And here’s a whole room of that crap that Van Gogh couldn’t sell. How good of an artist could he have been, anyway?

(Yes, I do know he is considered one of the greatest painters of all time, and I agree with that, but I’m not a curmudgeon.)

This is why I dislike our local Gallery. The Art is questionable if the ‘Artist’ didn’t dump his waste can on the Gallery floor for a sucker to buy it up!

Eh. I would agree that a lot of art is crap. But some of it is very fine indeed. However, I much prefer to figure out for myself which is which, rather than read some or listen to some “art critic”.

Several years ago in my city there was a “bad art” exhibit. It was truly bad art, some even done by accomplished artists. I said to one of the curators that I’m concerned I could see one of my pieces up there. He said I’m not the only one who told him that.

The museum needs a roped in area with a large green carpet, a statue of some kid and a porch with a rocking chair. They could call it The Recovery Room.

Just like all other forms of art nowadays, it’s “you scratch my back…”! Look at the poetry – the published, but unknown “poets” all sound the same. Everyone writes to the pattern others of their ilk pretend to understand and pat each other on the back. They even “TEACH” creative writing, begorrah!

I’ve seen a whole lot of modern art, and some is quite good. But a whole lot of it I simply don’t get at all. It’s two squares on a canvas or something. Not even interesting colors. Why is it in the museum?

I think if you distinguish between a “gallery” -a store featuring art works of numerous artists for sale; and a “museum” – a public or private institution that displays curated works of usually accomplished artists, it will become much easier and enjoyable. Any creative endeavor by an individual can be called “art”. A house is a form of art – a skyscraper – autos ( oh so many ) are an art form.

I once went to an exhibit at the National Gallery in DC with a friend. As we were wandering through the halls, we came across a canvas just to the right of the doorway leading to the next gallery. It was about 3′ × 2′ and, apart from some slight texture change that could’ve been a wide brushstroke, was flat, and all white. It was titled something like “Study in White,” but could’ve easily been “Polar Bear in a Snow Storm.” My friend glanced at it momentarily as we passed through the door, then turned to me and said, “Gee, I wonder when he knew he was done.”

One definition of art is that is has to make you think. That limits its audience greatly. Many of the rest only think about its worth in cash terms, reverting back to the group not thinking. It’s doesn’t have to always make you think warm & fuzzy thoughts, just make you think. Curmudgeons lose out far too much, too easily. That’s a wasted life.
