave her there to perhaps see the error of her ways. I have never been more disappointed in a character who should know better. At least we know Ann Eiffel is evil, what is Bernice’s excuse?

Bernice is a jerk, and her attitude is one of the reasons I did not seek desperately needed psychotherapy for several decades.

Avoid the military unless you want to graduate from college debt free, retire by age 45 and flow into a second career that values your prior experience.

Reading some of the comments here, I think Bernice could be in Major Trouble.

I never did find out what I wanted to “be.” So I’ve always done whatever seemed to be beckoning at the time. I wonder why we presume that everyone has to “be” some specific thing, and why we automatically define ourselves by whatever our job is.

I didn’t know what I wanted to be till I was 35. I became a programmer. Really like it.

As though being beautiful were not enough, Bernice is amusing when she wants to be.

I’ve heard that the liberal arts degree has a great deal of merit in today’s society. Apparently, having the 4 year pig skin is its own reward. It demonstrates the ability to focus one’s efforts on goals, working within a program, and having a diverse background of knowledge as a base from which a company can add to for their own needs.

I have a cousin with a degree in English and she has parlayed that into successful work in the film industry.

As a psychologist, Bern is riding for a big failure.

Her Second her at Muni and Luann still doesn’t have a clue what she wants? I thought she opted for “Early Childhood Ed,” the way she seems to enjoy the kids at her library job.

Bernice may have a future in psychology, but not comedy. Kind of a concern that she’s so sterile and not empathic, though. Doesn’t do much to open up clients.

Compare how helpful and supportive Luann was to Jack when he was having trouble deciding what he wanted to study as a major. Luann needs a friend as good as she is.

Work isn’t what you ARE. Work is what you DO. You ARE all sorts of things over, above, beyond, beside, maybe even behind and underneath, what you DO.

People, she making a joke about the military and education, thus the phrase “General Ed” not making fun of Luann.

That’s the first REAL grown up observation I’ve ever heard from Luann. Excellent. BTW, the way Bernice’s character is evolving I can see her leading a group of trans-teens on exploring their feelings towards the misogyny of eating a steak.

Get in the ROTC program at Mooney if they have one. Great experience!!

A little harsh, Bernice. Some people at that age feel pretty much the same way about psychology.

She’ll get a private education before it becomes general.

Nuclear astrophysics is an interdisciplinary branch of physics involving research in various subfields of nuclear physics and astrophysics. Luann would need at least one Ph.D. and many years of cross-specialization. Why am I doubtful?

Berniece may want to be a psychiatrist but she is the least empathetic character in Luann’s life and she has almost no understandingly human behavior! She will be a terrible psychiatrist and may put a lot of people on the wrong path if she doesn’t improve. She should have learned a few things by now about how to be a good one. She is far too judgemental and too much of a know it all.

Come on guys! Let Bernice have her space here. She’s been Luann’s BFF since the first. She’s the Anti-Luann in many ways. Or Luann is the Anti-Bernice. Luann “pesters” Bernice as much as the other way around. Each have offered the other sage advice. Each has tried to get the other see themselves from a different perspective. The list of opposite adjectives for these two is endless; starting with naïve-grounded…

At the heart of it, each unconsciously sees and appreciates the other.

Joining the military (USMC) for 3 years was the best thing I ever did! Highly recommended.

The military will find a use for you. Maybe one with civilian application, maybe not.

School would be easier if you paid attention in class.

Just whatever you do, make sure the degree matches your goals. I can’t tell you how many English majors I know who graduated and said, “now what?”. Unless they wanted to teach, it’s pretty useless. I’d say out of the 3 I knew, only one was thinking of teaching, the other two jumped into business and was able to be promoted due to having a degree but wished they would’ve majored in business instead of english. I also knew someone who majored in philosophy who told me their degree was useless as they didn’t want to teach. I learned from all my friends’ mistakes and got my degree in business management and it’s a perfect fit for me.

What, an inkling of a new p[lot line? Where “LUANN” is actually about Luann and not these other tired characters and plot lines that go no where ?

The Military is actually a good idea. You will learn life skills that will help you focus on what you really want with your life. You can then go to college on the GI bill and save yourself some $$.

I am surprised at how many folks are berating Bernice here today. I thought today’s effort was wonderfully funny! Bernice actually told a joke too!!!!!! That is not something normally in her wheelhouse.

Today’s effort was both touching and funny! I like that Luann is exploring and explaining more about her own feelings about her future. I like that Bernice is being a bit silly and making a punny joke to try to lighten the mood.

I suspect that (because I believe Bernice is a very true friend for Luann) that if Luann continues to be contemplative, Bernice will really offer good advice.

Wow. Just one little mention of the military and this place turns into a big recruitment poster. Well, some things don’t have to be nice to be good. But, don’t think of Luann and the military in the same sentence.

I can’t beleive I’m joining this huge discussion, but…the characters in Luann are just like the rest of us in many ways. That means getting mean and petty like bernice (and don’t we hope she’ll outgrow it? They were best buds once), or hopeless like Gunther. I hope they continue to grow and change. And while you’re having them grow, Greg, please bring Delta back!!! She was in many ways the best of them all!

Bernice has become much more snarky since she started college and her path to becoming a counselor. A “best friend” is there to tell you when you’re being unrealistic but won’t be snarky about it. Maybe it’s because she is going to Moonie U and thinks Luann was not smart enough to get in. Luann is smart in that she chose to go to a technical school to get her basic courses out of the way before going to university. When I went to college at 50 (yes, 50 years old! I am now 62), that is what I did and I managed to earn TWO Associates Degrees while there.

Luann should talk about her doubts with other friends. Maybe with Jack or Tara. They surely would be more helpful. But happy Bernice is priceless.

It’s tough to have this sort of discussion with someone who has known you since Kindergarten.

She has known Luann a long time and to see her in the military just seems laughable to her. But then she is a snarker.

Bernice is qualified for a Lucy Psychiatric Help Booth – she has the sarcasm down pat.

I thought Luann was starting to get a handle on some direction, e.g. art and art education for kids; now she’s rudderless again. Bern should not be mocking ‘gen ed’ (I get her joke and its stupid). A strong liberal arts education does more to prepare a student for lots of options than anything. I would be more concerned about someone like Bernice who is so dead set on what she thinks she will do than someone like Luann who just needs a good academic advisor. It would be great if we see Bernice have an experience that makes her change her major.
