SPECIAL GIFT bow wow?

Why is Bernice questioning whether the gift Jack is bring over is from Luann? Jack sent it to Luann’s phone. That’s seems pretty obvious. If it was a gift for Puddles most people would have said “I’m bringing a gift for Puddles.” Since Jack did not say what any ordinary person would say it obviously is a gift for Luann. Bernice needs to stop being a Debbie Downer.

Puddles seems okay with that!

If Jack begins acting interested in — uh — ‘Puddles’ … how will that make Luann feel? ✨

Luann may not have been aware that Jack and Bernice were having a conversation without (and about) her, but Bernice certainly was! She’s apparently thinking Jack migh be bringing something fot her. If that were the case, though, why would he call Luann to let her know he’s on his way over – and not Bernice?

A possible rift on the cards between the best friends?

Perhaps Jack contacted Luann, because it’s Luann’s house – even if the “gift” is for Bernice. Either way, it’s pretty clear that Bernice is hoping. If the gift is for Bernice, it could be something from the Shelter to help make up her mind to volunteer there; or maybe a dog friend – or a goldfish! So many possibilities… they could all be wrong, however. :)

Jack is bringing a new bowling ball for Luann. The last one had “R” on it. This one has “L” on it.

Yes, Jack is probably bringing Bernice a puppy. Is she never going to live in her dorm again? Because it seems unlikely that you’re allowed to keep a dog in your dorm room. Unless GE continues to write stuff that makes no sense, and we’re expected to buy it without question.

I have a feeling Luann’s “gift” from Jack will be the big let-down she’s about to enjoy.

I hope he didn’t get Bernice a puppy.

I wonder if Jack knows the mine field that he is walking into.

The “special gift” is a front so he can come over, and discreetly ask Bernice for her phone number? So any subsequent messages can go directly to Bernice without needing a an “excuse” in relaying a message via Luann?

Tit for Tat, and it makes sense if you consider the underlying context, established before the Gun, Bets, and Les arc, now continuing. It could be that Jack is bringing a puppy for Bernice, which could be just a puppy, or an opening for more, or something for Luann, who seems totally uninterested (or insensitive to possibility) or some other twist; what is pretty likely is a subtle, or not battle between two old friends now living together. Hope it turns into possibilities and not nastiness or worse.

Seeing that Jack texted LUANN, the gift he is bringing is for her or her dog. Bernice is just being hopeful. Look like she is crushing on Jack?

For the benefit of our morality police: Oh, goodie. Here comes Jack to a girl’s bedroom. See Jack leave the door open? Jack has a gift. It is some kind of pet animal that upsets Puddles. Oh my, see Puddles piddle right there on Luann’s bed? See Jack’s present also get nervous and poop on Luann’s bed? Good bye, Jack. Please take your present with you, and the next time bring candy.

Well, if the intent is that Jack is bringing a gift for Bernice, then he has even less clue about females than I do!

I think it’s safe to assume that Jack meant Luann since he texted her and not Bernice. Animal lover that he is, he would not bring over a surprise pet. I think it’s probably something having to do with training Puddles to fetch or something of that nature.

It’s probably a gift for Bernice and then Luann and Bernice end up fighting about Jack.

Reading the comments a goldfish would be the perfect gift for Bernice. It shows Jack was listening to her at the dog park and he may be interested in her. That would be kind of romantic. I don’t think it would be a dog. Bernice is a guest in someone else’s house. If I had a house guest and someone gave them a dog I wouldn’t like that. That is too much responsibility for someone living in someone else’s house.

I can’t see Jack bringing Bernice a puppy, since Bernice is renting a room and she’d have to get the DeGroot’s OK to get a pet. He wouldn’t just give her a dog with no warning and I don’t think Bernice has the time to take care of a pet.

While Luann was out at the dog park, Jack n Bern did have a cordial conversation.

It will be a gift for Bern and Luann will be humiliated (good), and the arc will be about Luann throwing a tantrum.

Uh oh…. dog alert for Bernice? Jack is really a nice guy♡. But now that she’s living with the DeGroots it’s not exactly the perfect time. Maybe it’s a dog who needs to be looked at and not necessarily adopted? Or is it really a gift for the Adorable Puddles ♡?

Sure. Give a puppy to someone who’s living rent-free in another family’s house. That’s bound to go over well Who could possibly object?

I wish Bernice would vanish like the other characters who did, without a trace. She’s really, REALLY annoying!

Would Jack really be bringing Bernice a “special gift” without specifying that in his text? I can see him texting Luann and saying, “Hey, got a gift for Bernice, but I don’t have her number to let her know.” But to just send Luann a text saying he’s coming over with a special gift, while it’s actually for Bernice, seems too clueless and unkind, IMHO. That would be akin to texting someone and inviting their best friend to a party but while not inviting the person who received the actual text.

More glow in the dark undies?

When dogs are being fostered by rescue groups, they always need volunteers to do things such as walk the dogs. My guess Is it’s a rescue dog and the crew will take it to the dog park and play with it.

Sorry everyone Jack is not bring Bernice a puppy, but a book on how to train dogs. While there he might get Bernices phone number. Remember Luann has never shown any romantic interest in Jack. She had in the past when interested. Remember when she went after the life guard who turned out to be married

I agree that the “surprise” is probably not a puppy for Bern (though it could be a rescue dog he is sponsoring as Penn State DR stated above) but whatever it is it will probably be for Bernice and not Luann and we have a new rivalry started. Looks like Luann might have to start getting used to being a “third” wheel among another of her friends. Of course I guess she can still hang out with Tara or Nil.

In the last frame, Luann’s proportions seem way off… like her backside slid about a foot down towards her feet…

I hope its a goldfish for Bernice! She told him about never having a pet so he probably decided to get her one. How Luann reacts could be interesting, she might start match-making those two!

Luann; clueless as she seems to be half the time (at least.) Never thought that perhaps Jack might be interested in Bernice, since she apparently has crossed him off the boyfriend list. (Which is why she really didn’t need that glow in the dark bra and panty set.)

If Jack’s ‘gift’ wasn’t for LuAnn/Puds, why would he text her to tell her he’s bringing over a “special gift”? If it was for Bernice, (and he didn’t have her number) Jack would have said so in the text.

Maybe he’s bringing glow in the dark undies.

I find it sad that Luann has not seen the connection Bernice had with Jack. It’s a great connection. I can see Jack and Bernice together as a fantastic couple.

So many of the regulars here fault Bernice for her acerbic comments ever suggesting that she is cruel and heartless. I wonder how Luann’s “dig” will be received?

Well it looks like It’s time for the Jack and Bernice dance to begin. Metaphorically speaking.

Why would Jack text Luann that he’s bringing a gift for Bernice and not mention her name? No – it must be for Luann or Puddles, unless GE is just giving us illogical misdirection.

Wow! A flip flop back to post-dog park? Think I got whiplash! :-) Sad that Luann was so wrapped up in herself at the dog park that she was unaware of Jack and Bernice’s conversation, and now she ignores Bernice again. She’s really wrapped up in herself. Wonder what the gift is? After reading comments, I have to agree, that if the gift is for Berm, it may be a goldfish. He does pay attention.

What if Jack came over to Luann’s house with a Special Gift for Bernice, and Luann didn’t care? Not Bloody likely. Look. You got two good friends. You bring over a box of Reeses Cups. You gave one friend some candy, but not the other. How is the other friend NOT going to be just a miffed about that whether they wanted candy or not?

Would Jack bring over a pet for Bernice, without asking permission from the DeGroots first? Sure. Jack’s a nice guy but not the sharpest tool in the tool shed. Course, who’s to say the “gift” is a pet? It could be:

1) Tickets for the next monster truck show in which Bern is invited but doesn’t want to go to.

2) Guest passes to the fitness center where Jack works. Although I can see Bernice or Lu being a tad insulted retorting “Are You saying I’m not _FIT??”

3) Guest passes to the club where Jack’s friend’s band plays and adult beverages are served.

Nah. It’ll probably be a pet for Bernice, like everybody is saying. Might even be Max. Maybe that’s the reason We didn’t see Max at the dog park a few weeks ago. Now “who” was that who was complaining about the introduction of yet another “small cute little animal” to change a character’s disposition?

One more thing. Isn’t it odd that the Bets, Gunther, Les, story was inserted right in the middle of THIS arc, and that it only lasted a week? ;)

Bernice is getting tired of having a dim-wit for a friend.

Luann is going to be disappointed, I fear.

Bernice’s facial expressions reveal she is expecting something from Jack. Probably a puppy, although I find it odd she wouldn’t clear it with Nancy and Frank first.

Speculation: August 18th. Jack to Bern "Did you bring your dog? Ans “I don’t have a dog.”

August 22nd. Jack’s ambiguous comment. “If you ever want a new best friend I volunteer at the shelter.”

Many commenters (self included) assumed Jack was making an overture to Bernice. It now looks like there will be two pets in the DeGroot residence. And the anticipated “jealousy” may be in Puddles court… errr… kennel?

Most likely it’s for Puddles but that’s okay too.

It is a mystery to me why Jack is still hanging around. Luann and Bernice must be the ONLY available girls for 200 miles around. Luann has blown him off, rather harshly at times, and I just can’t understand the appeal of why anyone would want to date Bernice unless they like judgment and criticism. Go drink a glass of self esteem juice, Jack. There are other girls out there. Same advice I’d give a girlfriend interested in guys who are behaving like Lu and Bernice.

Bernice is definitely crushing on Jack, but that doesn’t mean Jack feels the same way. It could be Jack is just a nice guy, who is just being——a nice guy, but Bernice isn’t picking up on that. She may think that just because Jack paid attention to her, and talked to her, and helped her make insulting comments about Luann, that ooooooohhhhh——-they’re soulmates! And if Jack by some ridiculous twist is attracted to Bern, and since Bernice has probably always been jealous that guys find Luann the more attractive of the two, she’s just gonna loooove rubbing Luann’s nose in it. So all you Luann haters Argythree is always calling out, get ready. Luann is about to be hurt, humiliated, and put down at every turn. You’re gonna love it!

Personally I agree with Mordock. If Bernice and Jack do become a couple, I hope Luann’s reaction is no more than “Meh. That’s nice.”

I know that will (probably) never happen, because G&K refuse to let Luann mature. But if they did do something like that, now THAT would be a twist!

First thing that popped into my head…goldfish.

Jack has dated Tiffany, Luann, and maybe Kaylie. Just plain old fashioned friendly dates. Nothing serious. Bernice has dated Derek and Zane and was DEADLY serious about each guy.

Down the road, I can see a scenario where Jack takes Bernice out for a “fun” date and Bernice ends up having very serious “feelings” for Jack. “Feelings” which Jack doesn’t share.

Maybe the new dynamic of Bernice living with Luann will engender a sibling-like rivalry between the two. We’ve seen hints with the Luann’s parents reaction to “another daughter” Bernice.

Ha ha! Pouty Bernie (panel 3), why would you expect it to be for you, huh? Huh? After all, the message was sent to Luann….

Bernice has NO interest in having a dog. She took something to read if she got bored at the dog park. Anyone who likes dogs would NOT be bored at a dog park.

Question for all the people who’ve been demanding that this strip return to concentrating on Luann:

If Jack is brining Luann another pet, then I doubt that it’s a dog, since she already has one. Maybe if she’s bringing it for Bernice, but if it’s for Luann, then it’s more likely to be a cat.

Sounds like Bernice is getting that goldfish. I’m not really feeling this tension over Jack but maybe through this weird interaction it will spark something in Luann’s thick head about Jack’s potential to be more than just a friend to her.

I’m going to predict that Jack IS bringing something for Puddles, maybe a new ball or toy that Puddles might like better than what Luann had at the park. I think it is risky to bring a new puppy as a gift without any warning. But if he does, then keeping it would have to be an option; he would take it if they could not.

If Jack is bringing a pet for Bernice, I think it’s far more likely to be a goldfish (as pseudomao and a few others have suggested) than a dog. But if he gives her a goldfish, will he also give her a properly equipped aquarium to be a good home for it? One would hope that, as an aspiring vet or vet tech, he wouldn’t encourage anyone to keep a goldfish in one of those dinky bowls with no filter or air pump.

Or is the whole idea really just a red herring?

I really hope this isn’t leading to Bernice and Jack becoming closer while Luann gets jealous. Luann had numerous chances to date Jack and decided they were better as friends, so she has no right to be jealous that someone else wants him. She did the same thing to Gunther back in middle/high school: choosing not to date him but getting possessive and jealous whenever he got attention from someone else. It’s absolutely rotten behavior and I’d hoped she’d matured past that. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Is it possible that Jack has already been in touch with Bern about his visit? Maybe they have been corresponding; Bern acts as if she knows something. Since it is Luann’s home and since Jack has been friends with Luann for some time, he can’t just come over to see Bern and not acknowledge Luann. It is hard to tell what the intent is right now

Summer break is almost over, and so did Luann graduated? Will Tiffany go back to Moony University?
