Dating someone outside his hometown is a crucial point with Michael at this point in his life and should be a big warning sign to Rhetta that Mike is not considering her as his long-term girlfriend because deep down inside he wants to date someone from his university. Rhetta, like Martha before her, realizes that she is no longer Mikeâs number one choice.
Michael wants to be a writer, correct? Thus begins Michaelâs education OUTSIDE the classroom as an idea forms in his mind on writing a book called âThings not to say to a womanââŠ.courtesy and influenced in large part by Rhetta.
Iâve only been to a couple of weddings. My cousins when I was a kid and when my mother wanted me to go with her to a coworkers wedding. Why do people (mostly women) cry at weddings? Theyâre getting married, not buriedâŠ
Oh come on, Rhetta! You were a summer fling almost two years ago. Certainly graduation should have been the end of it. A blind man could see itâs not going to last and I donât know why youâve kept it on life support as long as you have.
The first of my childhood friends who married did so when she and I were nineteen. There was a baby involved. I was not invited to the wedding and would not have accepted if I had been because I believed deep down to the marrow that she was making the mistake of a lifetime, that sheâd have been much better off making a go of it as a single mother. Because she was a kind and generous soul, my adamance on this point somehow did not result in ruining our friendship. And a few years later her husband came out of nowhere and helped me through a tight spot. Just thinking of it now fills me with gratitude and humility. Alas, I havenât seen either of them in fifteen years now, thanks mostly to an alienation caused by the disgraceful behavior of someone I did think very highly of in those days. I guess you never know.
Another friend of ours followed not long after. I didnât get an invite to that one either, though our relationship was much less fraught and I could have attended and been happy for him in good conscience. I really donât mind, he may well have been trying to keep things small.
Come to think of it Iâve been passed over for wedding invitations many times in my life. It would be very hypocritical of me to complain, because my being invited to a wedding, or worse still attending one, always fills me with crankiness at the ostentation of it all. Just the other day I got a save the date from a cousin and realized that the last time I can clearly remember speaking with her, Clinton was in office. Yet sheâs invited me to fly across country on a holiday weekend. She should have saved herself a stamp.

They are all at a fork in the road of their life. Gord and his fiancĂ© have gone one way. Mike is surprised his friend has beaten a well worn path before he has, and suggests they havenât dated more girls. Can you blame his GF for her reaction?

Yes, Mike, you did.

I remember that look. âBuddy, you wanna date somebody outside your home town? Be my guest. Oh, and you can drop me off at the next bus stop.â

Seems like Rhetta and Michael do not live in the world of television. There people go to public school then marry their prom date.
