When I was 12 I was able to buy any kind of alcohol, simply at the supermarket.

After the recent assassination in Japan, our newspaper printed these stats on guns/100 people: Japan 0.3, USA 120.

Well, just raise the age of consent and everything else to 21. No one is allowed to do anything “adult” until they’re 21. No drinking, no draft or enlistment, no contract signing, no prison, no guns, no abortions, no marriage, no licenses of any kind. They’re all juveniles until their 21st birthday.

I always wonder how these kids get the money for that kind of purchase. They’re obviously not mature enough to hold down a job.

I was in a similar situation back when I was 19….couldn’t buy a beer or smokes or vote. Then I was drafted and this country had no trouble handing me, us, real “assult weapons”.

The bartender’s first question is to ask for an ID. The gun shop owner only asks which gun he wants.

I have always been for background checks, but that is an invasion of privacy ect.

Of course, the fact that he’s been taught all his life that he’s entitled to whatever he wants, whenever he wants it, has nothing to do with the problem. We wouldn’t want to question that; it might damage his self-esteem.

Talk about absolutely screwed-up values. The gun lobby promotes and enables mass murder.

Yep. I can see a dangerous connection between the things. Kudos to the barman who do his job.

To buy an assault rifle (an actual class of weapon with an official definition – which includes the capability of automatic fire), you need 1) a very stringent and very expensive federal license (and have since the Firearms Act of 1934; the first assault rifle was made in 1944), and 2) at least $20,000 for the rifle (that’s legally; on the street, add a black-market premium to that price).

An AR-15 is not an assault rifle, as it is semi-automatic only; not at all the same thing. And there is no such thing as an “assault weapon”.

If you want to make an argument, first learn what you’re talking about. Misusing words may fire up those who already agree with you, but will only make those you need to convince dismiss you out of hand for not knowing what you’re talking about.

If we reported every person we think is unstable, the police would be so inundated will calls that they would start to ignore them. Stop calling them assault weapons and focus on restricting all high caliber and capacity weapons that could not possibly be used for hunting without rendering the game inedible! The line of weapons ownership exists already – e.g. you cannot purchase an anti-tank missile. Just pull the line back towards sanity.

I’m not going to get into the debate about firearms in the U.S. I’ve made my opinion on that subject fairly clear over the years. But I do have an observation … I live in a country where legal firearms and ammunition are tightly regulated. The rate of murders, particularly by drive-by assassins on motorcycles, has risen to alarming numbers in the past couple of years. The shootings are almost always drug-related as the narco-traficante mafias fight for territory and dominance.

I have a friend in the National Police who is very involved in the interdiction of the firearms and munitions being smuggled into the country by the narcos. He states, categorically, that these arms and munitions are manufactured almost exclusively in the U.S. and are legally purchased there, then smuggled into Mexico, Colombia, and Peru for future illegal distribution in Ecuador and other South and Central American countries.

I mention this only as a prelude to my observation, that while yes, even heavily regulated, we have crime and murders committed with firearms, BUT our countries Do Not have the plethora of horrific mass shootings so uniquely North American. There is something terribly wrong with the U.S. psyche that allows and even indirectly encourages this type of aberrant behavior by glorifying the gun culture.

Exploring mental health as it pertains to mass shootings is an interesting slippery slope. It ultimately leads to the question of the mental state that allows someone to take another person’s life. If we honestly deconstruct the answer it dramatically implicates the mental health/state of our culture and its relationship to guns and murder in general. And that my comic loving colleagues is sadly a question, and a reflective practice, our county is not ready to explore.

Years ago, there was a Bloom County strip basically talking about not being allowed to buy fireworks, because they’re dangerous, so one of the characters |(steve, probably) says to Opus, “get in there and buy something that goes boom!” Opus comes out with an AK-47 (or something like that) and says, “he says this goes boom. The times, they’re a’getting loopy.”

Just a little data: In the year 2021, Japan recorded one shooting death- for the entire year. In that same year, the United States had four mass shootings on January 1st, with two dead and eighteen wounded.

But because some nutcase in Japan managed to kludge together a homemade gun and shoot a former Prime Minister, gun laws are worthless.

Alcohol is not the problem. It is the people who drink it!

In 1971 the 26th Amendment lowered the voting age to 18. The states then lowered their age of majority to 18. This supported the idea that “if you’re old enough to fight you should be old enough to buy a beer.”What resulted was carnage on the highways. Young people died in higher numbers. Congress then passed a bill linking a 21 years old drinking age to obtaining federal highway funds. States immediately raised the drinking age. There is nothing that stops a state from lowing the drinking age to 18. They just have to forgo any highway funding.Seven states have raised the age to purchase guns to 21. This is a state rights issue.

But the real problem is not allowing citizens younger than 21 to buy alcohol.

Barkeeps I know have either a shotgun or a nice large caliber pistol behind the bar and are good shots. The kid won’t stand a chance to get off but one or two rounds. Then again, it may just be a western thing.

Depending upon the State, Dad may still need to sign to permit his son to buy, own, and use an AR15 or its equivalent since this young blind guy (YBG) is under 21. (YBG is blind since he has no useful eyes; he obscures that with the labels on his cap.) If YBG’s dad is anything like two of the teen boys’ fathers, no questions will be asked, just congratulations and now you are a MAN. Sex, money, and killing and death are the high stakes, forbidden topics that absolutely need to be seen, heard, discussed, and fully understood. Having a rational discussion about science and religion is a rare phenomenon; usually, the more passionately pro-science types are clear they see the practice of religion, the nature of religious beliefs, and the purpose religious events as comical, ridiculous, disdainfully amusing, even damaging and potentially deadly. On the other hand, some Christians who are strongly conservative see science guys as atheists, pawns of the devil. But it is what we do that defines who we are, not what we think or say. If diehard atheists feed the poor every weekend, they are responding with their heart in the same way as anyone who has been deeply religious from before memory.

Not all mass shooters are mentally ill. Not all mass shooters are disgruntled veterans. Not all mass shooters are obsessed with “violent” video games. Not all mass shooters are racists. Not all mass shooters even have criminal records (right up until the moment they first pull the trigger). The one and only thing that every last mass shooter has had in common is that he was HOLDING A GUN. Starting with the one thing that’s common to ALL incidents seems reasonably sensible to me. But what do I know? :-|

Now that I think about it, has there ever been a female mass shooter? (I’m entirely prepared to be told “yes”). Maybe that’s the problem: We should limit gun purchases by MEN and let WOMEN buy all guns they want. Which would bad news for quite a few men, I suppose, but hey, eggs & omelets…

The phrase “responsible gun owner” is like Unicorns and Abomidable Snowmen.

Everybody talks about them but nobody’s ever actually seen one.
