After Bets-Gunther and Nil-Bernice a week of random violence and Shannon comes as a rain amidst a forest fire. But what is this hint that Luann is a lonely person in need of a date? Ominous cello notes sound. Danger (or stupidity) is afoot.
I am sorry you have no life, Luann. By the comments posted about Luann, I believe most readers agree. Luann’s character hasn’t progressed much since highschool, and many of us would like to see it happen.
Last week (Or was it the week before?) I half-joked to someone here that Shannon would be featured in the next arc, never dreaming it would Actually happen.
To whomever I said that to, please accept My most sincere and heartfelt apology.
I believe I also said something to the effect that Luann now has a clear path to Mr. Jack.
That being said, and throwing caution to the winds, how soon will it be before “Unca Jack,” one of Lu’s “failed” Date-Pic-Dates, or some brand new ‘Moe’ makes an appearance this week? :)
Love how Toni’s date clothes, match Luann’s staying home and babysitting clothes. J/k . But I didn’t know Shanon was still in contact with her father! Could be interesting? We haven’t seen him in a…decade?
So why did Brad and Toni volunteer to watch Shannon in the first place if they were gonna go on a date? And why ask Luann for help instead of giving her back to Jonah?
Oh yeah: because they’re essentially her parents now. And god forbid they ever get a storyarc that doesn’t revolve around her. But it was nice of Evans to let us know that this is just a filler arc, since Shannon-based arcs never feature any character development or even any real continuity (since in the real world or even slightly logical storytelling, children’s actions build upon each other, i.e. they can’t keep getting away with misbehaving the exact same way for long before some adult has had enough. But in the Luanniverse the kid just gets to keep doing whatever she wants and nobody says a thing, and no lessons get learned by anyone.) But since I’m an eternal optimist, maybe a Shannon arc is finally due to rise above the same old mediocrity (though given how we just saw the end of the last arc crash and burn, I have my doubts.)
This answers the question that a new arc was going to start Monday. Shannon, as a typical young child states the obvious, her dad doesn’t date and she thinks is lonely, but then she points to Luann. It’s almost a tautology as Luann said essentially the same thing in panel one. I hope this isn’t a setup where Shannon’s dad and Luann somehow hook up, that would seem to be a Bonfire of the life clueless. Doubt that, but this ought to satisfy those of us who want to see Luann’s story progress. Romance, maybe, is in the air.
Shannon is mentioning her dad and Luann in the same sentence, describing them as two lonely single people, and saying they are the type of people who should date. PUHLEEZE, G & K, DON’T put those two together! That would be a calamity of the first order.
Good job, Shannon. Spotlight Luann on the fact her life is uneventful and in a need of something to occupy her time. Maybe you can play a little matchmaker, Shannon? You forgot Uncle TJ is single also.
Yes. Shannon’s dad + Luanne. But we don’t really know anything about him. Other than he’s in theater and so is/was Luann. But should Luann get involved with a divorcé?
Wow, Shannon looks mad! You shouldn’t have told her you’re going on a date. You should’ve told her you’re going for ice cream and aren’t bringing any back for her.
Looks like the start of an arc were Shannon will question Luann’s love life forcing her to talk about it… YEEEEEEESS!!!!!!! Luann just said she has no life and she’s still hurt for having seen how Bernice don’t wants to talk with her. With Shannon’s “help”, Luann may be able to deal with her inner sadness and process it. Go, little Shannon ♡!
Speaking of Shannon’s Dad does he not want to see his daughter anymore and why doesn’t Toni put her foot down and tell her brother to be a father to his daughter?
At this point in the strip GnK have Luann poised for her turn in a romantic adventure. But with Shannon as provocateur what kind of adventure could she have? Gunther had Tiffany as catalyst and Bernice had Jack. And the title character has Shannon? Oh my!
“We agreed to watch my brother’s kid, even though it’s our date night, so let’s dump her on someone else. Wonder where her behavior problems come from?”
@Aladar30 You bring up an interesting point of view. Luann has been relegated to talking about other characters’ love lives since the Gulag introduction and near kiss with Gunther. Bern & Nil, Bern & Jack, Gunnie & Bets… EVEN Her own folks, Frank & Nancy!!! (https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2021/04/07)
Last time we thought a link up with Jack could occur was back in January, the 4th, 5th and 6th. Then this happened! https://www.gocomics.com/luann/2021/02/14
Maybe Luann will have a self reflection about her lack of romance with Shannon’s inquisitiveness as an impetus.
To those expecting Jack to show up and restart that romantic interest; Jack has been such a chameleon of a character lately. It’s hard to figure how he’d play in this scenario without a major character shift out of his major self interest.
To those suspecting a lead in to Jonah Daytona. He is such a flawed character to eliminate him. Any remodeling of him top be a suitable suitor for Luann would necessitate his seeking more contact with Shannon, thus messing up Shannon’s role as a substitute child for Brad and Toni. That relationship is too fertile plotwise for GnK to want to mess up.
Dang, I was hoping that Shannon had been permanently relegated to the Sunday strips. Oh well, gives me something to complain about, so it’s not all bad!
So much information! So Brad and Shannon seem to have full custody of Shannon; Shannon is aware her father is dating, and now everyone is aware that Luann has hit a dry spell, romantically.
This is probably a minority opinion but I’m actually a little tired of dating arcs. It would be a nice misdirect if Luann actually discovered something (as opposed to someone) she was passionate about and we got to see some arcs about whatever that is.
I’m glad to see the most annoying character is not in the strip today. Luann could date if she wanted to. I’m sure many young men would like to go out with her.
Its always nice to see Brad and Toni. In some ways I do feel sorry for Shannon. Everyone is always just pawning her off on someone. Jonah drops her off with Toni, now Toni is dropping her off on Luann. Does Shannon have any stability in her life?
First I’ve heard that Shannon’s swingin’ dad is “lonely”. Well, true, it’s conventional wisdom that guys who have sex with lots of different people are basically “lonely”, but for all that it sounds like a pretty good gig.
It would have been funnier to end the first panel with “I have no life”, have an awkward silence in the second, and finish with Toni and Brad saying “whelp, g’night!” in the third…
Luann needs to choose words carefully around Shannon. Poking fun at her own social life and using the d word she brings this onto herself. But is this going to be a 1 week interlude involving Luann and Shannon or is it a lead-in to a multi week arc with greater depth? Unfortunately whenever Shannon is featured there’s not much depth.
I am hopeful that Shannon will finally start speaking more in line with her age. Also, she is surprisingly perceptive. I’m glad to see Brad and Toni, even if that does mean Shannon as well. So, let us see where this all goes…
