Years ago, my Chevy pickup had a manual transmission in it. I parked it in a spot, shut off the ignition, got out and closed the door. I turned my head a couple seconds later, after taking a few steps, and saw my truck rolling backwards out the parking spot. Luckily I ran back, got in the truck and hit the brakes, before it hit someone or something. I guess the stick did not fully shift into a gear to lock it in place.
And before you all say, âWhy didnât you use the emergency brake to prevent this?â, the E. Brake wasnât working in the first place. At the time, the whole cable was froze up and I didnât have the money to get that fixed yet. I no longer have that truck and moved on to bigger better things.
Ooh⊠Youâve done it this time, Calvin! This ainât no unprovoked water balloon attack, class disruption or noodle incident! This is the big league! Yessiree bob, itâs military school for you, boyo! May God have mercy on your doomed soul!
Not Calvinâs fault. Motherâs Fault. She should have set the parking brake when she parked or bad brakes. Calvin just prevented a possibly worse accident without realizing it. May Calvin is becoming ForeShadow Man.
Whatâs he worried about? All he has to do is not admit he was messing around in the car in the first place. Thats what I did when I was 8. My Dad never figured out it was me that let the car roll into the street. lolâŠ.
According to Consumer Guide (dot) com, the average new car in 1989 cost about $12,000, and the cheapest was a Yugo for $4,349 plus $999 for air conditioning and AM/FM stereo.
Letâs start rehearsing. There were these two guys in ski masks pushing it out of the driveway. We chased them off, but they didnât set the brake, and⊠well there you are. I told Hobbes not to eat them. They looked like they hadnât bathed. But weâre still heroes, right?
This clearly demonstrates that, whatever powers Stupendous Man (alter ego of mild-mannered Calvin) may possess, precognition is certainly not one of them.
As Calvin keeps saying.. âOh Manâ. I think Hobbes may be quoting the âcurrent valueâ of the car in itâs present condition â $75. Yeah, Oh Man, wait until Mom and Dad arrive on the scene. LOLâŠ
One obviously canât tell much from the small part that we see but it doesnât look like the car is too badly damaged. Having it towed out of the ditch will be costly, of course, and heâs certainly going to be in big trouble for pushing it out of the garage and across the street, but it doesnât seem to be totaled or anything. So thereâs that.

Years ago I forget to set the parking brake on my truck while I was at work.
Someone came up to me and asked, âDonât you own a black Toyota?â
âUm, yes, why?â
âBecause itâs in the ditch, out behind the parking lot.â
It took a quick jerk from a tow truck to get it out, no worries. And I never forgot to set the parking break ever again.

How in the world did Calvin (and Hobbes, lol) manage to push a car? I canât believe it was parked in neutral!
