Luann should have left it at “who reads this trash.” But that would not lead to a joke, so she has to become all incensed that they might like that trash and want to see the author. In Real Life Luann would have said “whatever” and walked away.

Just as I wish Greg had walked away from this weeks sleazeathon.

Oh, Luann negates her mother and best friend going to the author meeting, huh? We’ll see about that.

So in these mermaid romances, is it the Splash style of mermaid that auto-morphs into having legs when on land, or is it the kind of mermaid that wishes she were “part of your world” and makes a deal with an evil sea witch?

Inquiring minds…well, actually, don’t really want to know. Lots of cringe in this arc.

And now the mystery becomes the author (no peeking, girls) and WILL Luann want to tag along? Okay, Greg, stun us with your oft proven ability to keep us from knowing or guessing what you are doing.

Gotta say that Greg is telling a whole story with Nancy’s and Bern’s facial expressions in panels 1 & 2.

Panel 1, Bern’s uneasy but Nancy’s perfectly clam, like “OK, so…?”

And then in Panel 2, Bern’s embarrassment and chagrin, and Nancy’s smirk, like “yeah, what did you think?”.

Are they what? Using the books as tools? Attracted to each other? Having an affair? This story started out creepy and moved on to stupid even faster than usual.

In the third panel, you can see that Luann’s lower dentures just flopped into her glass of milk.

What does Bernice mean by “especially now”?

A major SHEESH moment?

I love the expression on Bern’s face in the second panel.

I think for Luann hearing Berbice talking in her sleep about Bernice the mermaid, who goes after Jack the mermaid and despairs because he goes after Luann the mermaid was too traumatic. Now her brain automatically removes any information about those books. Love how Nancy and Bernice have no problem admitting they are fans of those books.

OMG! You are probably right – Mr. Fogarty! And if it is not – Greg and Karen should make it Mr. Fogarty because nothing could be more perfect or funny!!!

Looks like Bernice wants to see this writer especially because it shocks Luann. What a child. And Luann is acting like seeing a writer in public is dangerous. What a child. I hope the writer is Knute.

This is painful.

Look at the expressions on Nancy’s and Bernice’s faces. They are very telling of what Luann’s “best friend” and “mother” are really like. First these two plan an outing, leaving Luann out, and then they gleefully react to Luann’s surprise at what’s going on. I’m quite disappointed in them, especially Nancy. Bernice treats Luann like that all the time, but I’d hardly expect Luann’s own mother to do the same. This comic is becoming more and more disappointing. Luann is treated with no respect, and I’m tired of it.

D. Coverly is probably a seventyish or plus lady.

Luann says “at least you’re not……….” and then Bernice answers Nancy’s “are we?” with “especially now”. That is the most disjointed and stupid exchange I’ve seen here yet, and I’ve seen a few. If Luann was meaning do they use the books as s#x tools then Bernice is doing something under the table that doesn’t belong in any comic anywhere. Obviously Karen and Greg have decided to go with the “s#x sells” theory in their cartoon. Sad. Absolutely no need for it at all, and it cheapens the legacy Greg built.

I can’t believe it took you this long to put two and two together, Luann!

Gee,look at all the shocked and upset comments.Seems the Evans’ storyline is working.

They might encounter a Speed Bump on the way. Otherwise, it might be fun….

So, will the “three amigas” go Borderline Books together to hear “story time?”

More importantly will they go in disguise?

I mean, Nancy didn’t even want her own daughter to know that she reads this stuff. What if she runs into friends, neighbors or co-workers?

And sadly, many fans were right.

If I’m Luann, this makes me so uncomfortable that I might actually move out. If Luann does the same, I can envision story arcs for the future that are more interesting.

MANY of you were wrong yesterday but told me I was wrong. Luann did not know what they were reading until TODAY. In the future you should think twice before positively claiming that you are right and others were wrong!

A lot of sanctimonious and / or hypercritical commenters here. Yes, I would rather find out what really happened at the mansion, but this was was a humorous interlude. Lots of women read trashy novels that border on soft porn. So what?

there is an urban fantasy series about a modern witch called Diana Tregarde. her day job is writing romance novels. I t6hink the author vents a lot of her issues about publishing and fans into those parts of the stories

GREG, your story arcs have come a long way in 30+ years. Too bad.

Luann is surprised that her mother is reading “bodice rippers,” Bernice is reading them, both, or, feels embarrassment at the thought of her mother, and, best friend, are reading them?

Well, I’m glad GoComics let me in. Finally gave up on then last night.

Just between you, The Count and the lamppost… Nancy and Berniece are in a Cougar and Cubby tousey-mousey relationship if you know what The Count means and I think you do.

Its like when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor! Bring Back Ann Eiffel! Who’s with me? Ehhhhhhhhaaaayyy…

I don’t know, but this is actually funny … for a change!

I like the story line. It’s not offensive to me and its the ideal set up for Luann1212’s “Hilarity will ensue.”

Interesting how people react when they discover a woman read books with hornacious content. I adore the look on Bernices’ face when she is out of the closet as a consumer of hornacity. At that moment I think she’d be a really fun date. But that’s just me.

I’m old and I love this arc. Nancy is a great example of ‘older, not dead’ and it’s nice to see that Bernice is enjoying something simply for herself.

She’s taking it well.

So, in spite of the contemporaneous misdirection play(s) it turns out that Lu really did not know that Bern and her mom are sharing a fascination with steamy romance novels. I love the setup, where mom expressed an interrogative, but Bernice came straight out with their enthusiastic support. I think I can predict with, some certainty, that all three will go to the bookstore. Wonder who the author will turn out to be.

Next week we see our titillated trio at the author meeting. Who will be shocked the most, if anyone. Luann or Bernice upon realizing Margo Fogarty is D. Coverly?

Luann has always thought Margo has provided opportunity and good advice. Bernice has always admired school counselor Miss Phelps as a model for her desired career in psychology.

I don’t believe it will be Mr. Fogarty. He has been a “dead” character after retiring from teaching in May 2014 and disappearing after a week-long send off. But anything’s possible.

And what’s with that name, “D. Coverly?” Greg is pretty clever in coming up with names or anagram games and such. Is he sending some sort of clue to the identity?

Remember folks, cover your passion. Ain’t nobody wanna see that.

Now it’s the forbidden fruit. I love Bern’s face in the 2nd panel. maybe next week Luann spots the book left on the kitchen table; she opens it up, reads the 1st sentence and gets drawn in.

OK. To sum it all up. I was wrong about LUANN, I was wrong about a lot of things. I was opinionated. Yes I was convinced I was right. But I am not the nly one. However, that is at it may be. It really is a just a bunch of words and images. So I am off to the snipe bog to hunt snipes. Where I belong.

This story line brought out a whole lot of puritanical people. These are grownups in the strip. Get real.

This arc is hilarious! And so are the comments! I think we all have been waiting for Lu and Bern to grow up and drop the high school hijinks! These young women are in College! They are , “Of AGE”. Talking about steamy romance novels between women is hardly something new or cringe worthy. Heck, the look on Bernice’s face in the 2nd panel is priceless!

Anybody want to bet the next strip is Luann all in for going?

The real question is “why not”?

One things for sure, Luann is not going to be a police detective. She just happens to come across a romance novella brochure and NOW she understands.

No wonder Luann is still single.

I don’t get why so many posters are fixated on the writer of this book as being some guy who is part of the Luannverse. What seems to matter is that Nancy and B are interested in either soft porn or bodice-ripper type books, and Luann is either totally surprised that they (or anyone) would like that kind of stuff, or totally surprised that her assumptions about her mother and her friend are wrong. Why on earth would Mr. Fogarty be the writer? Or, for heaven’s sake, Quill? Or even someone’s idea yesterday — Frank?

On a different note – could “D. Coverly” be a wink and homage to Dave Coverly of “Speed Bump”?

I don’t know…by her reaction in the third panel, maybe it’s Luann herself who’s the author. Remember, we haven’t seen her in a while. She’s shocked that her mom and so-called best friend will find out.

Why is Luann like this? Seriously, not every 19 or 20 yo is such a pill. If they like the books, live and let live, Luann.

I find Luann’s reaction pretty ridiculous. Like, wasn’t she the one who locked the door to her bedroom when Quill was there because she wanted some romantic time with him? Or what about the time they were in the closet backstage and were practically undressing each other (before they stopped, that is)? Or what about the sly glances she and Quill exchanged during dinner with her parents?

And now she’s overreacting to this? Or was it okay for her to be sexual but not her mom or her best friend?

I also have been known to get women steamed up. In my case, though, instead of throwing THEMSELVES at me, they used sticks and rocks.

Hmmm. They must have been defective….

Bernice is the daughter that Nancy never had.

And apparently Nancy is the mother that Bernice never had.

Can Luann really be such a prude? —When her Mom and her BFF are both practically salivating over the steamy “bodice buster” and the chance to to meet the mysterious author, “D. Coverly”?

What you have been missing…

Not to use this as an excuse for any sarcasm or flashes of indignation on my part, but I have seen an uptick in random violenc eagainst Asian people. My son-in-law is full born Japanese, coming to the US in February. He and my daughter were married there, athis suggestions she came back first.Since we got this house from my mother, it was a 3 bedroom. she was a full time colleege student, so we would accomodate her for short home visits and set up our dining room for her during the summer, with folding partitions, etc. This is very different so we made a room in the basement with a contractor, and we turned a small 1/2 bath into a full-shower bath. This meant contractors here for almost 4 months. So I am a bit sensitized and upset about this.

Meanwhile my mother died in home hospice here. the circumstances have me involved in a lawsuit against the facility she was in. I had arm surgery for a pinched nerve which has impacted my musical ability, and a few weeks ago had a mini-stroke, which miraculously has no negative effects.

Now, my band’s drummer the found out he has early stage esophageal cancer, fortunately caught very early, but it still is cancer, and a bad one to get. My own brother died of it in 2006, albeit diagnosed at stage 4, and metastacized. This brought a lot of that back.

Also, 3 months apart, both my sons were in major car accidents, but walked away, however their cars went bye bye. So twice we had the sh*t scared out of us.

So when I tend to be sarcastic, or defensive, it is because I perenally am trying to find an oasis where there is a way , despite the authors. of wanting to see the best in the characters I like, because I have dealt with a lot of stress this year, and am frankly sick of it.

None of that is anyone’s fault here, but maybe it gives some clarity re: me.Also I am sure I am not the only one who has stress, or crap events etc.
