She’s a bookstore cat! She’s probably read scarier stories than any of you have ever heard of.

    Still . . . be careful.

Just make sure the stories aren’t too spoopy!

Can we just comment on how brave Elvis is? Because he narrowly escaped Lupin taking a big ol’ chomp out of that paw, and he would have had only himself to blame.

O.T. – non-update on Floyd. His oh, so unreliable friend didn’t pick him up for his follow up appointment to get the test results of the tests they ran on the growths in his throat. (Floyd has to take buses, etc to get around) any way the new appointment was for this past Tuesday, but the hurricane hit so its going to be next Tuesday unless he goes to the emergency room tomorrow. He doesn’t have any insurance. Please keep him in your prayers and thoughts. Thank you.

Goldie has apparently been adopted by one of the jingle fish. And that old-fashioned blue enameled metal coffee pot (or kettle) with the white specks. I remember them from my youth when we went camping.

After the funeral, the cats who’d been doing most of the on-scene coverage took some pictures of the stairway where it happened. When the pictures were developed, there was their Woman, standing next to the attic steps, wearing the dress their Man had bought to bury her in.

I forgot they like to tell Spooky Stories by the space heater. Shout out to Elvis being adorable dad, worried his little girl who bravely risked her life during the Owl Saga would be too young for this. Never change Bud. Well maybe a little. If she gets married some day I don’t want him bringing a sack of quarters to whollop the groom.

It was pretty late at night for a kid to be out, but the little boy acted like he knew where he was going, so the kitten followed him. The boy went up the trail and about a mile down the dirt road, safely back to the family farmhouse where the Man, out checking on the livestock one last time before turning in for the night, spotted his daughter’s kitten and brought him inside. The Girl, watching from the window, waved to the little boy as he went off down the road. The next morning, when she told the family that a boy in a red shirt and overalls with a straw hat had brought her kitten home, the grandmother went very still and whispered “Eben, make her stop.” The Girl had given an exact description of her first son, who had died in a fall at the age of six, wearing the shirt and hat he had on when the Girl had seen him.

Note: I somehow posted this on August 22 by mistake. I think a lot of weirdness is going on. ANYWAY:This reminds me of the time when as a kid (I was a voracious reader) looking for something new, I discovered Horror. I had no idea what it was, and I must have been around 10 or 11 and I found a book at the library entitled “The Call of Cthulhu”. Didn’t know how to pronounce it, but it was strangely addicting until I started having nightmares and quit reading it. I couldn’t remember the author (H. P. Lovecraft) so I looked it up and guess what? There is a children’s book out for a couple of years now, advertised for “beginning readers” It is done in what the blurb calls anapestic tetrameter. I know, I didn’t either so I looked it up. Basically it made the story in to poetry with 4 lines (tetrameter) of “a foot of three syllables, two short followed by one long in quantitative meter, and two unstressed followed by one stressed in accentual meter, as in for the nonce.” Ok that was just gratuitous horror but the book has a green Seuss like monster on the front. Can you imagine. Nothing like letting all that horror getting stuck in your memory as poetry? The horror! And that is not all, there is “The Dagon” done in the same manner, and an alphabet book called “C is for Cthulhu” This a bit much for me. And yet… and yet… I feel a strong urge to look for this Seuss like book in the library….This long story brought to you by the folks who are prepping you for Halloween!

    Meanwhile, Back on the Nile

Elvis-Anum: Now that I’ve returned my library scrolls, I know what I must do.

    Beatrixia: What must you do?

    Elvis-Anum: Borrow some more.

Bea: The Feast of Candy is coming. I’d like to recommend this book: Stories to Tell Late at Night Around a Campfire With a Cup of Cat-Friendly Hot Chocolate

    Elvis: Ooh, sounds scary.

Bea: Yes, wonderfully so. My favorite is Don’t Ask for the Purple Jellybean. Here’s the story:

Once a kitty entered his favorite candy store. He asked the candy store cat for his favorite candy, jellybeans.

“Do you have all different colors?” The kitty asked.

The candy store cat replied, “Yes. You may have red jelly beans, green jelly beans, orange jelly beans, and yellow jelly beans. But you must never ask for a purple jelly bean.”

Sometime later the kitty went to the store to buy more jelly beans. The candy store cat told him, “You may have have red jelly beans, green jelly beans, orange jelly beans, and yellow jelly beans. But you must never ask for a purple jelly bean.”

And a third time the kitty went to buy jelly beans. The candy store cat told him, “You may have have red jelly beans, green jelly beans, orange jelly beans, and yellow jelly beans. But you must never ask for a purple jelly bean.”

The kitty said to the candy store cat, “I love all the different colors. But why must I never ask for purple jelly beans?”

The candy store cat replied, “Because we’re all out.”

Great news!!! In April we rescued the cutest orange tabby that had been on an apartment roof for 2 months. Owners would not allow anyone on the roof to rescue so we kept putting food and water out and worked to persuade her to come down. Anyway, we got her and she was in bad shape as her liter of kittens died in the womb. I just took her in for her final check up and she is now a very happy, healthy house cat!!! Last night she was in bed with our other 2 cats like she had been with us all along.

Good morning, Orbsters, and greetings from Noah’s Ark … I mean, Raleigh, NC. The rain started in earnest here overnight but, thus far, nothing to differentiate from any other rain storm. The wind is slated to arrive over the next 12-24 hours, though. My brother, who lives in Jacksonville, FL, fared quite well.

The main challenge for us today will be the fact that school was canceled for The Girl, and we’ve become accustomed to doing our work without constant interruption.

This one feels…off. Beatrix has never before talked like a baby. She’s always been a kitten, but a very mature one. Remember how she was as the station’s intern? Busy, organized—all that. Georgia, has our Beatrix been influenced by her namesake?

Once upon time … there was a warm, lazy cat who got so enormous from eating junk … and the next day, all they found was the hook of a claw sheath in the switch of the space heater, which had been dead for twenty years!

Never got into horror, though once in Florida I managed to scare a bunch of college kids with a story about the “walking trees” —mangroves. Shortly after I finished the story, we heard a tremendous racket coming from the palmetto brush around the camp site. I said something like, “Well, here they are …” and one person actually freaked out. Then the armadillo walked out of the brush and into the clearing. Lots of laughter, some of it slightly hysterical.
