At the height of the storms early Saturday morning, there were over 20,000 customers without power in my area. I was lucky my power stayed on despite severe storms and high winds. I keep flameless candles with built in timers set to make sure there’s always a few lit in all the rooms of my house except for my bedroom. I keep a small flashlight in the headboard of my bed.
It seems Lupin has been joining Puck and The Woman watching British mysteries. Hopefully he’s learned to focus on the first 10 minutes of the shows or he’d be lost for the rest of the program.
Yikes. Earlier this year we had a blackout while I was at work. The library had to close early because of it. If only there had been cats around to report on the situation!
Even with all the lights off, there is enough ambient illumination from the outdoors that I can make my way around at night without turning on the lights. That is until I got two black cats. Belle and Hamilton don’t just disappear in the dark; they become mini black holes, consuming any and all passive light. Therefore, on the steps at night, they are quite invisible.
Our staircase has handrails on both sides. We installed them when we were caring for my mother and father, so they could hold on with both hands and climb or descend safely. Those handrails have proven very useful because you never know when you might step on something warm, furry, and squishy that takes offense at being trodden on.
The last panel is wonderful. I’m very fortunate, we haven’t had a power outage where I live since before Paul died. I think the last one was during his first bout and we came home from his radiation treatment to find lights flickering.
And then they discover the body in the orangerie. Blunt force trauma, a protruding knife, and 3 bullet holes arranged to form the vertices of an equilateral triangle.
Goldie at the anchor desk! Puck sort of blending into the darkness! (I wonder if Puck would ever make himself invisible, if there would ever be a situation he’ d feel the need to shed his clothing…) Oh no, the brooch! Perfection as always. Love it!
One of my kids & I decided to play a card game today.
And shortly moved ourselves and the cards to a cat-free zone to finish the game.
(We also have gotten in the habit of taking pics of our Scrabble games while in progress, just in case one of the cats leaps into the middle of the board.)
I love how committed Lupin is to the bit. Hard to see why the children look so scared when they have four cats and an alligator flashlight to protect them!
We never did blanket forts during blackouts. Don’t feel like I missed anything. Candles, flashlights, camp lantern, oil lamps, battery lanterns, we had plenty of lights. And then there was cards and boardgames for family interaction and books for reading to give something to do.
Residual from Georgia having grown up in Rhode Island. Power failures happen (or, at least, did when I was younger) rather regularly because of, among other things, the salt water being blown off Narragansett Bay and onto power lines. I went to visit my childhood friend in Colorado and one night the power went down. Her father woke me up to reassure me that he was leaving a flashlight in the guest room for me and he was a bit nonplussed by the equanimity with which I accepted news of a power failure.
Power outages are fun if you have gas heat and city water. Not so much if your HVAC and well pump are both electric and your house doesn’t have a fireplace (no light, no heat, and no water…). I have made a tent though – our of reflective survival “sheets!”

The lights off in the evening
And we ain’t got nothing to see
We’re home and do some mourning
It got too bad feeling a bit creepy
We ain’t nothing but frightend
Man, we’re just frightened and missing a brooch
Hey there, humans
We could use just a little smooch
You can’t start a board game
You can’t start a board game without a board
This brooch’s still away, dame
Even if we’re just playing in the dark, Lord!
