I did not start reading this until several years in. I still get mixed up on who goes where. It is one of my favorites. My local paper does not carry the Sunday ’toon. I really appreciate gocomics.
As someone who is married to (a now retired) nurse, I have always had the suspicion that Robb is married to one, too. I have been reading it at least since 1999 when we moved to our present location. A really pleasant and entertaining comic to read. Well, except when Mortimer is attacking Sock Ness…
Robb- Congratulations. Yours is one of my favorite strips. You do a wonderful job with your storylines (and your art too, of course). I hope you have another 30 years to your run!
I used to read this in the Toronto Sun back in the 90s and started reading it again a couple of years ago here when I realized Jumpstart was same comic and I just forgot the name (because I had to skim the paper fast before work back then) and was amazed by how many characters there are now. Congratz Robb.
Hey, Robb, you and I were at Syracuse at the same time. I was a photog when you were art director of the Daily Orange. I’ll always fondly remember your college strip, “Hector.” Congratulations and thanks for 30 great years of Jump Start!
Thanks for introducing yourself to us fans! Jumpstart is a REALLY creative comic and it’s brilliant in depicting black people and white people as PEOPLE, not sterotypes—and is very entertaining. It’s a gift. May you create it for many years to come!
Rob, throughly enjoyed your strips for years. The only nit I have to pick is since the strip is about Philly cops, why do you call them precincts instead of districts.
Glad you persisted, Robb!!. Been reading Jump Start since the Minneapolis Star-Tribune (formerly 2 papers, the morning Tribune and afternoon Star) started carrying it, and here since 2011. I’m reading the archive as well, currently on 1997 and 2007.
My husband was born and raised in Philly (Roxborough) and we visited often while his parents were alive. I LOVE Philly! Thank you for bringing back memories of “home” every day!
By the way, our daughter lived there for 4 years and worked at the SPCA In Norristown. We adopted two kittens she rescued, Philly (Phildelphia) and Penny (Pennsylvania). Sounds like that’s where they found Mortimer!
Love your strip, Mr.Armstrong. I have been reading it since day one and now,it’s 30?! Wow, how time flies. As a fellow cartoonist, you inspire me, thank you. Congrats on your 30th!
Thank you, Robb Armstrong, for your creation. The extended Cobb/Glover families, as well as their friends and associates, make for a warm circle of people that I wish I was a part of.
Lol, you’d think they’d recognize him after all they’ve been through. I loved this Robb and I love Jumpstart so, so much. I’m actually trying to be a nurse just like Marcy so reading about her character, and her experiences in the hospital really did inspire me. Happy 30th-anniversary Jumpstart!!! Here’s for more strips to come :)
Robb Armstrong, there are many comic strips I’ve read regularly that I have enjoyed. But you have created a family of people whom I consider to be my friends. Granted, they are fictional, but they strike me as people I would like to know personally.
I can not claim to know when I first started reading your strip, but my favorite arc is still when Joe was tasked with the Duty of getting Sunny ready for Daycare.
And Sunny was thinking, “I love it when Dad takes me! No snaps, no zippers, just a slip-on jump suit” (or something to that effect)
Then it’s time to do her hair — and Joe shouts, “MAYDAY! MAYDAY!”
And the great thing about it is, my daughter was about the same age, and had about the same hair issues! So I could really, really relate.
Today, not being fortunate enough to live in “Cartoon Time”, she’s 30 years old.
Congrats on 30-years, Robb! I think I’ve been reading since the beginning, though in the mid-90s I took a break to do Navy stuff. Sorry, it was impossible to get newspapers when you’re sailing around in boxes in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
