It seems like Iām hearing more and more celebrities on TV say the words āsingerā and āsingingā with a hard G (guh) sound instead of just using the āngā sound.
They say: āSing-Gerā and āSing-Gingā (or even āSing-Ging-Guhā).
And on TV, characters are always saying things like, āWhat will happen to you and I?ā When it should be āmeā. Has the word āmeā become a banned term?? It probably happened the same time āaskā decided to identify as a noun.
thatās what bothers the old āāgastric gas releaseāā ?? how some talking head prononounces a werd? get oph the cowch and moov around. make it hard for the grim reaper to find you..
canāt say fahrt ā¦ might get banned from a comment ā¦ i did when eye tried to use the word Brest, the french harbor city, not the organ or even the piano,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
If on a scale of 1 to 10 you care at level 5. If you say āI could care lessā you could go down to level 4, 3, 2, or 1. If you say āI Could not care lessā you are staying at level 5 but you could care more.
The local network we watch for news is a horrendous mess. Wrong tenses, forms of words that donāt exist, awkward pauses and distinctly unfunny āpersonality chatā. Itās like the station where I once worked that they literally had to script banter for one of the people. We also had someone who when signaled to stretch to fit the news schedule, began speaking verrrrrry slowly.
Here goes: #1 Since when do we begin every sentence with āsoā (and this is not just in the US, international speakers do it too)? #2 In school I learned to put āmeā last (What will happen to you and me?) Now the speaker comes first (Me and my sister are going shopping.)(I believe this may have something to do with our narcissistic culture) #3 When speaking of a person āwhoā, when speaking of an object āthatā. āOtherwise, life is grand! : o)
Iām with Earl on the second one. Right up there with the stupid āProof is in the puddingā which is a shortened version of the original āThe proof OF the pudding is in the eatingā. Proof, of course being a synonym for ātestā as when we list the āproofā of whiskey or āproofā bread dough by seeing if it rises. Thatās like the ignorant āAn exception proves the ruleā only makes sense when proof means ātestā because exceptions to a rule do indeed test that rule.
There arenāt enough words in the language to express my approval of Earlās stance on this one! Also: ājew-el-ree,ā NOT ājule-er-ee.ā āFor all INTENTS AND purposes,ā NOT āfor ALL INTENSIVE purposes.ā
Gee, itās almost like there may actually be regional differences in how words are pronounced and what idioms are used!
And while I admit that ānu-cu-larā irritates me to no end, that doesnāt change how it has been pronounced for years in some places.
As for "could/couldnāt care less ā I was a teenager the first time I remember hearing āI couldnāt care lessā, and I thought the person was just wrong. Where I grew up, it was always āI could care lessā.
As a native of Chicago, since Iāve moved to MN they tell me I pronounce āVolvoā and āsorrowā incorrectly. But they pronounce āAuntā and āaskā incorrectly, so weāre even.
Right with you Earl, not to mention jewLAry instead of jewelry, and reLAtor, instead of realtor. The most annoying are the ones who work in those fields and canāt even pronounce them right!
