I love it when Lupin’s deafness is showcased not as a disability, but just another thing about Lupin – in this case, a superpower! The food processor is no threat to him!
The year we had a momma raccoon with babies in our kitchen soffit (waited until they were old enough to be out of the house to patch up the hole) I felt so guilty using the food processor. They would go from happily purring and playing to total silence. I’m so sorry guys, but this is my kitchen! I gotta cook somewhere!
“Well, that’s no ordinary food processor! That’s the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered food processor you ever set eyes on! Look, that food processor’s got a vicious streak a mile wide, it’s a food killer!”
Beatrix: I see you’re playing your DnD bard’s lute, Natasha. How long have you been playing.
Natasha: As long as I can remember. It was a gift from Ta-Natash, my grandma to the nth power.
Bea: Oh, like Violet’s Nana Infinity, Violet-Ifa. I met her once, you know.
Tash: Yeah, they come and visit us every so often. Space time anemones, you know.
Bea: I’ve heard they can be tricky. Remember when Tommy found one?
Tash: Yes. Although he did have a nice visit to his ancestor Thomios. And brought back some of that divine Xanadu honey.
Bea: That inspired Trina from the University of Queen Bee Hive Management to start a modern day hive. They’re on the lookout for magical flowers all the time.
Tash: They don’t have to look far. There’s magic in the most mundane things.0
Ooh, BCN has a laugh track now. Better use it wisely Burt, unlike certain sitcoms. Meanwhile, the Woman and her food processor have invoked Puck the Boxer, one of the most dangerous forms our reporters can take. Looks like it’s fisticuffs!
My girl Jez concurs. She hangs out in the kitchen any time I’m in there, but whenever I was even about to run the food processor, she was “outta here in second gear”.
I’m guessing Lupin isn’t running away because he can’t hear much/anything. My father would sometimes do that with his hearing aid when my mother blabbed too much.
Yup. Years ago we found out a certain, now deceased, cat was deaf through his not running away when I used the blender. He got first licks forever after no matter what I was blending. All that time we thought he was just a bit more aloof than the others. The present clowder behaves like Georgia’s, any kitchen appliance sends them scattering away. Except, of course, running the can opener or pulling out the proper knife to slice freshly cooked fish or other meat. I swear they can tell which knife I am pulling out of the block by the sounds. (When cooking animal based protein we always add a bit more to feed the cats and dogs because we know they will always be begging for whatever we are making). The joys of living with pets.
I have a chart of noise levels and their hazard ratings. Blenders are rated at 90 dB. Sounds over 85 dB for extended periods can cause permanent hearing loss, in this case 30 minutes or more.
MIne don’t mind the appliance sounds. His Majesty thinks it is a call to help mom. HM will be in the kitchen and on my shoulder before I know what hit me.
Quite enjoyed today’s Off the Mark comic. It reminded me of recent adventures of our furry BCN friends: https://www.gocomics.com/offthemark/2023/05/21?ct=v&cti=703083 Sharing for anyone who may not have seen it.
I like the crushed ice you get in take out cold beverages, so I asked for and received a countertop ice crusher for Christmas one year. That little thing makes such an eardrum busting noise that I can’t stand to use it. It now sits in the highest cabinet over the kitchen sink, the one that requires a ladder to reach.
We have BIG garage doors. We always warn each other when we are opening one. The cats hate them too. We say ‘DOOR’ and they tense up. Last week I put my hand on the opener and they both took off running before it opened.
Puck steps up to the podium as he gets ready to defeat the relative of the evil vacuum cleaner, this is it people the fight of the century and puck unleashes the TINY BOPS OF JUSTICE! Super effective at getting rid of evil vacuum cleaners and vacuum cleaner relatives. Food processor unleased the VERY LOUD NOISE how will Puck stand for this? BY UNLEASHING THE FURIOUS BOPS OF JUSTICE AND FENDING OFF THIS VERY LOUD FOOD PROCESSOR OMC HE DID IT THE FANS GO WILD Puck raises his head in truimph!

I’m with the clowder on this one … The one time I tried to make salsa with the food processor, I went too far and had to turn it into gazpacho.

Leave the reporting on loud appliances and power tools to Lupin.
I empathize with the cats. I have a blender that I love, but I have to wear earplugs when I use it.

Boy, you can sure pick out the old people in this comic. One of the top complaints by old people in a recent survey was dislike of noise, loud or not.

Mmm yeah! (Woo, woo)
Woman thinks it’s tasty, as long as it’s firm, not pasty
But most cats will puff and jump right down
But, baby, baby, it’s the best kibble salad around
’Cause that food chopper is a loud round scrambler
Whirrin’ like I don’t know how
Baby, full of flavor, there’s salsa in the pink house now
This noisy condition got bonkers opposition
Don’t you know that Puck is still wild
Baby, I can’t say, but you done told me
They call it the tumble and dice
Call it the tumble and dice, yeah
