Research is Bernice’s forte

This is just so darn sweet! I love this arc! Luann is NOT jealous, but is happy for her friend. I think this is just great.

Yep, that’s the Bernice we all know and sort of love.

Luann has her own brand of snark – a little less subtle than Bern – but funny today.

I am surprised that Bernice is not floating around the house?

Will Bernice have another freak-out episode after she notices that the tank is leaking at 5 AM…and then cook fish and chips (er, pancakes) for breakfast out of embarrassment?

Luann is channeling jeff ross, the stand-up comedian who roasts people. She’s not jealous like i thought, she’s roasting bernice.

Now Jack thought of everything.

For all the Bernice trashing around here, what I think is really going on is that we have never delved into her character at all. Or, if we have, as Mordy likes to say, amnesia has set in!

At any rate, for all the snark attributed to Bernice last week, well, this week it appears to be Luann’s turn.

The unresolved question (and it’s Thursday now) is whether Bernice is going to misinterpret Jack’s intentions.

Or, have we?

I hope she’s not so busy researching that the fish will die from neglect.

Luann is just giving Jack a little insight to her friend in a humorous way. It’s as though she’s encouraging him to give it a shot, which also tells the big guy that Luann, herself, is not romantically available to him.

“Step one: Flush fish down toilet. Oops, that’s the last step.”

I like Bernice!

There used to be an age old myth that goldfish memory was about 3 seconds. Of course, current testing has determined that their memory is actually a lot longer – sometimes months. The earlier erroneous belief that a goldfish had a 3 second memory life was probably why people put them in small tanks – they figured that when it took the fish about 4 seconds to swim around the tank, it wold come back around to the same spot, and think, “Wow, this is cool, I’ve never been here before…”

Goldfish do not have a stomach. Whatever you feed them, their intestine breaks down the food and allows it to be absorbed. Whatever you feed them now, it starts coming out the back in about 12 to 15 minutes.

Was Luann actually guessing the life expectancy of the goldfish?

Getting the laptop huh? Bernice must really be excited and the proof is the way she expresses it, doing research. Luann uses some hyperbole, but it was fitting funny comment. Will that turn on Mr. Nice Jock in a weird way? More hilarious drama in Luannverse.

if I were setting up an aquarium for the first time, I think I too would be looking up information. The water quality has to be right for the species of fish. It might initially seem odd (to Jack) but she’s on the right track. Get instructions first.

Bernice is in laptop’s heaven? A fantail gold fish and one dollar fish aquarium. Does Jack have a last name?

Actually, I’m thinking the laptop is because she wants to set up a webcam channel for the fish.

(BTW, are we taking suggestions for what to name the fish?)

Think about this carefully, Jack – Luann has proved that she can fix your flat. Think Bernice can fix your flat?

Ah. Another snark, Luann? Loyal Luann fans, don’t tell me she was just being funny. That IS a snark – following yesterday’s. So, it is not just Bernice. It is human nature. Bernice snarks up front with Luann while she apparently does it behind her back. So, who is the worse friend?

How come Luann can get away with snarky comments but if Bernie dares one… the end of the world is nigh!

There! You see Jack? You’re gonna have “fun” dating Bernice, just as long as you’re near an electrical outlet for Bern to plug in her various “devices.”

One word of advice? Flattering words? Fine.

Constantly mentioning that you bought “gifts” at bargain basement prices?

Jack’s stock keeps rising and rising. Now its time to see if this is a platonic relationship in the making or is Jack going to push the envelope……..

I see a leaky $1 garage sale goldfish tank coming up. I hope I’m wrong but…

LuAnn seems to be a little too involved with the fish. She is offering to help set up the tank. I didn’t see Bernice ask her for help. Bernice’s fish, she should be in charge of the set-up when she gets back with her computer. Also, I agree that you never tell the recipient of a gift the cost.

It’s like in Grade 5. They play together with no idea about hormones, then one girl gets a funny feeling during an innocent interaction. L & J don’t even notice each other, but in art class, Luann found Jack as a model totally awkward.

I had a goldfish when I was a kid and so did my mother. She constantly nagged me to change the water. I always forgot. My lived 2 years, hers made it 6 months. She stopped the nagging.

I like the thought of jack and Bernice. I think they could bring out positives in each other. Bernice needs to have more fun, and it wouldn’t hurt Jack to be a little more intellectual. And Bernice needs a nice guy with a big heart who will stand up to her if she gets all bossy like she can lol

Didn’t someone say yesterday that, if Jack really cared, he would have bought a bowl to put the fish in?

We have a blue Siamese Fighting Fish in a small bowl at home (bought by my wife and son, against my advice). From a graceful dancer with lovely wavy fins to a mangy little creature swimming half-heartedly around its confined space, has been a journey of a few months, but I’m surprised it has made it so far…

Bernice isn’t gonna have to time to play with her new little fishy.

Bernice would probably spend three days researching what to feed her pet rock.

I’ve never seen Bernice drawn with an ear-to-ear smile.

Luann sure hates learning. Her grades must really suck.

I wonder if Bernice knows anything about art? Speaking of which. When was the last time Luann alluded to her artistic talent in a strip? There for awhile she was all about it.

It’s refreshing to see Bernice so full of enthusiasm. For once she’s happy and positive ♡. I guess Jack first saw that aquarium, and then decided to take it and give Bernice a goldfish remembering their chat. What a nice guy ♡. Luann seems (once again) really impressed by his kindness ♡.

Is there a Web site for how to discipline your goldfish when it doesn’t obey you?

In real life, that poor fish will be dead and flushed down the toilet within two weeks.

Jack seems to have a lot of time on his hands. All this in just a few days for a person he barely knows. He is either really smitten, or just loves treating people.

A fish tank for a buck! Is it going to leak? The fish will need a name. Is it a boy or girl fish. What excitement will we have and will Bernice give Jack a thank you kiss

The glue in a fish tank gives for a while and allows the tank to settle to the irregularities of where it is placed and then hardens. The glue will leak or the glass will break on a used tank unless it is set on a soft surface like a block of foam.

Bernice’s tongue-tiedness and attention on Jack lasted all of one strip. Now she’s on to learning about how to take care of a fish. That’s the sign of an active brain.

Really, Jack, you’ll discover that Bernice is highly neurotic and while likable, difficult to be in her company for very long.

Good for Bernice! A person should always research how to take care of a pet! Wait until she finds out about filtration, pH and the nitrogen cycle.

So does the number 937 mean something? That’s like 40 days. What an ignorant remark. She remains the rudest character in this strip. I would take Ann Eiffel any day. At least she’s an honest back stabber.

I just read How to take care of a goldfish on WikiHow. One goldfish needs tank that holds 20 to 30 gallons water. NSet up tank before you put fish in. That means large gravel and some scenery for fish to play and hide in.

I really can’t get excited over a goldfish (those we had when I was young did not last very long even though well cared for). And I am not at all excited about Bernie’s sudden crush on Jack (for such it is), who is simply being a considerate friend….

Jack is only interested in Bernice as a friend. A man looking for GF would NOT tell her he got her a gift that only cost a dollar. Jack is letting Bernice know she is a friend.

Proper pet care, no matter how big or small, is key to the healthy life of your fur (or scale) baby. Different fish require different things. Some fish can’t inhabit the same tank as other fish, some need a specific sized tank, some need a special kind of food.

I hope the aquarium doesn’t leak. I got one at a yard sale that leaked. It was okay for my pet hermit crabs, but no way would it have worked out for a fish.

Lol! I’d do the same thing, but it wouldn’t take 937 hours. More like 5 minutes, unless Jack or Luann have experience with goldfish. Love Luann’s enthusiasm. And apparently Jack has a lot to learn about Bernice! Luann tends to exaggerate, but I hope he doesn’t get frustrated with Bernice. Or Bernice get frustrated with Luann when she takes over?Wonder what’s happening at the gulag!

I married someone like Bernice. Best decision ever. Sill in love 35 years later.

When I imagine Jack’s voice, it’s a lot like the peanut M&M on the TV commercials. Does anybody else try to “hear” the characters voices?

Still looking for the “sexual tension” some of you keep mentioning. Oh, wait- there is none! Jack, Luann, and Bernice are all comfortable with each other and animal-lover Jack’s sweet, innocent gift of the goldfish.

As for novice fish owner Bernice researching how to take care of her new pet, it’s the responsible thing to do. I still research our Koi and we’ve had them for twenty years!

I remember a Quigman’s cartoon from years ago – it showed two goldfish standing outside their bowl watching the fire as their little castle inside the bowl burned. One fish tells the other fish, “Well, thankfully, we made it out OK, of course, now we’re equally screwed…”

Good thing Bernie is doing a little research. Otherwise, she might come to the conclusion that the goldfish is lonely and needs a companion. I could imagine Jack’s reaction if he were to come over the next time and find a hamster or rabbit in the tank with the fish.

The dog is “Puddles”; maybe the fish could be “Puddle”.

I don’t see Jack with Bernice. If he was interested in her, why would he tell her the tank was $1? Not everyone enjoys thriftiness so early in dating. Bernice is a drag. I find it hard to care about her character. Luann is a bit heavy with the snark. Even if she isn’t jealous about Bernice’s fish, she is being unpleasant. I wouldn’t want my friend making jokes at my expense. It’s all very strange what is going on here.

Does any of them know that the Chemicals in Tap Water will Kill a goldfish?

OMGosh. I think Jack is just a nice guy and he did a nice thing for a friend. I do not see him and Bernice as a thing.Some friends are snarky, some are glib, some say what they think,some don’t. You know. understand and accept your friends as they are, or they are no longer friends. How is that so very hard to understand?

Uh… fish actually ARE complicated pets. To take actually good care of them you have to do regular water chemistry testing and stuff. Also that tank is too small for a goldfish. The rule of thumb for goldfish actually to do well is about 10 gallons per fish. That looks like a 5 gallon.

10 YEARS ago it would be “let me get my laptop.” Today it would be “Let me get my phone.”
