We know you will, Goldie. As for the Puck wannabe – is that like one of those scary clown type dolls that you can punch or push and it won’t fall down? Those are enough to give me nightmares.
OT. Thanks to the many wonderful folks who wished me Happy 70th Birthday. About the recipes for the Hungarian Walnut Torte and the two frostings . . . .
My GF gave me a cat doll, life-sized, black, with piercing gold eyes. Her real cat McCali saw it, froze and began to hyperventilate. Poor kitty!! We traumatized her and felt so guilty afterwards!
There was an article online yesterday…one of the big box home stores had 12 foot tall articulated skeletons with led eyes. They sold out fast. Would love to see what Goldie and the Boys would do with one of those!
The shmoos were one of my favorite things in Lil Abner. I started on reading comics, with my Dad reading them to me, so I have many fine memories of comics I’ve followed as long as they existed, or until they were taken over by artists who promptly changed everything that was good about them. Sooo; “forum” query, who remembers old comics? Dick Tracy, Brenda Starr, Rick O’Shay & Hipshot Percussion, Charlie Brown & the Peanuts gang, Lil Abner, Mary Worth, Blondie, Hi & Lois, Beetle Bailey…..the list goes on, but I have to go. Let’s see who we remember!!!
Goldie, you totally deserve the huge spider you bravely caught yesterday. I am so sorry they took it from you. Of course all these decorations are cat toys!
Just a general question: Can somebody please explain the term Orbsters in relation to this comic strip? I saw a few references at the zoom meeting last night.
Most traumatic Halloween thing for our cats – one year I dressed up as a cat and when I put the ears on, our Orange boy absolutely freaked. He puffed out more than Elvis and ran from me. I was no longer “Mom.” I was a giant, scary invader! I took the ears off of course!
One Halloween when I was staying at my mom’s house and giving out treats, I dressed up in black jeans, black turtleneck, and a really weird furry wig (no ears, unfortunately) and painted on a rather scary cat face. Then I topped the costume off with big red wax lips with vampire fangs. The first trick-or-treater of the night was a little girl about five years old, dressed in one of those devil costumes from the Hallmark store, being driven from house to house by her mom in a big fancy Mercedes. She was so little I didnt make her ring the doorbell but went out to meet her. The kid was so terrified of my costume that she stopped stock still and wouldn’t come up onto the porch. I had to go down and drop the candy into her little hollow pumpkin. She still didnt move until I was back on the porch, at which time she turned and ran for her life, diving into the Mercedes. I considered my costume a great success, but decided the vampire lips were a bit much and put them away for the rest of the night to avoid traumatizing anybody.
I had a large monkey puppet that was best friends with my sister’s kids. It was big enough that I could give it facial expressions and movements. Other people’s pets would freak out about it. It didn’t smell real, but it moved real. One cat tried to kill him.
Global Cat Day —Formerly known as Feral Cat Day. Baba Mouse wants YOU to T-N-R! Because you love them, that’s why.
National Cut Up Your Credit Cards Day —Credit cards may be convenient, but they were also invented by the banking industry to make money. They are a shortcut to debt, and debt is only good for the lender. This is in spite of the fact that your credit worthiness goes down the less debt you have. That is ridiculous.
National Dictionary Day — I have an appetite for words “exceeding the greediest likings of the big people.” One of my so-called “faults” as a writer is using perfectly good words that a third grader doesn’t know. Yes, it was hell trying to write for structural engineers …
How did this terrible affliction come about? I was given my first dictionary in third grade. Look up one word, find five more, or ten, or twenty. Only problem was, having been force-fed phonics, I never did learn to spell … and still beat AutoCorrupt.
World Spine Day —You only have one (unless you are an invertebrate punster, in which case you are lucky to have a notochord.) (See previous entry). Seriously, they cannot be replaced, and repair is both risky and problematic. Even structural engineers think it’s a terrible joke. Take care of it, or it will “take care” of you (Mob definition.)
National Liqueur Day — Otherwise known as National Spinal Lubricant Day for those whose spines are problematic. (Obligatory disclaimer: The medical establishment does not recommend “self-medication,” and neither do I. YMMV)
Goldie was concentrating on drinking her coffee and not really looking right at Fake Puck which goes to show how inattention during multitasking can bite you in the butt!

From Stealers Wheel: Stuck in the Middle With You
After a wonderful evening last night
I met Orb friends who were just outta sight
Now this morning I made a spider attack,
Then I had to give the darn thing back
Bats to the left of me, spiders to the right
Here I am
Thought I was talking to you.
…….
Yes I thought I was talking to you, Puck
And I’m telling you what I’m gonna do,
There is a skeleton there for the taking,
And it’s mine, I’m gonna see it through
Bats to the left of me, spiders to the right
Here I am
Thought I was talking to you!
