i canāt say that blame her for being just as confused as i am. but than i donāt know jack when it comes to art anyways. and i agree it was a pointless arc for what 2 weeks was it?
Luann, dear, āThis above all: to thine own self be trueā. What are you doing? Yesterday, you were rightly pissed at Taraās BS and attitude. Today, youāre wide-eyed, and going, āWow!ā and cooing over how Zebo was right about the A+. What happened to your brain? Shriveled up and fell out? Are you now trying to kiss up, praising Taraās word salad because you thought that would please Zebo?
Girl, grow a spine, stand up for yourself and be honest. Itāll get you farther in life than insincere flattery.
So, Iām duly impressed ā Prof. Zebo sees through Taraās B.S. and junk submission, and awards the appropriate grade. Lesson learned: you have to put in the time and effort to be properly rewardedā¦
I donāt think Community College art classes are this pretentious. Can someone remind me where they are again? Is it Moony? If it is, my opinion stands and these classes are a bigger waste of time.
Are the Evans trying to show us the plight of the humanities major? Can we see some STEM students please?
Tara: "Hey girlfriend! I got an āFā, but oh wellā¦ say thereās a cliff-diving expo tomorrow, with lessons for beginners! Wanna go? Oh yeah, that āteachassā thingā¦ jk. Donāt be mad, k? I was just havinā some fun. Nothing against you, really! Zeboās a piece of work, and it was soooooo fun BSāing him with my artwork and my (hah hah hah) explanation. Just use a jumble of fancy words and people will eat it up, cuz they donāt wanna look stupid and admit that they donāt understand a word Iām sayinā. Weāre good, right? No hard feelings? Letās have a soda!!!!"
Luann displays a distressing inability to one, know horse dropping when they are expressed, two, a disappointing tendency to not be able to stand behind her first instinct, before Tara made her class presentation, and, three, apparent loyalty or thrall to the dodgy Tara not to realize that Tara was insulting her in front of everyone, making fun of the assignment, and her proud achievement of being a TA. She is so naive essentially. I am also one who is not dismissing Prof. Zebo for any number of reasons, I think he is trying to get Luann to get to the next level past her naivete, and lack of ability to make a factual decision and stand behind it. Finally, some people actually believed that what Tara said was impressive. I would have graded her an F for that. It was total and complete nonsense. It reminds me of when I was in high school and the detention teacher made us write 500 words on the emotional tension inside of a red ping pong ball, gammatically correct. I knew Catholic high schools had some good points!! (lol)
Luann, Zebo knows youāre brownnosing him. It doesnāt work. He was testing you and you failed when you brownnosed him. You shouldāve stuck with your original assessment.
Okay, I claim partial credit. I nailed Zeboās recognizing Tara for the blabla artist she truly is. But I did not see it coming that Luann would think her explanation was brilliant.
So I think we are done in the classroom. Either a brand new arc Monday ā or we see Luann and Tara with their friendship on the line. Iām hoping Tara can surprise us by fessing up that she was the ass. Weāve had characters like TJ and Tiffany that showed us their good side eventually.
Zeboās doing what he should, making Luann think outside the box she knows. Wonāt say his lesson is easily learned. What Iād be curious about (and we have no knowledge of) was Zebo watching as they did their art and did he listen to what Tara said.
Tara is an interesting character, almost as interesting as Les. Sheās intelligent and more than a little head strong and with good focus will go far. What Iām afraid is her path is to self destruction and sheās going to crash and burn (train wreck). Iād love to see a little more in depth description of Tara and many of the newer characters. The characters and the flow is different than it was when Luann was in high school which is a good thing (sheās older and the world changes). Knowing them better would help feeling what the future holds for Luann (though I suspect itāll map close to K).
Zebo completely called it when he said he saw an expose of ironic duality. He was completely aware of Taraās attitude about the assignment. He is also one of those rare infuriating educators who will never pass up an opportunity to impart knowledge. Testing anyone who looks like they need to learn something with an ambiguity that almost ruins the lesson given. Then confound the student with a directness at odds with the teaching method. Every thing is done with a purpose to educate the pupil. If Luann hadnāt of fallen for Taraās sophistry that directness wouldnāt have been needed.
Taraās explanation wasnāt complete B.S. either. Exploiting dichotomies expressed her disregard about the assignment and her frustration with Luann calling her on it. Seeking oneness says she missed the point of the assignment. Whether she realizes it or not she is admitting she didnāt get it. She failed because she expressed her feeling about what was going on around the subject not the subject itself.
And now Luann will feel guilty forever about this F. This arc is fantastic. Luann was pressed between her feelings as a friend and her obligations as a TA. Even if she did not like Taraās explanation, she has tried to make get her an A+, but Zebo understood the truth about Taraās work ā¦ I hope that the friendship between Luann and Tara can survive this fact and be stronger. I hope Tara will have more respect for Luann.
Taraās explanation was obvious mocking of Zebo. If Zebo really grades on the artistās intent to convey something to the viewer, it is still an A. Of course it was hot air, what does he think she thinks about his lectures. Make that a A+ and 25 points of Extra Credit.
Iām just glad Tara is finally getting the F she deserves, which I think was Zeboās intent all along. He just needed for Luann to come to the same conclusion which she did not do! As for Luann, better luck next time. But it will be interesting to see how their āfriendshipā plays out.
2) Luann flip-flopped, and changed HER opinion, which was right the first time. So she loses a point. Luann should NEVER back down.
Now. Iāll be surprised if this arc continues into next week. Iāll be even MORE surprised if Tara cares one whit that she got an āF.ā This little āincidentā will probably be all but forgotten, Tara will act like she did nothing āwrong.ā But the bottom line IS, Tara got away with insulting her āfriendā Luann in front of God and everybody.
Which is an unfortunate, reoccurring theme within the VAST Luanniverse. The bad Guys like Ann Eiffel, Dirk, Les, and now Tara, can get away with insulting the good guys.
The good guys on the other hand, are expected to turn the other cheek, and just TAKE the insults.
Iād love to see the day that good guys fight back for a change in this Strip. HARD. I donāt mean to the point where helmets are ripped off and the baddies are pounded across the head with them.
But it sure would be NICE, to see the baddies get an āindefinite suspension.ā ;)
This is her first gig as a TA. He gives her zero direction, plays a mental shell game with her. Whether anyone thinks sheās not the sharpest knife in the drawer, thatās not fair on any level. Anyone would feel like a frog in a blender at that point. Way to encourage a young woman who thinks she wants to be a teacher, dotard.
I always have felt Zebo was too snooty but I think he wants to teach Luann to be a good teacher. She needs to be confident in her opinions so the students and her āfriendā respect her.
Thereās a bit of discussion about Luann and Taraās friendship, post still life project. If next week continues with this class sequence, friend or not-friend will play into the story. If GnK gives the art class a rest, the sting of Taraās snark will have abated and L and T will continue their relationship as in the past. Third option, Luann can be discussing her friendship with Tara with another character; perhaps Jack or Bernice.
The strip needs Tara. She brings dynamism and tension to the strip. She is almost the Anti-Luann. Brash, self-confident, independent, thrill seekingā¦
I normally donāt quote the late John Lennon or his colleagues (after all, the subject pretty much has been lavished and fawned over to the point of redundancy for the past 55 years or so). However, in an interview conducted shortly before his untimely passing, he mentioned something about being interrupted by a fan during an interview. The fan asked him about one of his lyrics on the Rubber Soul album. Lennon then responded not unlike Taraās āexploit dichotomies/savor onenessā babble, and the fan went away mesmerized. As soon as the fan was out of earshot, Lennon laughed and said to the interviewer, āSuch a load of B.S.! Theyāll believe anything just because I said itā. 39 years after the fact, he was apparently still right about that one.
Slightly reminds me of something that happened in class back in the 70ās. Our teacher told us a story and then asked āā¦how many of you think the person was guilty?ā¦ā About half the class, including me, raised their hand. Then he spoke more and made it sound as if those of us who thought the person was guilty were foolish. Again asked āā¦do you think he was guilty?ā¦ā A lot fewer hands were raised. This went on until only me and one other person insisted the person WAS guilty. The teacher really put pressure on us to change our minds. I held fast and said HEāS GUILTY! The teacher laughed and said āyouāre right ā he isā. When you know youāre right donāt let anyone bully you into changing your mind. (Loved that teacher).
Iāve always thought this Zebo character was an art-fart snob but you know what? Heās nailed Tara as a fraud and heās given Luann some insight into just how intellectual-sounding and intimidating BS can get tossed around and we donāt question it. Tara will make an excellent urban designer some day.
So, hopefully this is the end of the Tara/Art Class arc. There are 3 takeaways:

Be aware.
How many people will give Luann a dictionary and thesaurus for the holidays?
Luann is too impressed by a long string of large words instead of thinking about what they mean.
Tara is smart enough to know what they mean so can use them to flummox.
Zebo I am not sure about. He may be using specialized vocabulary for his field at least some of the time, but it feels like he might alternatively at times just be spewing to hear himself, or perhaps to see if any of his students have the smarts to call him on something he says or even just ask what he means. I have certainly known profs who lead on students to find out if any have been actually thinking or if all were just parroting. That is especially used on college freshmen by good profs, and sometimes used on early grad students.
Tara was still just goofing off and crumpled some crap in less than 30 seconds! ā¦
Luann DID call it, and Zebo recognized! If Tara honestly āstruggledā with the assignment (she did NOT), then leniency might have been an option. She didnāt, plain and simple!
Luann was trying to look good, and she āfailedā as well ā¦
I think itās good that Luann and Zebo are listening to each other and taking notice of what the other is saying. Iām especially impressed that Zebo asserted that Luannās first impression of Taraās āartā was, indeed, correct. Luann is only 19 or 20 years old, so itās understandable why she backed down, but after Zeboās reinforcement of her initial impression, Luann will be less likely to reverse her opinion again. I like the relationship that is developing between Zebo and Luann. He is helping her become a more confident and sophisticated person.
Luann wants badly to please Zebo who may have been looking to see if she would stick with her convictions. Itās a relief that he saw through Tara and gave her what she essentially deserved, and to Luann some food for thought.

Total deflation for Luann.
Total lack of clarification of (his) grading standards.
Total lack of backing up his TA.
With a side order of Luann ācavingā on her impressions ā which Zebo now confirms were right in the first place.
Zebo is a zero.
And with that, if G&K come back to this arc on Monday, I will be UDDERLY disappointed that they decided to MILK this even one more day!
