Shannon showed her gentle side, but it would be expected of a six year old to get scared of a bird flying in a small space like a room of a house. Open the door, and shoo it out. As Shannon watches it fly away, she will be happy the bird is okay.
I’m still stuck on yesterday. Ox looks better and better since he’s getting to know Tiffany—just as Brad got better looking when he started going with Toni. I’d like to see Ox and Tiffany become a couple. They might be good for each other.
Many will recover if kept warm and allowed to rest. My wife is the bonked bird whisperer. She has an amazing recovery record if she gets to them right away.
Once, my wife called me at work to tell me there was a bird in the house. I assumed that one of the cats had brought her a dead bird. Imagine my surprise when I found out that it was alive and flying through out the house. My wife had locked herself in the bathroom and called me. Surprisingly, I’m still married to her.
I lived in a house where birds would occasionally get stuck in the chimney and I’d have to reach up in there and catch it and take it back outside. What a hoot, not.
This happens regularly in my class room where one wall is floor to ceiling glass. I will never forget giving a demonstration to the students while by back was to the window and at one point seeing a look of horror crossing all of my students faces then hearing the thunk. A hawk had chased a pigeon into the window directly behind me while my students watched. The pigeon died. No learning happened for the rest of the class period! I have since found reflective material to place on the windows to mitigate bird strikes.
A few months after moving into my current house, I had to get both a squirrel and a large woodpecker out of it (they came in through the chimney that lacked a cap to prevent such things). Thankfully both got out, without my hands-on assistance, through a door and window, respectively. But what I do remember is just how large that beak on that woodpecker was and how I put on the thickest pair of rubber gloves I could find.
I have held hummingbirds in my hands and warmed them until they recovered enough to fly away. That delicate little body and that fiercely beating heart is an amazing miracle in itself. For a larger bird it’s usually best not to try and touch or move them unless they are knocked completely out. If they are just startled they will be in shock and you’ll only make it worse. Just keep an eye on them and place some water in a small shallow dish nearby. They may need a drink as they recover. The bird will gradually begin to regain its senses. You may see it urinate or poop. This is actually a very good sign it’s coming around! Leave it alone and after a while you’ll see it moving around, then making some short flights. Eventually it will recover and fly away. I just had a robin encounter last week. Took the little guy several hours to fully recover but he made it. Oh and prayer never hurts!!!! I always say a prayer for them.
There was a hawk in my parents neighborhood that figured out that pigeons couldn’t see my parents large window when they were in a panic. About every other day there would be a large bang in the house when the hawk drove a pigeon into the window, which would break the pigeons neck, and then the hawk would just pick it up off of the deck. It lasted for about a summer before the hawk moved on.
Back when I was a young adult, our ginger cat Curry, who thought he was fierce, would sporadically bring in a bird in his teeth. I was the family member who was assigned to take the bird from Curry’s mouth and give him an assisted take-off. They usually zoomed up into the sky and headed off.
When my daughter was a small bear, she was unnerved by various insects in her room, particularly a firefly — she wrote and drew a hilarious cartoon about it — and I would pick up the millipede, mantis, firefly, or even spider, and carry him/her/it out of the back and over to the garden soil for release. Being tenderhearted with animals in general, I did that with slugs I met on the sidewalk, too.
For her 21st birthday, our daughter wanted to see the recycling plant at Atlantic City and its wind farm before studying the laws of probability at Mandalay Bay Casino. I was more interested in the recycling plant and wind farm myself, so I went with her. We got the nickel tour, her name on the message board, the $10 t-shirt, and my daughter hugged the giant windmill while puzzled Canada Geese looked on.
The highlight for me was meeting a Woolly Bear caterpillar on the landfill, who was clearly somewhere he/she/it should not. I carried the caterpillar over to a better place to live and let it go there.
I’ve got a picture on my phone of a hairy woodpecker that knocked itself silly on one of our windows. As he came to, he perched on my grandson’s shoulder, then flew away after his head cleared.
