Elvis has a different take on the peep toads. We sold our cabin, with a pond surrounded by peepers, and I miss it.

Pucky is like me, I love to listen to the ‘toadie-frogs’ as we called them when the girls were little. Elvis is just such a curmudgeon. Gotta love him. We had tornado warnings last night, sirens and all and boy howdie did it rain and hail! Can’t wait to see the lightning bug light show tonight!

I have a friend like Elvis.

I personally, love waking up to the birds, early in the morning. I LOVE the peep toads of July. Lightening bugs, crickets. – any sound of nature immediately relaxes me.

My friend, is an accountant from Toronto, who moved to the country.

Her husband told me that when they first moved in, she was up every morning at 5AM, swatting at the birds singing outside her window with a broom, screaming “Shut up! Stupid F*&$#ing birds! SHUT UP!”

    I don’t think she “gets” country life…..

No Tommy, but panel 2 is one of my favorite images of Puck. It is a wonderful thing on warm nights to go outside, stand still, and listen to nature.

I would find the constant horns, car doors slamming, alarms, and hubbub of city life annoying; it is all in how we are raised.

If you want to experience absolute quiet outside, stand in the woods during a snowfall. The snow absorbs all sound, even road traffic gets muffled.

As performed by Louis Armstrong: What a Wonderful World

    I hear peep toads sing

    And cat friends sing, too

    They share the joy

    With me and mew

    And I think to myself

    What a Wonderful World

    …….

    I see Christmas Tree bugs

    They shine like the stars

    I think of friends

    Both near and far

    And I think to myself

    What a Wonderful World

    …….

(Elvis) The song of the peep toads

    Is much to loud

    But I understand

    They are all allowed

I know my friends are all here

Through the spring and the fall

    And I must admit

    I love them all!

    …….

    I see Tommy smile

    I see Beatrix shine

    I know everything

    Will turn out fine

    And together we will make

    This a Wonderful World

    Yes, together we will make

    This a Wonderful World

    Oh, yeah!

It’s rather like how cicadas are “charming” for the first five minutes, then you realize they are the sound-track for one of the inner circles of the Inferno, but … eventually … you get used to it.

Way back when, in the 1980s, a friend of mine invited a fellow music student (who was a slick Wall Street partner-wannabe) to a weekend at his Pennsylvania cabin. Well…Mr. Manhattan finally turned up Friday night (early Saturday) around 2AM, wearing a three-piece suit, and asked “What’s that deafeningly loud ratchety sound?” When told, “It’s just little tree frogs rubbing their hind legs together”, Mr. Manhattan hopped back into his BMW convertible, speeded back out that dirt road, and was never heard from again.

If anyone was thinking about buying something soon from Georgia’s Zazzle shop, everything is 25% off for the next 12 hours or so.

(“I’ve already spent a lot for this month and I don’t need any more mugs.” I will try to keep repeating this to myself . . . for the next 12 hours or so.)

I’ve mentioned before that I reread my journals in 5 year increments. There is usually some sort of synchronicity to them. I wrote the following on this date in 2002:

“As I was putting the lawn mower away, I saw a teeny tiny toad in the loose dirt that the chipmunk has scratched out of the drain holes in the retaining walls. It’s about the size of the tip of my thumb. It had the right number of legs in all the right places. I picked it up, and it peed all over my thumb, but that was quite ok with me. I love toads! I’m going to have to be careful when I go back and forth through there that I don’t accidentally harm it. I asked the guardian angel of critters to keep it safe from snakes and birds. I hope it grows up to be a wise old toad!”

I have seen many toads in that general area over the years. One fall I was digging in my flower bed to plant daffodil bulbs. I accidentally dug up a hibernating toad. It blinked the dirt off its face, then started wiggling its whole body causing it to sink back down into the loose earth. I gently filled in the hole I’d started and found another spot for the daffodil bulbs. The fact that I managed to dig up the toad without harming it let me know the guardian angel of toads was still on the job.
