What is sad and aggravating is that the only things that are consistently recycled are glass bottles, Aluminum cans, paper and cardboard. We really need to promote research to find better ways to recycle plastic.
Like many in the comments, I am sad to say most plastic “recycling” never gets recycled but ends up in the landfill. We simply have to move past plastic packaging. We had packaging before plastic, and we can have a new kind that actually doesn’t stay in the environment forever or kill the oceans or add so much to climate change. It just takes the will to change.
Meanwhile, Darryl burned gasoline from refined oil that required electricity from a coal burning power plant emitting carbon products while also emitting carbon products; leaving micro-rubber material on the roadway to be washed into the lakes and rivers polluting the water supply, etc.
Nobody seemed to notice that this is an example of what’s wrong with these kids: They shouldn’t have the power to coerce parents into doing whatever they want them to do! Zoe has been brainwashed!
Really Daryl? You let Zoe guilt you into wasting gas and time to go to a hazardous dump site, which in most cases people are not allowed, to find one bottle?? You are an idiot. Recycling is important but so is teaching your kids who and what is important and who is in charge.
Recycling would be a whole lot better if more than 10% of what we put in to it actually got recycled. For the most part, we’ve all been hooked by a bait and switch media campaign where we get warm fuzzy feelings about helping the environment when in reality very little recycling actually happens.
And now we are going to sit here and wait until the “recycling” truck comes by. We will then follow it to the same landfill and watch as the metal is sorted out and the rest is dumped on the same piles that you just had me go through.
That foot distracts from the responsible daughter. And the whole story reminds me of my unfortunate situation in that there is NO recycling here. It’s why PA is the landfill capital of the US.
While I am happy that Zoe is environmentally conscious, why did she wait till the garbage truck had already collected? Zoe should have encouraged Darryl earlier.

Leave Zoey in the dump. The rest of the family would be much happier.

The irony is that that’s what actually happens regardless of the special bin.

We have bags and bags of recyclables in the garage. If we ever take them somewhere we can park in the garage again.

Nope, chances are it ends up in the trash again – and all that gas was wasted and added to climate change.

So we drive a huge SUV miles to recycle one small plastic bottle…

I don’t get it. Are they both going to the dump, and to their own plastic recycling bin?
Oh! I get it! He’s having second thought when throwing it, and takes it home, to recycle it.
Then the question will be: Why on earth would he drive away first???
Second question: Why didn’t Zoe go out and recycle it herself? Or, better, put in the temporary storage used to collect different items?

“There! It’s recycled!”?? She (and maybe he) has so much to learn….

If Zoe wanted it recycled that badly, Darryl should have made her find it.
