When I was a kid, my mom and dad were laughing at what had happened to one of their married friends adventure. This was back in the 1960’s. It was a RV they were driving or maybe a trailer they were pulling. I can’t remember. They stopped at a gas station in the middle of the desert ( I think it was the 15 in the Barstow California area). Wife was driving this time. Hubby had been sleeping in the back or in the trailer. Wife fills up gas tank and doesn’t notice hubby had gotten out of the RV to get something in the convenience store. Wife takes off without hubby. I can’t remember the exact details but I think it is miles later when she is pulled over by a Calif. Highway Patrol officer and he asks her if she knew where her hubby was. Answer. In the back sleeping. Of course she then realizes what happened with that question. Had to drive all the way back to the gas station to pick him up. He was smart enough to call the Highway Patrol and they were gracious enough to go and track the RV down. I think that is how it happened.
I’ve never left my wife at the store but I did, along with my friend and his son, leave his 80-year-old mother sitting at the St. Louis Airport. The plane was in the air before anyone realized that we’d forgotten Granny!
Friends of my family were in that situation. They were on a long trip and stopped for gas. She went to the rest room while he ran in to pay. About 10 miles down the road he realized she was not there. Their marriage went downhill after that.

The fact that he wasn’t being interrupted should have tipped him off.

While looking ahead to see where you’re going,
and checking your rear view mirror to see what’s behind you,
… it’s also good to look to your left and to your right …
… to see what is (or isn’t) beside you.

It’ similar to an old Garrison Keillor story in his “Report From Lake Wobegone.”

Seems a lot of drivers think about where they are going and what they are going to do there, than where they are. Wonder there aren’t more accidents.

Gonna have to tell her all over. On the good side, she’s probably not talking to him, so no shouting.

AlanM about 2 years ago
My daughter and I did that once.
Left my wife at the store.
We didn’t realize it until we got home (@ 2 miles) and saw her car in the driveway.
She didn’t know we had left the store.

Garrison Keiller wrote a story about this happening. The wife assumed he had been mad at her and was contrite for days.
