“I ordered a piece of pie at a diner, and the waiter gave me a small piece. If the pie was a pie chart for ‘what would you do if you had a million dollars’, he gave me the ‘donate to charity’ piece. I would like to exchange mine for the ‘keep it’!” – Mitch Hedberg.

That’s how I try to deal with most of life’s major and minor reverses. I remind myself, “Don’t complain, it could be worse.” Freezing weather, blizzard, dead battery, water heater broken… "Don’t complain, it could be worse "

This reminds me of an AT&T Wireless commercial where the woman gives a little girl a lollypop and then gives her brother a bigger one. The girl exclaims, “That’s not fair!”

What did this girl do to deserve ANY lollypop to begin with? The fact that AT&T ran this commercial for months without any backlash is an indication as to how entitled Americans feel that they are.

People have felt entitled for thousands of years. In one of his parables, Jesus tells of a vineyard owner who hires people in the morning, more at midday and even more at the end of the day and pays them all the same amount. Those who were hired early complained even though they were paid a fair day’s wage.

Life is a lot easier when you look at yourself rather than compare yourself to others.

So Calvin, there are children who go to bed hungry which is a lot worse than no dessert.

Life is what you make it, you can make it hard and brutal, or you can make it wonderous and exciting. We have never lived in a time of such plenty and yet even with AC and fast cars people complain about dollars and dimes.

Considering that we live in a society whose businesses are in business of selling food, and we are surrounded by constant advertizing about food, I detest this artificial control of food for children.

If children’s food wasn’t cotrolled as much as it is, we wouldn’t have this atrocious epidemic of grossly overweight kids waddling about and who end up with diabetes type 2, which is completely preventable.

In real life, if my kid wanted to eat the whole pie, I never blinked an eye. If he wanted to eat dessert before supper, he did it.

In our house food was never used as a punishment or as a reward.

None of my kids are overweight, since they never had to feel that they would be deprived.
