Luann all decked in khaki, long knee socks, and assumingly hiking boots…Dez in yoga gear and Bernie in townie outfit. Two are not ready for camping and one of them is not Luann (I am not certain if the suitcase Bernie is pulling belongs to her but if it is, she is half ready because it looks to be small and would only pack clothes). Me thinks Luann will be the one who will have a good time because she is prepared even if she apparently over-packed and her two cohorts will be miserable. I always overpack because my philosophy is more is safer than less especially if you’re going to the middle of nowhere or don’t want to spend the money on buying the missing items.

Well we’ve pared it down to the Intrepid Trio. It’s not hard to predict that Luann1212’s dreams will come to pass. You know… [8 letter word] will ensue.

There is an opportunity here for the Bernice character to really shine. The chance to play off on the polar opposite “campers” could bring her acerbic wit to the fore in a bevy of sotto voces and asides.

Ta da! Let the games begin!

Well, Well, Well. Looks like the camping trip WILL take place. Good, Good!

Ahh the great outdoors! Nothing like getting lost in the woods with a Neo-Hippie, a Book Worm, and the gal next door.

And look. Bernice has her trusty electronic device at the ready, ALREADY! Should come in handy with its compass app and GPS capabilities. That is, before the batteries run out.

It’s too bad Bernice hasn’t met Bets yet. Bernie could forward those camping pics to Bets and she upload them to her Instagram account. Bets 219 followers might enjoy seeing these gals going all “Sheena, Queen of the Jungle.” And it would make them forget about that embarrassing Gunther Pic…….,

Luann, you aren’t a “camper” you’re a glamper. Your idea of camping is a chalet in the woods. Your idea of “roughing it” is no wifi or room service. Whereas dez IS a camper, she can sleep under the stars. I’ve never seen bernice try to go camping so i can’t figure her out. Dez could go au natural. But i suspect au natural for Luann and bernice means no make-up.

I watch a show on The Weather Channel where people decide to go to some godforsaken place for the heck of it. They make sure they have no equipment, water, gas for the vehicle or compass. They also ensure there will be sandstorms, blizzards and other types of horrible weather. Actually they don’t check at all because weather is never bad. They recount their stories of survival by great good luck. Darwin Award honorable mentions.

    This should be very enjoyable!

I like that Dez is simple in her camping needs.

I like that Bernice is all about her “study” of sociological experiment.

I like that Luann is all about her creature comforts.

For me, Greg has perfectly encapsulated the essence of the trio by this simple comparison of each of their respective needs/goals for this trip.

I’m disappointed – though not surprised – at all the comments slamming the girls for what they have or haven’t brought – i.e. their “lack of preparedness.” This era of Luann is all about kids growing into adulthood and independence. Learning through living. I survived many an imperfect camping/backpacking trip when I was in college, two in which foxes and/or raccoons nearly decimated our food supply. Learning through living. Unless they’re planning to go to the back country – not likely, given the lack of backpacks – they’ll learn, and live, and we’ll get a few tucks on the process.

Bernice: 1) Most people who smugly call themselves “the realist” really aren’t-it’s just a way they can feel superior. And judging by some of the reactions you’ve gotten as RA, you don’t have realistic expectations of people.

    2) Can you have an unbiased “group dynamics” study when you are part of the group? Or when you’ve known one of the people in “the study” for most of your life? I know you think you can because you’re “a realist”, but you can’t escape your own biases.

What kind of camping trip is this? The type where they rent a cabin and it has electricity and running water and bathrooms? Where they stay on paved trails, take selfies and enjoy the view, and then come back to the cabin for showers, dinner (even if it’s hot dogs and canned beans), a little “crystal powder” and talking and fortune-telling and then roll out the yoga mats on the floor to sleep? Or is this a real “roughing it” type of camping trip?

Ok—You’ve all got to see this. I have heard of and sung the “Blackfly Song” for years and years, but this is the first time I ever saw this cartoon. It is really cute, and reminds me of many camping experiences I’ve had. I have no trouble with hiking, sleeping out in leaky tents, slippery snow on steep ascents, maneuvering around and over huge boulders, jumping across crevasses, crossing freezing cold rivers in my bare feet (well—that was a little rough), but I CAN’T STAND insects.

This song sums it up, and has a neat cartoon that fits perfectly.
