    Conservatives and Republicans give lip service to words like “freedom” and “liberty,” but their policies promote only the opposite for everyone else but themselves.

    When conservatives blather their usual hollow lip service about “freedom” or “liberty,” what they mean is “freedom” for extreme far-right religious fundamentalist evangelicals, ginormous corporations and the few wealthiest elites to run roughshod over the rights of workers, consumers and our shared environment, but want to micromanage and dictate control over every aspect of everyone else’s personal lives.

    In reality, conservatives want to take away liberty and freedom from everyone else and micromanage every aspect of others’ private lives.

    Conservatives are the ones who want to dictate total control over private relationships (dictate who you can or can’t marry or even what private behavior choices among consenting adults are allowed behind closed doors), private medical choices (reproductive choices such as abortion, IVF or even contraception, medical or recreational marijuana, end of life choices, stem cell therapies, gender-identity care), tell us what books we or our children can have access to, or try to force PRIVATE religion into PUBLIC policy and religious rituals into public meetings or subsidize it with special tax advantages (socialized religion).

    Freedom means that individuals, not the government, can move freely, behave as they want, and make their own choices about how to live their lives. It means we are free to fly wherever our wings can carry us, and no longer limited to the comfort our own songs within the confinement of our cages, however gilded (tip of the hat to Maya Angelou, I know why the caged bird sings).

    They key isn’t abortion or babies or women’s health. They don’t really care about. No, their issue is women making their own decisions about sex without the sanction of some man in their lives. That’s why it’s not going to stop at Roe. It’s not even going to stop at birth control. These are just the opening acts.

    The draconian measures they are taking should be alarming to everyone because they are showing us that they are planning to cheat the election system in order to win instead of making laws that most of us want and need. Tax cuts and eliminating social security and Medicare to pay for the cuts should NOT be a party policy. We all need to VOTE BLUE to stop the GQP.

    As someone with national NHS I get a giggle over politicizing health care and states rights in obviously an issue that should be national. I can’t remember the last time reproductive choice was even brought up here.

    1. Return women to the home and out of the public sphere… kitchen & having babies are all they should be doing… and better be happy and fully satisfied by their second hand status.

    2. The fertility rate in the United States has been trending down for decades, and a new report shows that another drop in births in 2023 brought the rate down to the lowest it’s been in more than a century.

    There were about 3.6 million babies born in 2023, or 54.4 live births for every 1,000 females ages 15 to 44, according to provisional data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics.

    Get those white women pregnant to counter “the great replacement theory”.

    A local Walgreens has removed the “Family Planning” sign above the aisle where they are kept. I don’t shop in that department, but it looks like a much smaller selection. And Walgreens allows cashiers to refuse to sell contraception.

    The abortion issue isn’t even about abortion. The real point is that if they can take away a right that has been in place for over fifty years, what rights are they coming after next?

    Some red states are now contemplating laws that will prohibit women from leaving the state to get an abortion — or penalizing them after they return home if that’s what they’ve done. And they’ll point out that nobody has a “right” to an abortion specifically listed in the Constitution. Nor is there a “right” to travel freely specifically listed in the Constitution. They don’t even bother to add that there’s no “right” to be free from torture specifically listed in the Constitution. And therefore, to their way of thinking, nothing wrong with legislation that does any or all of those things. And then they’ll sit back, smugly grinning, and cross their arms, thinking they’ve made an irrefutable argument in favor of their authoritarian fascism.

    But they haven’t.

    When James Madison was drafting the Bill of Rights, a number of the other founders expressed reservations, thinking that later citizens would inevitably make the case that those were the ONLY rights being protected; that if a specific right wasn’t explicitly mentioned in the Constitution, then it didn’t exist and could be infringed, suppressed, penalized, etc.

    Madison addressed this concern with the 9th Amendment, which made it clear where the balance of power was supposed to lie if such a claim were ever raised: “The enumeration in the Constitution of certain rights shall not be construed to deny or disparage others retained by the people.”
