He’s creatively making her do his homework. He hustled her by using her desire to help other against her. When and IF she figures this out, it’ll make her afraid to trust others again.
Can we please see Luann show a normal level of intelligence sometime? Why is she even a tutor if she’s such a dumb bunny as shown in this and the previous tutoring arc?
The tutoring gig is a wide open opportunity for Greg to get creative, to showcase Luann with a variety of characters with a wide variety of problems. It could be an academic revolving door.
GAH that first panel. And yes i’ve commented on Vale’s look all but one day this week but when the art keeps making me recoil more than some horror films have, you might have made a mistake in character design.
So what will the consequences be if Vale’s teacher suspects plagiarism? Does Luann lose this job or is Vale allowed to pull a gentleman’s C as he might be a crucial component for Pitt to win their district? Even then the tutoring center might chastise Luann for letting Tank Jr flagrantly cheat on his assignment.
OK, that’s it! Vale is a terrible guy with seems to have no positive qualities. A snake that takes advantage of those who want to help him. I hope Luann finds out and asks not to have to help him anymore and I hope those recordings don’t end up causing her troubles.
Go for it Luann . Your a tutor. You do not have to grade this assignment and it’s not your responsibility to help Veil grow emotionally via intrinsic motivation. Tell Veil you will do this assignment for him, and give him the questions he needs to ask his teacher next time to break the assignment down factually – past successful examples? Any artists off limits or preferred? What is the teacher looking for and evaluating on in this assignment? Can it be a visual diary or what format do you want? What percentage of the overall grade is this assignment? Luann sees homework assignments as “fun” regardless of grades/outcome. Not everyone will agree with her on that, so might as well learn to accommodate different objectives now rather then when some parent starts questioning the value of the assignment.
Since evil is never allowed to prosper (in the comcs) Vsle will be exposed but I wonder how. How he show his grade A report to Luaunn causing her to realize that he plagiarized her? He’s du,b but not that done. More likely, I think, is that the art instructor will visit Luann to praise her tutoring skills, shows her Lockjaw’s paper at which Luann is recognize her own works. And another victory for the Teach-a ss.
Wow, it’s not as stupid as it seems (in theory, because if you let someone else do your homework, you don’t learn anything and that makes you the loser in the end).
When Vint made his appearance earlier this week, some speculated whom he was akin to. I think a possible connection could be to the character “Strong Man” from the old Mighty Heroes cartoon of the 60’s. Grandfather/grandson connection even though it’s two different universes. Just a guess.
What this arc (and Luann) needs is for Jack to come in to visit. And recognize Vale as a member of the sports team. Then remember him as a manipulative meathead, always getting others to do his work for him. Luann would still be embarrassed at being tricked. But now she has a ‘white Knight’ to rescue her.
I hate that smile. Phony. Vale will make a great used car salesman someday. “Yeah a little old lady owned it, She just drove it to church on Sunday’s”.
Still time for a misdirection play. I know it’s drawn fhis way, for Luann to be brilliant cruelly being played for doofus, but I’m hoping for a future educator kind of save this time.
So sad, Luann is so needy for someone to listen to her, she’s giving away the homestead! … But I can relate - it’s so much easier to get people to look at my nature photos (or a quick comic strip!) than to actually read a paragraph! The latter takes, gosh I don’t know…? 10 seconds! The horror!
Any teacher who is awake should be able to pick up on the fact that that prose (or whatever you want to call the pretentious blather that Luann is spewing) didn’t come from THAT guy. To go back to the beginning of the arc: Does he look like someone who can write that stuff?
@ Robin Harwood— have you ever been a teacher? Actor? Or been in the helping professions (eg, counselor, psychotherapist)….? Or a Dad? There is something called Empathy — aka, walking a mile in another person’s shoes. This is what makes a good writer… Worth a Google search.
I can’t see this ending well for either of them. Luann may be accused of helping him cheat, especially if that recording is discovered with only her voice on it. =:-o
Have some pity for Luann. She’s only as smart as the author wants her to be, and right now he wants her to be stupid and oblivious to what Vale is doing. If she had caught on to his plan on the first day there wouldn’t be any more story. Which we would cheer but would be a dilemma to Greg. Luann’s first tutoree was a smart Asian girl who was taking high level math. Despite Luann’s lack of knowledge about that level of math the situation was played with humor and kindness. Since then Greg has given us Axel who was hitting on Luann and this jerk who expects her to do his homework. To make Luann’s tutoring stories work Greg needs to focus on situations where Luann is helpful to people who honestly need help and leave the scumbuckets alone.
I actually rather like Veil. He’s come to Luann with an assignment that is a real problem for him, and he is doing his best to find a way to get a good grade on the assignment despite having no interest in the subject. He has been upfront about all of that. I doubt he is going to major in art history, let alone work in it, so given it is kind of a throw away assignment that he doesn’t find fun in a class he doesn’t find useful, I am totally OK with his finding a workaround in Luann to get the grades he needs.
After this Luann will quickly become the most popular tutor at the high school and it won’t take long for them to figure out why. She is so self absorbed and egotistical that she welcomes any opportunity to show off, and stupid enough not to know when she’s being used. She never did figure out what Axel was all about. Bernice better start searching jobs for her again.
I’m not convinced that Vale will have any problem getting Luann’s quotes transcribed. He no doubt has friends or acquaintances who would successfully do the work for him, perhaps for a little cash, a favor, etc. We may never know, but I don’t think that getting the work onto paper is going to be an issue.
there’s a problem with Luann’s demeanor in the 2nd panel. She appears excited to be telling Vale about herself instead of working with him to improve his writing skills. It’s like she’s saying “…wow I’m so excited to be showing you my theater skills and this is me…etc.”. Luann the teacher is not there anymore.
I’m wondering if she is purposely feeding nonsense to this piece of crap. Since VanGogh was a prolific letter-writer, his manner of speech is well known. The art teacher should see Vale’s diary for the s#*t it is.
Luann is still a student. She is not an experienced teacher with 20 years of teaching and dealing with cheating kids under her belt. She still believes people are good, and I’m glad she does.

You know?
Luann had a fulfilling job teaching appreciative little kids.
But “thanks” to Tara, she lost it.
Now, she’s stuck teaching obnoxious, knuckle-dragging users.
Makes Me wish for two things:
1) That Cousin Stella would have backed up that night and finished the job on her cousin Tara.
And
2) That Old “Lock Jaw” here, finds out firsthand what “percussion protocol” is all about EVERY time he hits the gridiron this coming football season.
