They never solved the mystery as to why country star Dolly Parton and rapper Jay-Z are in the ROCK & ROLL hall of fame but ultra-famous rock bands like Bad Company and Blue Oyster Cult are not (???).
Meanwhile, across town, at the Folkies Cold Case Unit, they’re still working on where all the flowers went to, and how many roads a man must walk down.
She always repeats the title of the requested song before she plays it; so my son thought I had broken his new Alexa when he entered the room to hear “Um um um um um um.”
As others have posted, it is a direct quote from the song.
Also, I always heard it has “bop” not “bomp”. That style of music was known as “she-bop”, as in “bop-she-bop”, before the term was co-opted by Cyndi Lauper and other female musicians.
Deep in their archives they solved the mystery that “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” was originally written and recorded by the Weavers in the mid 50’s. Sounded nothing like the popular cover that came out in the 60’s.
In about 1965 I was in my car listening to a top 40 station. When “Who Wrote the Book of Love?,” the oldie of the hour ended, the disk jockey said, “If you want to know, it was a guy named Ovid.” Jim Washburn was his name, KYA in San Francisco. There may be a Bay Area tradition. Dave Flemming, the number two announcer on Giants radio broadcasts was a classics major at Stanford. I’ve never heard him quote anything though.
I’m much too young to know this—but my work plays 50s and 60s on the satellite radio, so I know that the singer would like to shake his hand, because that song made his baby fall in love with him.
