She just came home and already knew that Luann had scrubbed and dusted? That girl is psychic. On the other hand this week does’t seem o be going anywhere.
So many totally miss the story here, Nancy found a way, through the but haphazard mini competition of the girls to lift herself out of her incipient middle-age crises, make them both feel affirmed, but the punch is that Lu trying to show she can be useful too ends up on toilet patrol, Bern might have a part-time job. Which she might enjoy btw. I laughed out loud when I saw the last panel. It’s only Thursday so wait for it though.
I read some of the comments from yesterday, and most of them were about how Bernice was “stealing” Luann’s thunder. I don’t think so and here’s why: Nancy is simply being appreciative of the help she gets from Bernice. Help is not something she gets from her own daughter, who lives there but never—as far as we know—does a thing to help out. How many times has Nancy yelled at Luann to clean her room? Too many to count. And how many times has Luann washed the dishes? Done the laundry? Cooked some meals? Cleaned the bathroom? Sure, as some of you will point out, she may do that off-panel, but when have we ever seen her do any of these things in the strip?
The point is, Nancy is all over Bernice because she gives Nancy something that Luann doesn’t: household help to keep the place going and to ease the burden on her.
Luann is not being portrayed as someone I’d want to be around. So that makes me wonder about the purpose of this arc and its length. Is it a throw-away? Will it end Saturday? Or, does it have legs and will expand on this beginning? If you’re into history, “The world wonders.”
Read and LEARN. Bernice has a good ATTITUDE. She is a hard worker. Luann? She is a slacker until she has a motive. In this instance, she did not want to appear lacking besides Bernice when her mother sees the organized bookkeeping binders so she dusted and scrubbed. This is a one-thing as far as she is concerned. She was NOT sincere in wanting to help her mom. Bernice was. So what if she did not display the attributes YOU wanted to see such as letting Luann take the credit? She did the right thing in pushing Luann to be honest with her mother about the binders. Luann has to learn not to glide by and take credit for things she did not do. She is not a child but an adult. It is time for Luann to understand that. I think Nancy agrees. Nancy DID notice her house was dusted and scrubbed and yet it was not the first thing Nancy said when she came home. She knows her daughter. Something was up and she was gonna find out. Moms are like that. She let Luann fidget until the end to tell her that she noticed. I think Nancy will have a talk with Luann tomorrow.
I think what Luann is missing here is that Bernice offered adult help (organizing the books) while she offered juvenile help (doing chores that she ought to be doing anyway. Bernice also does chores.) Luann has seen the least misfortune of any of them, and so she’s slowest to mature. She has seen trouble happen to others, but she has not herself hit a hard patch where she had to dig deep to find her strength to get through it. So she remains a child and her peers are passing her by.
Nancy is an amazing mother. She loves them, praises them and encourages them both and equally♡. The fact that she has asked Bernice to continue organizing accounting may help her understand that she’s better suited to do so than to be a psychologist, so to save years of future suffering for those unfortunates who might end up with Bernice as a psychologist… GO NANCY!!!
I don’t know what Nancy’s background was. Did she go to college? Did she take accounting classes? If she has some other background it might be better to hire an accountant to do the books. We know Bernice is studying to be a guidance counselor. She may be getting in way over her head.
My, how the pendulum swings in a day. Yesterday Luann looks like the victim, totally ignored by Mom while Bern gets all the accolades and today, well, panel 3 tells a whole different story. Suddenly Luann appears to be the lazy slacker who only cleaned the toilets for an “Attagirl!”. Maybe the pendulum swings back the other way tomorrow but it looks like Bernice will be offered a job of some sort, details to be ironed out later and Luann? Well I am sure Nancy loves her but if she noticed the eye roll and sarcastic “sure, pffft” from Luann in panel 3, it will be noted and addressed later as all actions have consequences. Luann might be lucky if Nancy was already focused on Bern and did not see it.
Now that Luann got the attention she wanted it seems she really didn’t want it? Perhaps this will be impetus for her to develop some marketable skills. OR! Maybe this is just an attempt by GnK to produce a gag strip?
So, Bernice has started a new relationship, has some stuff going on with her family, and may start a new job working for the Degroots. Luann has nothing going on at the moment.
Time for a new arc to advance Luann’s journey in life. Right? …Hello?
No one else feels like Nancy should be angry? A college aged friend of their daughter went through her personal financial papers and saw everything regarding their business. Bernice had to read everything to organize it. Some things are private and you should ask before rifling through…
IMO, what I think We’ll see the rest of this week (And this Arc) is Nancy continuing to shift her praise from Luann to Bernice. And Luann desperately playing “Hey mom, look what I did!” Perhaps at the very end, Nancy acknowledge her daughters efforts, and We’ll treated to a group hug.
Nancy continuing to praise Bernice. – CHECK
Luann desperately playing “Hey mom, look what I did!” – CHECK
There’s even the beginnings of a group hug in the second panel. – CHECK
I really don’t like Bernice at all, and Nancy has suddenly become an example or horrible parenting. She seems to have forgotten she has an actual daughter who obviously needs more direction in life. She needs to spend more time being concerned about Luann’s developmental problems instead of fawning over the ever-clever Bernice. Instead of paying attention to their family and her responsibilities at their business (like hiring an actual accountant) she is fine with letting a child (with no training at all) have access to all their financial records. Hello – there’s a lot more to bookkeeping than knowing the alphabet! Bernice has proven to be a manipulative little back stabber who is now being elevated above Luann in her own home and Nancy is wrong to allow it to happen, and worse, to becoming a part of it. I don’t find it amusing at all, but since Greg and Karen like every opportunity to put Luann down, I am not surprised.
I see a lot of people here dissing on Nancy for not appreciating Lu’s contribution. Well, it seems to me that Luann has been taking advantage of her “daughter” status way too long anyway. Cleaning house should be something she should have been doing all along. Does Luann work? I’ve seen no evidence of it. When has her room ever been clean? As for Nancy, she’s appreciative of Bernice helping her when Bern certainly didn’t have to. Bernice has taken up some of the slack, whereas Luann has simply done something she probably should have been doing every day of her life. So now Lu will be all jealous of Bernice, and think she’s trying to oust her from Nancy’s favor. I just wish Luann would grow up a little. Stop looking at the world through her entitled eyes and see some reality. Luann still acts like she’s in junior high school and not a grown-up young woman. It’s not attractive at all. As for Bernice, she is NOT suited to being a psychologist. But accounting? You bet. I suspect there won’t be much else to this arc. Bernice will be offered a part-time job keeping the books, and Luann will go back to her slovenly ways. It’s all so predictable.
Who can blame Luann for being less than enthusiastic? She did what she could, what she was capable of, what she thought was a help, and Bernice got showered with all the praise. I have a real problem with the image they are paint for Mrs. Halper. She is a woman who went through the hard decision of putting a child up for adoption and now has a daughter that refuses to be part of her life. It has to hurt. They image her as such a bad mom, and put her in competition with Nancy, who is such a perfect person, we know. What’s her side ol the story? I see her as a person who raised a daughter that studies hard and has goals, something that Nancy has failed miserably at with Luann. Maybe Mrs. Halper doesn’t like it so much that she has had to play second fiddle to Nancy for so long. It’s a bad reflection on Nancy that she relishes being the “cool mom” that Bernice gravitates to. If she really cared she would be encouraging Bernice and her mom get together.
is it possible that the take home message for Luann is that if you have a skill you enjoy and which is in demand, you can get work that you like and be a happy person. If not, you clean toilets and dust.
I get the feeling that Bernice’s mom never thanked her much for her organizational efforts. Like the silverware drawer incident here from before, there was probably a lot more clash than gratefulness.
Some people here keep harping on how Luann is a lazy slob who never does any household chores, because “we never see her do anything on panel.”
Yet they praise Bernice for doing all sorts of household chores, even though that’s never shown on panel either. The only thing Bernice has ever been shown doing is making breakfast.
ONCE!!!
Yet people are perfectly willing to assume that Bernice is the DeGroot’s live in maid, housekeeper, cook, laundress, etc.
You do realize, if that were true, then Nancy would have plenty of time to devote to her bookkeeping because she wouldn’t have to worry about cooking or cleaning the house.
How does Bernice take all those papers and magically file them in the right places? How does she know what was paid and what wasn’t? How does she know what was important and what wasn’t? Was it even her business to be looking through all those papers that may have confidential info in them? I was expecting this arc to go another direction.
Thank heavens the girls knew exactly what to do. A few days ago, Nancy looked all tired and haggard, and by the last two panels today, she is all chipper!
