It would’ve been easier to blame Trump. (I apologize in advance for opening that can of worms here.) So how about that “Beauty and the Beast” movie? Isn’t it great?
Wow, so the cheapskate Degroots really did stick their minimum wage employee with the entire check. And dividing the total amount by 5 people equals $60 per person. Good lord, Frank is a piece of work. And before anyone rushes to defend these guys, remember that Les may be a thief, but none of them know that. As far as they’re concerned, they just ate their way through more than a week of Les’s total pay. And Pru looks like even more of a scumbag for inviting them without even telling (much less ASKING) Les first.
Seriously, though, Les manages to be both a thief and a sucker. Why did he agree to pay for the DeGroots’ dinner at the restaurant? He didn’t invite them, and they treated it as a business dinner for the business which Frank and Nancy own and where Les is presumably one of the lowest-paid employees. If my boss invited himself to dinner with me, it wouldn’t be on my dime. Les could have honestly told Frank and Nancy that he wasn’t expecting them to come to the dinner when he set it up, and he couldn’t afford to pay for their meals.
Boy this is a weird comment board this morning. First, the strip is in Spanish. I figure that is just probably a snafu somewhere in transmission. Hopefully it will resolve itself tomorrow, or maybe later they will put the English version up in GoComics. Then I have had to flag another commentator several times. That person must be incapacitated in some way. But to get to the arc, we may be coming to a head with Les’s story, on several levels. His uncle is confronting him on the expenditures, including the money given to Pru (did not mention the necklace) for the theater, the expensive “planning” dinner, that Les originally thought was a date, although Pru did not, and a third expenditure I don’t want to go back to ArcaMax to recall. Uncle Gray also asks Les about some money, a payment, he missed sending to Les’s mother, and to all the questions Les answers in a snide, dismissive, and disrespectful way. Where this will lead one can only surmise, but hopefully it will tie some things up on the Les situation. What are those payments to mom? I think they are payments paid in connection with probation, perhaps with something done with mom, who is probably Mr. Gray’s sister, or she is paying for damage of some kind that Les did.
Translate: U: Les, you still giving money to Pru for the theater?L: Hey, lets talk about how expensive theater supplies are.U: I see. I also hear that you spent $ 300 in an elegant restaurantL: It was the fault of the Degroots to go too, talk to themU: Aha. Well, your mom called. You did not pay again. Who do I talk to about that?L: With the post office. They’re out of stamps…
Don’t blame the Russians for this one. I think that the Mexicans want their Pedro (Piro) back. Maybe it’s a pre-emptive strike on April Fools’ Day? Well, amigos, is it okay now to talk about Tiffany’s chi chi’s ? Probably not.
Mr. Gray had mentioned to Les before that the probation officer was expecting payments. Apparently, Les isn’t making them. Non-answers may deflect others, but I don’t think Mr. Gray will take them.
Guess we will have to wait her 2-3 weeks to find out if Dr Heald is a Podiatrist,( but then it would be spelled Heeld ) a psychiatrist or what. A podiatrist would be good for Bernice as often suffers from “open mouth insert foot” disease. A Psychiatrist would also be good for her since she is such a head case.
Perhaps the Spanish is part of the plot. Mr Gray wants to talk about things in a way they won’t be easily eavesdropped. Like about that hot TV ring he’s got organized… “Leslie…I am Piro’s father!!!” Well, okay, maybe not…
If you will recall from christmas time or before, they held a fundraiser at the theatre, Les was in charge of the collection jar. At the end of the night he turned over like $35.00 or something…..
Try another source to see Luann for 3/20 like I did. Then come back and comment. The reasonable conclusion is that this was a one-time mistake I hope. The racist comments are definitely not appreciated and are so sad; this country has so many people who can’t even keep hate out of a comic strip comment blog.
So, due to some sort of mistake, GoComics has accidentally substituted the “Luann in Spanish” comic for the regular comic. My Spanish is not strong enough to get more than just a hint of what is going on, so I am taking some of the translator’s comments as “fact” at the moment. Hopefully, GoComics will correct their error fairly soon.
.
Although it will be interesting to see Mr. Gray and Les interact, I am a bit disappointed in not having more Piro & Bernice. I find that interaction/relationship to be very interesting and well done, and I wish Greg would make up a longer arc with those two.
.
But, I am sure, once this is back in English, this Grey/Leslie arc will be very interesting too.
I don’t know Spanish either, but thanks to those who provided links or translations. Leslie should blow off his uncle. He’s already in pretty deep in his current circumstances, and we’ve figured out here before he must be paying restitution of some sort for a previous transgression. Uncle/Mr Gray isn’t going to tolerate Les’ explanations.
The gist of the story for those, like me, who are seeing it in Spanish. Someone that speaks Spanish better than I do can probably give you a better translation but this is the general idea.G: You keep giving money to Pru for that theater things.L: Talk to the theater supply company. It’s expensive.G: I also heard you spent $300 on an expensive dinner.L: Talk to the Degroots. It’s their fault.G: Well, I also heard you didn’t send your mom any money. What about that?L: It’s the post office’s fault.
After making my comment about the strip not being in English I go back to my page to finish reading and it IS in English! Thanks to whoever fixed the problem before they could possibly have read my complaint post!
Thank you, GoComics, for fixing the mistake of posting the Spanish version in the English version of Luann. It is appreciated.

So, the BIG question to me is…. what sort of “payment” does Les have to make to his mother? There are so many possibilities……. a) repayment of money he “borrowed” from her and Uncle Grey found out about, b) repayment of bail money, c) some other “nefarious” deed he did that requires him to repay his mother, or d) might he be potentially being “guided” by Uncle Grey to do something nice for his mother in a way to “train” Les to be nicer? “D” is probably unlikely, but it would be interesting if that was how Uncle Grey decided to guide Les.
I do think it’s super weird that Les paid for the entire dinner. Personally, I don’t expect a guy to pay for me on a date, but it is a tradition so if Pru had gone alone and believed it was a date, it wouldn’t have been unreasonable for him to pay. MAYBE if he invited me to talk business at Starbucks and offered to pay for everyone’s basic coffees (you’re on your own for lattes).
Usually, the court systems do NOT take kindly at all to those who start defaulting on payment of fines, etc. – so Les had better be careful! Maybe there was an underlying reason for the Spanish version earlier … After all, speaking of ‘courts’: “NO one suspects the Spanish Inquisition!!!”

And finally, if you don’t like something I am saying, feel free to scroll past it, as I will forever now scroll past the posting of the entity that attacked me today. But I do not think anyone other than that entity has accused me of having ‘typical and annoying fits’. I am not hurt, because to be hurt, I would have to care what that entity said. I’m not sure what’s going on with Leslie’s payments to Mom, but we are getting enough exposition of how the surly Bad Seed splurges with his ill-gotten (stolen) gains….
