What a cliffhanger to end the week upon! And I can’t believe how unaffected Luann is by Piro’s Bernice comment! We better not be off somewhere else come Monday!
This is going to be an awkward conversation! Since Greg has long avoided writing actual awkward situations, will Monday’s strip feature Piro telling Bernice about his story or will we pivot to something mundane? History says pivot to mundane but if Karen has taken complete control of the writing we might see Bernice blowing up long-distance.
AWESOME! Piro’s tragic and personal story that Mrs Horner found good enough to choose is his story with Bernice!? Maybe it’s a tragic love story that tells why he had to leave without seeing her after giving her a kiss. Luann immediately understands how important this is and decides that the two absolutely need to talk. Even if she likes Piro, his happiness is more important to her and she’s happy to help her friends. I hope he can talk to her and that Bernice will listen to him. That she will be in the audience while he reads, to the great embarrassment of both perhaps, but she needs to see him. This is really a great story.
I always hate it when people I’m talking to hand the phone to someone else and say, “Here. Talk to (insert name here)” with no warning. And it’s usually someone I really don’t feel like talking to.
The fellows in this comic have in several instances now…. fallen for Bernice. And, truthfully, I can understand why.
Regardless of what all the anti-Bernice crowd says, Bernice is attractive physically, emotionally, and mentally to a lot of guys. I know she would have been the type of girl I would have been drawn to (hah, pun…. not intended) at that age.
Just like a lot of young people her age (hell, I would say nearly all her age), Bernice is “trying on” a lot of different “hats” as she figures out who she wants to be. She is not perfect at it… sometimes she is a bit uptight, sometimes she is portraying “knowing it all” when in fact even she knows she doesn’t, and on and on.
But…. at her CORE, she is a kind, careful, thoughtful young girl who WANTS to do good in life for herself AND for OTHERS. And she is leaning and trying to figure out HOW to be that.
THAT is attractive. That is why I think Nil finds her his muse…. and why now we find that she was a muse for Piro too.
what exactly is a surprise to many commenters here? Unexpected development? really? It’s exactly what one would have expected reading the past few weeks of strips. :-/
The most shocking thing about this comic is that Luann would make a phone call right before she is going onstage! Who does that? Of course the phone call will be interrupted and she will not be prepared to read in front of the audience. Really dumb thing to do.
Piro seems to bring out really good traits in Luann. Supportive, helpful, caring. No jealousy or issue with him possibly connecting with Bernice again.
On the other hand, I can’t stand the thought of Bernice being Piro’s muse. There will be no living with the girl if she finds out she has inspired not only an artist but now a writer LOL!
I don’t think Piro is romantically interested in Bernice. I think she had some effect on his thinking and life when she let him spend the night in her dorm and he wants to thank Bernice for that. Bernice inspired Piro in some way, but he doesn’t want to date her.
My only hope all this time is that Piro does a good job in his reading, that he summons the strength to stand up in front of the audience and read his story. If he can just lock his eyes on someone he knows (sitting out there) that might work. Luann is reading first so she could then go out and sit in the front row or maybe now it will be Bernice who gives him that final bit of confidence.
I am trying to interpret Piro’s expression in the last panel. The corners of his mouth are going down. Does he see Bernice on Luann’s phone? is she at Nil’s booth wearing that ‘over-the-top’ bohemian muse outfit w/ hat?
Such good writing, drawing, story-telling, involving our name character and the mysterious Walt/Piro with a PATENTED MISDIRECTION PLAY! I spent a careful few minutes yesterday constructing my projection that this all portends a passionate revealing love affair, for Lu and W/P, given that Bern put herself out of connection to W/P, but this development puts them, as a couple back in play. The hilarious ramifications of this arc became suddenly even more interesting. But remember there is Bets, Gunther, and the Irma/Al issue, including Tiffany, and at least one or two other fraught issues, waiting to be resolved. Buckle up!
The Count and our Dearest Ann❤️Eiffel were plotting, I mean, talking and agree… what’s with the blasé blasé attitude between Luann and Pedro when just a couple of Sundays ago they were bumping uglies. And The Count lost so much… affection for Luann after that. Now it is like that Sunday comic (?) didn’t happen. The only person The Count knows who ❤️s (as a figure of speech) ’em and leave ’em like that is Ann❤️Eiffel and she leave ’em taking a lot more than their ❤️.

You raise up your head And you ask, “Is this where it is?”
And somebody points to you and says “It’s his”
And you say, “What’s mine?” And somebody else says, “Where what is?”
And you say, “Oh my God Am I here all alone?”

Okay, no need to panic.
There is no reason to think that Walt will actually mention Bernice’s name when he reads his story about her.
And if that’s the case, then only people at the fair who’ll know the story is about Bernice will be Walt.
And Luann.
And Bernice, certainly.
And Tiffany, maybe. But she won’t care because she’ll be too busy trying to spirit Kippie away from Steffie.
So, it’s all good.
But real winner will be Nil.
Walt’s about to do him a big, BIG, favor……….., ;-)
