Jack, I believe this is simply a coincidental event that you bumped into each other. Bernice walks to sort out her thoughts, not for exercise. Observe, Jack. She is not dressed for exercise. She’s in her regular clothes. However, she will need your friendly chatter to get her mind off the heavy stuff – like avoiding her brother. But these things tend to creep into conversations so she can use your advice.
This is what really burns me about Karen’s writing style. Two weeks ago Ben shows up at Luann’s place looking for Bernice. He tells his story to Luann and asks her to help. Last week Luann tells her that Ben wanted to talk with her, which lead to an extreme panic attack as Bernice was unable to go on. After convincing herself that there’s nothing wrong about seeing her brother Bernice is seen walking to or away from her parent’s house when Jack appears and suddenly Ben is out of the picture as Bernice obsesses with Jack’s bulges. It’s going to be a week or more of Jack before Bernice gets back to Ben — if she ever gets back to him. This week should have been Bernice knocking on the door and saying “Hi” to Ben. This should have been the resolution to the arc and next week starting a new story. But Karen wants to interrupt a major story line, leave her readers hanging while she indulges in Bernice’s horniness. She wastes our time with these distraction and creates the expectation that nothing ever gets resolved.
Uh Jack? News Flash. Our heart’s are “a-pumping” all the time, my well meaning friend. For those who’s hearts aren’t? Well, wearing a coat is the LEAST of their worries.
What IS it with Jack, and his desire to get something “pumping,” anyway? The last time he said something like that was at Kidz First, a few years ago and Tiffany was just about ready to have his baby. But I digress.
Oh Bernice? Take your eyes off “Mr. Bulging Pecs” for a second. What about Ben? You remember? B-E-N? Your long lost brother “BEN” who you have been inexplicably avoiding, like “folks” avoid a “super spreader event” sponsored by people they don’t like? THAT “Ben?”
Look why don’t you get this “train wreck” on the road? Tell Superman here what the problem is. Then ask him to fly “wingman” for your at the next Halper dinner to re-meet Ben? The quicker you bring Jack over for dinner, the quicker Ben, Ben’s kids, and your mom and dad will ALL get the WRONG idea that Jack is your “Hearts going Pitter-Pat” Fiancé, be happy for you, and start planning the epic wedding.
And the sooner you do that, the sooner Jack will realize he royally screwed up and think to himself, “Hey! If I marry Bernice, then I can’t date other women anymore!” Then run to Luann for help in getting out of this “mess” he got himself into by jogging down the wrong street. ;)
Interesting irony. Jack is not the psych major but he senses something is not right. He’s the animal person, the dog whisperer who instinctively hones in the the problem. He knew what to give Bern for a gift. What else can Jack do? OOOH it’s only tuesday.
We have to keep in mind that Luann and her friends are about sophomores in college. They shouldn’t be focused on finding their soulmates. Even though Bernice seems to overdo it on the studying part of school, she is on the right path to having a successful career. Her fumbling around in the romance department is a learning experience. When she meets the right person she will come out of her shell and be happy. Of course this doesn’t make interesting story lines, so I guess we will just sit back and go along for the ride.
Yesterday I was called a lunatic by an illustrious member of this marvelous gathering of souls.

A tooter who tooted a flute, tried to teach to young tooters to toot. Said the two to the tooter, “Is it harder to toot, or to tutor two tooters to toot?”
Bernice is feeling too many feelings now and I love it ♡. Jack is an adorable naive (like Luann), but he has now noticed that Bernice may have a problem. Let’s the moment of confidences and advices begin♡!!!
I think Jack and Bernice are cute together. She needs someone she can talk to, and even though she might be crushing on him a bit, she realizes that he is, first of all, a friend.
Jack is a little slow at picking up on things, but he has to be noticing that Bernice cannot hold a normal conversation. She stumbles over a casual conversation about exercise. Jack will soon realize how neurotic Bernice is.
Oh, finally, enlightenment! Can he be a good listener and/or can Bernice stop stumbling over words and explain her dilemma? He might provide some support for her. ;-)

I think this where Jack will add some valuable perspective, making Bernice even more enamored. At least I hope.

Geez, he’s hard to look at. Is he wearing a corset? It’s like he came from a completely different planet from the one the main characters live on.

Can he help unentangle herself from her reticence in seeing her brother, while at the same time entangling her in him? Time, or this arc will tell.
