Well, Tara has a point – Luann’s assignment is to assist Zebo, not confront students who are having a giggle over their haughty and obtrusive professor…
Maybe Tara knows “Deep Essence” better than Luann – but she’s forgotten what a “Friend” is. I hope this very bright young woman finds her way to an apology.
In the middle panel, Tara looks like she’s morphing into something else. She is probably an alien and experienced a momentary phase shift in her appearance transmorgrification oscillator. Close call there, Tara…
If the issue here is Tara being a disruption, isn’t Luann being more disruptive right now by overhearing a passing comment and turning it into a whole (rather loud and lengthy) discussion right in the middle of class? Tara and Nil’s jokes didn’t affect Zebo at all (in other words, nobody was being bothered by it), yet now Luann is actively preventing Tara from doing her classroom work. Maybe she should “assist the teacher” by sorting paintbrushes again, and save the chewing-out time for after class.
This panel makes me wish I could see Luann animated with voices. It is fun imagining who might voice whom, and in this case I would love to hear the voice for Tara, particularly in the second panel. Her imitation of Prof. Zebo has to be spot on! Luann is a TA who doe not know a basic element of art, how to make the banal seem ethereal. All I can think of are still life’s of the French Impressionist at Chicago’s Art Institute for example. Amazing how a bow of fruit drawn by a master can draw one in. Anyway I still don’t quite see where this is going, so I will wait.
Gotta agree that Zebo’s assignment instruction is quite a head scratcher. Or a chin caress. Quite an eccentric professor. Usually the larger post secondary institutions have those so what’s Zebo doing at a cc? He’d be making more money than where he is at. And hire better assistants than Luann. And Tara? You’re such a loser.
I have serious doubts about Tara. Remember, she was introduced as the dorm thief who stole the community TV and broke into/destroyed a vending machine.
Actually, this is a good learning experience for Luann. Having to deal with Young adults like Tara and Nil who mock and ridicule what they don’t understand. Although I suspect THOSE two DO understand, and are just giving Luann a hard time like they did “Howie” in that other class.
Today is just a “bump in the road,” Lu. Hey. Just tell them that what they see, is subject to their own interpretation. And to Draw, THAT…….,
I’m sorry Luann but Tara is right here. I can understand wanting to keep the class focused and quiet. But be angry even for a whispered joke is too much. I guess Zebo is watching everything silently to see how his assistant will do in a situation like this.
None of those words were difficult for me to understand, nor does their meaning in his context allude me. You’re in college Tara, you’re expected to have at least a 8th grade reading comprehension level.
“Banality of Perceived Reality” well let’s see… “Banal” means ordinary in an almost derogatory sense and your perceptions are your senses, so you’re looking at something very ordinary (as most still lifes are) and assessing it using your eyes, maybe adding a few things from other senses (like direction of light, perception of wind or motion etc)
“Uniqueness of it’s deep essence” What do you see? What sticks out to you? Do you feel the light needs to be altered, do you want to express it in perhaps a different state or reimagine what the items look like… what strikes your mood? Think about what you see and feel something… your perceptions are yours alone, maybe you see yellows a little more greenish… maybe you imagine deep waves of light eminating from the fruit, now put that onto the canvas.
in short, rather than taking “art” in college because you thought it was easy in grade school, realize that you’re there to learn something, a little bit history, a lot of theory and maybe some applications of such theory.
signed The husband of someone who taught art at the college level.
She should have just left this one alone. They weren’t even talking to HER! Sometimes it’s better not to engage at all. But if she felt she just HAD to speak up she should have had a game plan. Tara is asking some good questions. Luann should have been prepared with an answer that would shut both Tara and Nil down and get them back to work. Both Tara and Nil seem like talented art students. Just get them back on track doing the assignment! Students, especially college students, make off the cuff remarks like this all the time. Unless they are disrupting the entire class let it go.
There’s always been truth in the saying people fear what they don’t know and mock what they don’t understand. Then there’s taking advantage of a choice opportunity to say something funny.
Is Luann going to morph into becoming “Zebo Lite”? the scarf and her defense of him seem to be harbingers… I don’t think she could pull off the shaven head look very well, though.
Interesting…. but a bit surprising on a few levels:
1. Luann, IMO, is being too confrontational. She seems to be over reacting to Tara’s little snide aside. It is just a comment. I think Luann could have gotten the point across in a more accessible fashion by joshing back at Tara some sort of comment that simply suggested Tara’s little comment was not “cool”.
2. Tara, IMO, is being too harsh as well to Luann….. the “stop bothering the students” comment and facial expression in that panel suggest she is quickly getting irate at Luann. For me, that is a bit over-the-top for how Tara should respond. It would have been better for Tara to think a bit first before responding, and then perhaps to say something akin to “Ah, I guess it wasn’t the best thing to say, but it was just a joke.”
To me, this feels like this week may end up being a focus on Luann and Tara escalating into a true argument with each other. If this is the case, what will it reveal… and how will we see each of the two characters differently?
Will Luann channel her inner Bernice and go all authoritarian on Tara and Nil? Will she break up in laughter at Tara’s imitation of Zébo? Will she dip into her well of artistic unconscious and explain to the world that the “banality of perceived reality” means “take a selfie?”
The teacher should be the one to ask to clarify the project. It’s his assignment. Many art students draw still life components as they think they should look- banal and preconceived . Each apple, pear, bottle, etc. is unique with it’s flaws, lights and shadows -uniqueness of essence. They don’t really study what they’re drawing. Luann is stuck in the middle. Tara is a bit testy.
2) The REAL reasons Nil and Tara took this class in the first place. And they ain’t here to “learn.” (And note that they are taking the class again) https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2019/08/29?ct=v&cti=1289172
3) And then, there’s THIS: https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2019/10/06?ct=v&cti=1289172
But what I’m seeing so far is pretty much I thought was going to happen. Bernice, “just doing her job,” gets praised.
First lesson in life if you’re the supervisor you can’t be their friend. I realize she’s technically not the supervisor but I think most of you get the point.
Tara has a point. Luann is a TA not a ‘policeman’; she should be able to answer questions and help students understand what they are doing. If she wants to teach at the college level, as she told Zebo, she needs to at least understand the subject matter.
Seems like one should be able to get what Zebo is saying. Banal means common place. A butternut squash and a wine bottle are common place items. Zebo is just asking students to see something special and unique in the pairing of these two ordinary objects and to translate that perception into their drawings. After thinking a bit, Luann could say something like that.
This is hilarity ensues today, I am not sure it is meant to make a huge point, but I do have a challenge: Airman already did it yesterday, good choices. If you could think of actors who could do the voices for these characters, or generally in Luannverse if the comic had an animated version (Greg)? who would you suggest? I will do mine later when I have time to think about it, but Angelina Jolie in her Malificent character for Awful Ann.

There are several things We need to remember, moving forward with this Arc:
1) Panel 2, Bernice’s “Prediction:” https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2019/08/27?ct=v&cti=1289172
Luann, “just doing her job,” gets trashed.
