Iām having the opposite problem with Gracie tonight. Sheās started climbing on me to go to bed before I can get ready. LOL She used to wait for me to get the lights off, CPAP mask on and coversā¦but lately she just hops on. Then she gets annoyed when she gets dislodged while I do all of that. But what a wonderful way to prepare for bed.
When my kids were old enough to start school I told them that they didnāt have a bedtime anymore. They could stay up as late as they wanted as long as they stayed in bed and read. There were conditions though. They had to keep their grades up, get up in the morning the first time I called, and not act fussy or cranky.
This reminds me that when I was a kid my bedroom was upstairs. When I was supposedly in bed sleeping my parents would still be awake, downstairs, so they couldnāt see the light under the closed door to my room. But if I heard one of them come up the stairs Iād quickly turn the light off. I never heard them say one word about the odd click they heard as they came up the stairs. Either they didnāt notice it, or they didnāt care, or maybe ā this just dawned on me ā they would walk up the stairs just to get me to turn the light off.
Thanks for all the well wishes yesterday. Made it Saint Louis with a safe flight. Reading on my tablet so commenting is not so easy as with my computer.
During the summer, if I had a great book, I would read all night until I heard my dadās alarm go off at 6. Then I would quickly and quietly turn out my light and go to sleep. Of course my mother was in bright and early to wake me, and I had to wake up happy and start my day. ::She smiles::
I may have made my near-sightedness worse reading with a flashlight under the covers. So we made a rule: The kids could stay up as late as they wanted if reading by proper light. They had to get up on time, without protest. Both have had perfect vision all their lives (now in their thirties) in spite of both parents being nearsighted.
This hits way too close to home. I hated bedtime because it always came at the most exciting part of whatever book I was reading. Found out real quick that the hallway light gave enough light to continue reading. Got caught reading after bedtime quite often. No dessert, no TV, and other punishments wouldnāt keep me from reading ā even after bedtime. Later on ā used a flashlight and made sure bedroom door was locked at night. One blessing ā only girl so I had my own bedroom. Even now I still read from about midnight to about 3 am and am so glad Iām retired. And thank goodness for Kindle and dark mode.
OZ reading instead of sleeping is kinda relatable. Sometimes you just donāt wanna sleep cuz you arenāt tired so you just read till like an hour before midnight (anyone?? no? just me)
When we were told to ālights outā we would ask if we could continue to read until the end of the chapter. If no, then until the sentence ended at the bottom of the page. That was usually a yes that allowed us to continue to the end of the chapter. I donāt think we fooled anyone but ourselves with that method.
Right now, Iām rereading Advise and Consent for the umpteenth time. It concerns 4 US Senators and their struggle with an unscrupulous President and Supreme Court Justice over a prospective Cabinet nominee. Amazingly prescient for a book published in 1959. If you like reading about U.S. Senators, I cannot recommend highly enough John F. Kennedyās nonfiction Profiles in Courage, published in 1956 while he was a Senator himself.

Elvis-Anum: So youāve been writing your story down from the beginning?
Mag-Lor: Yes. I donāt know if anyone will ever read it, but I would like to share it.
Beatrixia: I would love to see it.
Mag-Lor: Itās in Tengwar script, not everyone can read it.
Elvis-Anum: I can. I learned Elvish during my travels in my youth.
Mag-Lor: You did the Dancing Corsair training?
Elvis-Anum: Yes. I learned many languages then.
Mag-Lor: Then would you like to transcribe the scrolls?
Elvis-Anum: Absolutely! You have a story that needs to be told!
Beatrixia: And that means you would need to return here when the scrolls have been completed.
Mag-Lor: Not a problem. I think I would enjoy some more Xanadu Honey and exquisite cheeses.
Queen Catshepsut the Golden: Since the hour grows late, I propose you spend enjoy our evening entertainment and stay overnight.
Fe-Anaro: Thank you most kindly, Your Majesty. We will take our leave of you on the morrow.
