Jock’s patience must be slimmer than the goth’s.

Yeah, this guy’s a really thick smoothie…. – And not a straw in the world, to reach in…or spoon…

This Emo/Goth guy is so lucky that the “buffoon” doesn’t pound him into the ground. The other day he called him an oaf. Most people don’t get away with insulting guys twice their size. Maybe the “Oaf” needs to look up the words in a dictionary.

This is why I was really hoping that Luann would be given a chance to go to New York immediately. That could have given her an opportunity to concentrate on ’what’s next’, instead of getting stuck in regrets about what has passed.

Our jock friend here reminds me of me when it came to dating. I was also socially retarded when it came to the opposite gender. I couldn’t read subtle cues or not so subtle cues.

I think Ox could beat Oaf into the ground, fortunately, they both seem to be “gentle giants”, so, chances are they would just play a game of hoops, if they ever needed to settle things between them.

At least this Jock is showing some interest in Luann. When Luann was in high school, all the boys wanted Tiffany and ignore Luann. But Jock should seriously take Emo’s advise.

I think Quill will return, possibly after this NY trip. He was shuffled off-strip too quickly to be gone forever. I think Luann just needs to mature a bit more. Ironic, I was never a fan of Quill & Luann (I thought he was a better fit for another off-strip character) but have…evolved on the relationship.

So Emo kid is going to make a play for Luann then.

If Luann is going to hook up with a jock type, maybe it should be Ox.

Then again, Ox is a good guy. I don’t know if I’d want to see her drama inflicted on him.

Guys have different brains; they only have 2 centers for social interpretation, women have 7 or so. Guys are better at building bridges and inventing phones and atom bombs, women better at keeping humanity alive. I know, I sound sexist, these are generalities. I’ve had long talks w clients over thirty five yrs & there are more male carpenters than female, & more female nurses…) Anyway, more => to Luann at hand - it’d be a treat to see Luann blossom w some “male” characteristics (like being a little bold in NYC) or maybe see these young men blossom with some “female” attributes (like empathy or thoughtfulness). 7Very interesting! Perhaps Greg is developing the underpinnings to an arc where Luann may date Emo? It may be that his awareness and understanding of her situation may be attractive to Luann. She may eventually develop an interest in him and he may develop an interest in her? I would like that scenario quite a bit and hope that is what Greg is working towards!!!

Rebound relationships with a good girl aren’t nearly as fun as rebound with bad girls trying to make up for stuff.

@ PipeTobacco, I agree! Then we could maybe get a glimpse of the world beneath Emo’s protective hat, his back story. There could be some interesting interactions between him and Luann … and him and Quill … and (chuckle) between him and Tiffany. Nice “color contrasts”. Carpe diem!

I saw the joke coming, and I laughed anyway.

Argy…. as you and I both know… we disagree on the actions/motivations of Quill. You see him as a work-a-holic who treated Luann badly, while I tend to view him mostly as a young kid who is heavily focused on his college and career aspirations (which I see as relatively normal for a motivated kid at his young age).However, where both you and I tend to agree is in that both of us (I believe) hope that Luann does not go back to Quill in a romantic sense.For me, I think the Quill/Luann relationship represents what I hope is Luann’s last “high schoolish” style relationship…. a type of relationship where she is “all consumed” about the relationship to the exclusion of other facets of her life.My hope is that Luann’s next relationship…. whenever that develops… is a more well rounded one for her. What I mean is that I hope that Luann has a stronger focus on her own individual goals and aspirations before she enters into a relationship. In this way, I think she will be able to better find the right person for her….. Luann will better know who SHE, herself is, and therefore she will better know who is a good romantic fit, and the PARTNER too will have better knowledge of who Luann is as well.

I am in no rush for Luann to pair up with anyone, even the sensitive Emo. (have to look that up some day). It takes a lot of emotional energy to have the kind of relationship that Luann seems to need, energy better spent on developing herself and her own passions.

Jocks I’ve known tend to be focused on the present moment. And they’ll hit on a knotty pine board, so it’s not necessarily a great compliment to Luann.

Well, we know these two guys are not much the same..Both are quite unattractive in certain ways, but more normal in other ways.

And @ ArgyThree, you said “Piro is busy being homeless, so he wouldn’t want to date anyone.” What? [gently-] The homeless have lots of time on their hands. Too much maybe — many of them have no job. He has more free time on his hands than most of the other characters in this strip! Before you make that call, please get a little real life experience (like working with the homeless, for instance). We know next to nothing about Piro. Maybe that will change. Peace, CM.

@sbwertz, I can see you are very proud of your son, and it is a great example of how a “clueless” student (I’m thinking of a character here) can blossom into an admirable adult with impressive achievements. Steve Jobs dropped out of college. So who knows where Ox and Emo boy will be in ten years? Maybe the president of Columbia, who knows?

Is it possible that Tiffany is starting to have feelings for Gunther?

Carl Sagan would be amazed how involved, people who inhabit a three dimensional world could become so immersed in a printed two dimensional world….

this thread is becoming a disappointiment.. What looked like an opportunity for Luann to channel her emotions into some decent art is turning into a potential interaction between Jock (alias, buffoon) and Luann.

I would like to know more about these two characters. We know that one is sensitive, and the other is gentle with his friend and considerate when he gets the message, but perhaps like to tease his friends a bit, too. Either might be interesting individuals.

Luann needs casual dating and casual times out with friends that are not dates. She needs to better realize the value of male friends as well as her female ones, and enjoy some time without romance.

Sounds like he has “cartoonist envy” to me.

I do not understand the “redundant” comment. Why not have multiple people in any minority, including body types? Why should anyone who is not within one specific group be considered “covered” by token representation? Yes, it is not possible to follow a large number of characters, but not all have to be regular characters if they get across that the world has more than one person of this or that type.

Perhaps “Jock” is Ox re-imagined on Evans’ part?

This isn’t exactly action packed, but after the intensity of the Luann-Quill break up and the teasing closeness of Gunther-Tiffany, maybe this is like half time for the first stringers to re-group and take a good look at their respective relationships. It would really be nice to see Tiffany happy.

Jock is big and maybe a bit coarse, but (as I’ve said before) he is not malicious. He just has a really short attention span, and can’t imagine anyone having one longer than his. He and Emo seem to be pals of an Odd Couple sort….
