Earl can do it … he just needs to scoot himself across the floor until he gets to the kitchen and then pull himself up using a chair and the table legs.
Maybe he can turn to his left and use the couch to get back up. It wouldn’t be a pretty sight from our perspective, but at least he will be up and enjoying his Banana Cream Pie.
After returning home from hospital, I had one of several falls at home, and could not get up to go to bed (I was by myself), so I dragged myself along the floor on my back until next to my bed. It then took me about 15 minutes to pull myself up into bed. Very disconcerting. Ain’t old age fun?
A couple months ago I was driving home and there was an old lady in the street, she was on her knees holding on to a walker about 3ft into the road from the sidewalk. It was a residential area so no lines on the road and I watched the car in front of me just drive around her and keep going.
I stopped to see if she was ok or needed help. She said I was the 5th vehicle and the only 1 who stopped! While I was there several other cars went around us, at least 3 with men in them and just watched and kept going as I struggled to lift her to her feet (I have 7 herniated disks in my back/neck, have had several spinal surgeries etc)
As this was the street both I and the old lady live on (though we’d not met before) these were, I assume, our neighbors so it was honestly pretty disappointing to me that none of them stopped!
Wait’ll Earl gets to the kitchen and finds out there is no banana cream pie, and Opal only said there was to motivate him to get off the floor. This trick only works once, though. Next time she’ll have to say she made him a chocolate layer cake with extra chocolate frosting.
I recently had cataract surgery, and for the first week after you’re not supposed to bend over, (head can’t be lower than the heart.) I’d never had any idea how many things I drop on the floor during the day!! Had to do some fancy stepping.

As I’ve posted before, “Proper motivation”.

After a certain age, you need a plan to get up off the floor.
I practice from time-to-time but always have my phone, just in case.

Nothing’s impossible, Earl had found
For when his back was on the ground.
He picked himself up,
Brushed himself off
And went for a fresh pie slice again …

Old ad maxim: appeal to the lowest levels of human desire, i.e., something for nothing and you are guaranteed a taker.

So that explains why they always have Banana Cream Pie in the cafeteria at the hospital where I work.

Opal has proved that there is some truth in “mind over matter” with Earl.

Earl better get moving before Roscoe, who is in the kitchen, finishes the entire pie.
