I dislike the introvert stereotype. Extroversion / introversion is not a dichotomy. It is a spectrum that we all exist on, and sometimes our position of the spectrum changes depending on our situation or our mood. Some days I feel very outgoing and social; other days, I just want to stay home and not talk to or see anybody.
Next time somebody says something like, “Oh, aren’t you shy!,” respond with, “Oh, sorry, sometimes I forget tha people can be uncomfortable with silence.”
There is someone else there besides Carl. The lights are on. Somebody put up the signs, made the coffee, set out cups and snacks, and arranged the chairs.
Curiously, on the Meyers-Briggs introversion / extroversion scale, I came up an X which is someone right in the middle. Large crowds neither energize nor enervate me. They are just crowds in which I am immersed.
I don’t need to follow the usual multi-step plan organizations like that offer to “integrate” you back into “normal” society. I get along fine with family, friends and even strangers. I just need me time to unwind and get ready ready for the next round. And the larger the group, the soon I need it.
This reminds me of something Johnny Carson mentioned on The Tonight Show; he held up a newspaper advertisement for a meeting of agoraphobics, and commented, “Who’s going to show up?”
Introverts don’t need to have meetings, we enjoy our own company and can entertain ourselves. I feel sorry for people who do not enjoy being alone and have to be with someone, anyone, to be happy.
Apparently, lots of actors are introverts; introverts, so I was told when studying psychology, push themselves to ‘act out’ – be the life of the party.

That’s not realistic – Introverts aren’t necessarily shy. They would show up to the meeting.
They just wouldn’t say anything.

I can have a solitary meeting at home, thanks. Not shy, just don’t feel the need for a dozen people’s company. Ever.

Actually, Carl was showing up for the meeting of Procrastinators Anonymous, scheduled for the same room from 3 to 5.

This is a test. This is only a test. If you showed up, you failed.

I can relate. The noise of people talking and not saying anything is annoying.

Finally, Carl has a good chance to win at a round of “musical chairs.”

The seats should face the other way. Introverts avoid others’ gazes.

The ability to be invisible in a crowd is a gift, not a disorder.

Introvert-inclined folks can make effective leaders because they observe more and develop insights into personnel, etc.

The best thing is that he won’t be expected to call them up and ask what happened.

No introverts would go to a 4 hour meeting. 1 1/2 hours is my limit for being around people.

the difference between an introverted and extroverted computer science engineer is…….The extrovert looks at your shoes when he is talking to you.
