Coming Soon š At the beginning of April, youāll be
introduced to a brand-new GoComics! See more information here. Subscribers, check your
email for more details.
back when I had a physical newspaper, I always looked forward to the comics, this day in history, and āvoice of the peopleā (reporter asking random people a random question and they publish it).
I read the paper and actually have a Sunday Tribune subscription. But I usually buy it at the store, and when I ask the young Gen Z or younger millennials about either where it is in the store, or how much it costs they are totally, and completely clueless. I actually had one ask me what that was, and she thought it was free. So absolutely true.
What a way to cap two weeks of āhow stupid can Luann beā!
Disclaimer: I like Luann, but I am starting to grate under all these arcs that portray her as, at best, less intelligent than almost any other character in the Luann-verse.
Maybe itās time for Fay to return. Luann really seemed to shine when she was around.
Other thoughts: I know Dog is looking for a Brad and Toni arc sans Shannon. I doubt that would happen because āopposition in all things,ā you know, and Shannon is their āopposition.ā
How about if Brad and Toni dropped Shannon off with Luann for a while?
We are under the impression that Luann is pretty good with little kids.
Itās a sad moment when the parents consider the advertisements to be the funny thing in a newspaper. Watch out comics page! Who needs you? We have advertisements.
I have a hard time getting up in the morning, but I think of the newspaper on my porch and thatās an incentive. Itās something to focus on ā getting me ready to deal with the world.
Iām afraid that newspaper delivery days are numbered ā maybe three more years. Already itās hard to find a store that carries a newspaper. Everything is on line. I donāt like to read my newspaper on the computer screen.
G & K have Luann ranting, āHow will I be entertained? How will I have any fun?ā Luann seems about to dial 911. I think Lu is supposed to be around 20 now ā not 14.
If there was a fourth panel in this Sunday strip, Luann would ask her parents that now age-old running gag question all children of the 21st century are asking: āWhatās a newspaper?ā
My favorite newspaper ad was a full page from a furniture store, that ran a banner shouting WEāRE FEELING THE ECONOMICAL PINCH!!! There was more, but that āeconomical pinchā just killed me.
Luann? You ever hear of something called āreading?ā You āreadā things like newspapers, magazines, books, or, even just stories, physically, or, on your phone, tablet. Entertainment is more than messaging, calling your friends, watching videos.
The Christmas TV āgadgetā commercials are gearing up. If no one noticed their aimed at men and sold as the most time and money saving device your wife will ever use!
Salad ShooterĀ®. What woman needs a device that shoots shredded lettuce like a machine gun?
And who can forget Veg-O-MaticĀ®? The progenitor of it all. āIt slices! It dices! You can even make Julienne Fries!ā
And donāt forget the classic āFinal sale! Everything must go!ā As if that wasnāt always the case with the stuff in a store. (Maybe the owner figures that people didnāt realize it and thatās why business was bad, and he or she thought it was best to make it clear!)
Whatās going to happen when all these electronic devices suddenly go out? Is there going to be a great cry heard across the United States? We already know our kids in school canāt do simple adding or subtracting without it.
Itās kind of a weird continuity thing with ātoon aging versus real time, but original Luann would have been familiar with newspapers, if for nothing else, the toons.I doubt even then she would have gotten the āhilarityā of the ads. Thatās more a perspective of age.
Every time I see a crossword puzzle diagram in a comic strip, the black squares are never symmetrical ā until today. (The grid above shows whatās known as ālateral,ā or āside-to-sideā symmetry. Symmetry usually runs diagonally, from upper left to lower right.)
Our local paper has been going downhill for some time. They are part of a chain that owns four papers in our region. Not to long ago they laid off a whole lot of staff and all four papers are identical except for the mastheads with one editor for all four. Yesterday they eliminated the editors position. I think in two years, at the outside, there wonāt be a local paper.
Itās a funny strip today but those dumb ads pay for that paper. Take away the display advertising and the newsroom goes away too! (No, digital subscriptions at $3.99 a month arenāt going to make up the shortfall)
I used to work as a layout planner. I was required to squeeze in full-page ads for the next dayās issue. Never mind something we used to call deadlinesā¦
Next week a couple starts making plans for a baby shower: Gunther and Bets; Gunther and Tiffany; Gunther and Luann; Gunther and Bernice? Maybe Toni and Bradā¦.naw, too far fetched.
I look forward (every morning) to retrieving my copy of the Times (NYT) from the front of our bldg and when it is not there I am sad. The Times doesnāt have a comics section. I come here for that. But having that paper in hand is a special part of my day (even if I donāt have time to read it immediately). It is important to subscribe to your local paper and to give to your public radio station or else these vital things will disappear.
I remember newspapers! They used to be big, fat, full broadsheets, worth the dime they charged. Now they barely exist as thin, anorexic, midget tabloids that cost a couple of bucks. Is it any wonder they are dying at a time when more timely news sources abound?! Sad but trueā¦.
man itās sad that they donāt know this, thereās a video on you tube where it has kids not knowing what a VHS is, now if they are 10 years old thatās one thing but it just made me feel so damn old. but thatās a bit more understable since they stopped making them in i think 2006. but newspapers? those have been around for what 200 years or more?
we still get one, next they are gonna ask what a TV is. ya know itās funny when i lose my celly & i had to get it replaced earlier this year i did go through withdrawl a bit but hereās whyitās not the texting as i donāt do much, iām a huge Film geek & so iām always on IMDB as i never use rotten tomatoes. or you tube when iām not home on my PC. but if i am not texting someone i talk to them on the phone i never use that stupid video chat
I was paying for coffee with a debit card recently and was asked if I wanted a receipt. When I said yes, I record debit transactions in my checkbook for when I balance my account. The barista said āOh, thatās cute! My grandma does that too.ā She the went on to say, she just checks her balance with the bank app on her cell phone.
After recovering from an āI must be getting old moment.ā I told her banks and merchants often make mistakes, usually at the customerās expense. Balancing your checkbook monthly can make sure those āmistakesā donāt compound and cost you money over time. The barista looked like I had just told her Santa Claus didnāt exist. She couldnāt wrap her head around the idea that banks and merchants make mistakes and donāt do anything about it.
