Doug is at the Fuse with Luann and wonders why there is only one other customer and why that customer keeps staring at him. He turns to Luann and says, “Can we leave? This guy is creeping me out. He keeps staring at us. My friend Bets told me this was a terrible place for first date.”
Luann IS Nutty enough to have this “Meet Up” with Doug at the Fuse. I guess she doesn’t know Tiffany is working there now as a (Cough, Cough) “waitress.” She’ll SOON find out. Especially if Doug is Good Looking. Ms. Farrell will zero right in on him.
And If Tiffany doesn’t screw things up with her non stop flirting, then those CONFUSING instructions to Jack, Surely WILL.
Of course, one has to ask: “WHY even involve Jack at all on this date?” After all, the Fuse a Public Place. if Doug gets fresh, you got TJ, Ox, and Pru not to mention the Town of Pitts’ General Public there to witness and intervene. And surely Doug wouldn’t be dumb enough to make an unwelcomed move on Luann THERE as opposed to waiting until later when he and Lu are alone and in a private place.
And WHY can’t Luann take care of herself, anyway? Did she forget how to say “I’m not interested Doug, sorry.” And excuse herself? Long time fans will remember that Luann is the Young Woman that once got into a limo with Elwood Druit and his Bodyguard, and headed off to parts unknown, when she was in high school. And there wasn’t a chaperone or “bodyguard” one, with her. And THAT, was with her parent’s “blessing.” Now all of a sudden, she NEEDS a “backup??”
But I hope G&K surprises us here, and ALL goes well. But if a Fight breaks out at the Fuse, hopefully it will spill into the kitchen and involve Les! ;)
Is there really no other place in this town for people to hang out? Or is Greg simply that stuck in his comfort zone? This isn’t like a TV show where there’s a limited budget to work with so you have to stick with the same few sets.
The Fuse must have discount coupons for DatePic couples.
Let’s see…possibilities…1. Tiffany flirts with Jack and Jack misses Luann’s signal2. Ox asks, innocently, why Luann never explained what she was doing in Gunther’s bedroom that one time
I’m sure y’all’ll have more. Hilarity seems likely to ensue.
I just know there will be miscues with the concluding disaster. Luann might have a nose itch, got a piece of food stuck in her throat, wipe off ketchup on her chin, make an eye roll that looked like goggly eye….or Doug, having been on Date-Pic dates, catches her making cues and calls her on it and looks for Jack. Whichever – this won’t be a smooth sailing. OR just the opposite…Luann catches DOUG with the cues.
You would NEVER make the signals things that could naturally happen…cough? drop your napkin? 100% that she’ll do one of those and Jack will break up a date that is going fine by accident. Soooo predictable! Ugh!
Is Luann 12 years old or something? This is a disappointing arc showing her at a very low level of maturity. But of course the mixed signal thing is supposed to entertain. Poor Jack!
Luann really likes Jack. He has been there for her like when she was at that party she went to with Tara, and he had to pick her up. Despite the broken foot, they have had a lot of fun together. Luann is testing him to see how far he will go for her. In this case, she will instigate a fight between Doug and Jack, where she hopes Jack will “win” his girl. Or, at least he will think so…
Grow up, Luann. You are legally an adult, so you don’t need an escort on a date. If he’s a real creep, just tell him this isn’t working, and leave. If he’s not a creep, but you just don’t like him, simply enjoy your meal, but at the end of the date tell him you want to meet other people through the app instead of seeing him again. This sort of “rescue scheme” is the kind of thing we would expect from Gunther.
This is a masterful set up by Greg! Is this: A set up for Tiffany the Entrepreneurial Waitress? A set up for a little pay back from Gunther? A set up for Jack to foul things up? A set up for Jack to play the rescuer again? A set up for Doug to be a regular (romantic) character?
I’m betting at least two of the five will happen… or something completely different.
This reads like a classic replay of an episode of “Laverne & Shirley”.
Because “The Fuse” is a very public spot, Luann does not need a “spotter” for her, but it is designed to help her feel more comfortable.
I feel a bit sad though, because at this moment both Luann and Jack are stating fairly obviously that they are only meant to be “friends”. Of course, this could change in the future…. but at the moment, they are not on each other’s dating radar.
I wonder if it is THIS DOUG:At the age of fifteen Doug and Dinsdale started attending the Ernest Pythagoras Primary School in Clerkenwell. When the Piranhas left school they were called up but were found by an Army Board to be too unstable even for National Service. Denied the opportunity to use their talents in the service of their country, they began to operate what they called ‘The Operation’… They would select a victim and then threaten to beat him up if he paid the so-called protection money. Four months later they started another operation which the called ‘The Other Operation’. In this racket they selected another victim and threatened not to beat him up if he didn’t pay them. One month later they hit upon ‘The Other Other Operation’. In this the victim was threatened that if he didn’t pay them, they would beat him up. This for the Piranha brothers was the turning point.
Most of the strange tales concern Dinsdale, but what about Doug? One man who met him was Luigi Vercotti.
“I had been running a successful escort agency — high class, no really, high class girls — we didn’t have any of that — that was right out. So I decided to open a high class night club for the gentry at Biggleswade with International cuisine and cooking and top line acts, and not a cheap clip joint for picking up tarts - that was right out, I deny that completely -, and one evening in walks Dinsdale with a couple of big lads, one of whom was carrying a tactical nuclear missile. They said I had bought one of their fruit machines and would I pay for it? They wanted three quarters of a million pounds. I thought about it and decided not to go to the Police as I had noticed that the lad with the thermonuclear device was the chief constable for the area. So a week later they called again and told me the cheque had bounced and said… I had to see… Doug. Well, I was terrified. Everyone was terrified of Doug. I’ve seen grown men pull their own heads off rather than see Doug. Even Dinsdale was frightened of Doug. He used… sarcasm. He knew all the tricks, dramatic irony, metaphor, bathos, puns, parody, litotes and… satire. He was vicious.”
Ever since high school graduation, Greg has been running a casting call for new characters that might work out. He exiled a few former regulars, and sabotaged Tiffany. And now we arrive at another D-Day. D for Doug or D for disaster?
Instead of Tiffany honing in on Luann’s date – she may end up flirting with Jack enough to make Luann completely lose interest in her date and go to JACK’S “rescue”.
oh puleeze… Luann over reacting as usual; this hair-brained plan is going to backfire in some way. my guess is that Luann is going to like this guy and will understand why Gunther felt so irritated with her hovering and hanging around his table when he just wanted to talk to Bets.
So, a lot of folks have predicted some kind of convergence between Luann/Doug/(Jack) and the Tiffany/(Les)/(TJ) arcs. If this comes to fruition, will it be…
1. Simple, where Tiffany spills a cascading tray of drinks upon Doug or Luann…. and one or both of them gets sputtering mad? If Doug, then probably Jack will come to the rescue. If Luann, probably Tiffany will try to win over the affections of either Doug or Jack.
2. More convoluted, where Doug has some here-to-fore unknown connection to Les, TJ, or The Fuse that is unexpected and shocking.
3. Unrealistic and also horrific…. Doug turns out to be (bland) Quill in disguise and he has theatrical makeup on to disguise his looks…. and he “realizes” that Luann was correct “all the time” and that he should give up acting to be her boyfriend…. that is an important enough career for him… and he proposes to her on the spot…. telling her that he will willingly work forever at “Wennie World” so as to be able to devote his whole essence and being to her. Watching this scene transpire causes Jack to realize his true feelings for Luann and next week we move into an arc where we see Quill and Jack trying to out-compete each other in every possible way.
Realize it is near the end of the semester for me and I have been without coffee or pipe today to quell my mind and give me focus. So, I am not fully responsible for the above ideas. :)
She’s going to meet him in the restaurant owned by her parents and staffed by her friends (except Les I assume); I would think if the guy’s a creep she could go to almost any employee and ask for help?
