The really, really weird part is that there is no such thing as color. It’s all in the mind. Different colors are just different wavelengths of grey.

One of the perks of fatherhood; telling your kid really far out things, and convincing them that it’s true.

Calvin’s dad is really on a roll. He explains extremely complicated things simply enough for Calvin to understand. I’m not a father but I greatly admire his ability to simplify a complex world.

Dad ought to be ashamed of himself! This proves how lacking he is in the “character” he’s been trying to build in Calvin! I hope Mom clobbers him with her dishpan hands!

In our house the world didn’t change to color until the 1960s when we go color TV.

I’m one of the people who dream in color, and I like it.

But there was a time when every picture was in black and white. Can we imagine how frustrating that was?!

Two strip technicolor debuted during the silent film era. The process used two complimentary colors instead of the three color, three strip process of the 30’s, so the projected images had a limited color palette. In addition, some early silent films were tinted to indicate darkness, for example. “The Phantom of the Opera” has tinted scenes. Some folks may recall a similar tinting effect during one of the scenes of “South Pacific,” which was a brilliant red.

All answers we needed were looked up in the Ecyclopedia Britannica of which the family has 2 sets. I can’t remember how old the first one was. But, the newer one was from the 60’s. Pretty outdated by the time I looked up Dinosaurs and the like.

Hobbs has a wonderful coping practice

I know there are dirty dishes that have to be washed, and I know Calvin’s mom is doing them all by herself (not sure why they don’t have an automatic dishwasher), and I know she is irritated because she feels she’s taken for granted ………. but ………….

Sharing a beautiful sunset with someone may indeed create a memory that will last forever. After the breather from chore and after the sun sets, she can go back to the dishes that have patiently been waiting for her and resume being annoyed while washing them…but who knows, maybe she’ll be in a slightly better mood?

No need to count to 10, just make him clean up the kitchen now.

What was odd was that the people and places shown on tv didn’t turn into color until the 1960s.

I was just thinking of how Dad doesn’t help with household chores, like at the start of the strip. And then he tells Calvin this nonsense. And then he wonders why his son is the way he is.

Why is his dad messing with Calvin’s head?

No wonder Calvin gets bad grades! I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dad did just as poorly as Calvin when he was in first grade.

I made up a parody of this where the Dad tells (sort of) the truth, that people actually preferred black-and-white photos over color back in the olden days, and some people today are still nostalgic for it.

No wonder some kids grow up to believe in conspiracy theories and bleach as a cure for COVID.

How does that explain the 1925 version of Ben Hur, where only those scenes involving Jesus are two colour Technicolor and the rest B & W? The Wizard of Oz I can understand having driven through Kansas when younger.

Love that line, especially coming from Watterson. I suspect that after most of today’s trendy “great artists” are forgotten, some of Watterson’s strips will live on as examples of true art from the late 20th century…

When we see Dad in the office setting, I didn’t know it was a government office.
