Tiffany: Give that girl a badge and call her sheriff! Sheesh. Gunther: I think Bernice is doing a good job as RA. I admire her! Tiffany: seriously? Psh. You two are bees in a pod. Gunther: Peas. But you're right, we are similar. Always have been. In fact, I've often wondered if.... Tiffany: She's your sister? Gunther: I should ask her out.

Wow, someone prefers another girl over the great Tiffany. That should be a major blow to her over-inflated ego.

Gunther, you really blew it with Rosa. Don’t you think a little practical experience ( with,… Duh!) would prepare you for Bernice?

Okay, maybe the Gunther/Tiffany thing really is just platonic, but Tiff does like him and may help him make a move on Bernice. Whatever…….this strip needs a real two way romance.

Well, now I HOPE You and Tiff didn’t Once get “busy” as they used say. Because if You two DID, and You Just Suggested going out with ANOTHER Gal, YOU are About to RECEIVE a Vengeful, Roundhouse SLAP that’ll STRAIGHTEN Your Naturally Curly Hair and Knock You Right into the Middle of Next Year, Mr. G.
Frankly, Now would be a REALLY Good Time to Excuse Yourself and HIT the Door RUNNING.

Guessing from Tiff’s smile when she says “She’s your sister?” she knows what Gunther’s about to say and is teasing him. But I think a flurry of date-coaching and matchmaking will follow.

No! No! Gunth and Berneice would be way less interesting. And it’s likely that Gunth will escape from Tiff, only to have Berneice say “No.”. And Berneice really needs somebody that’s fun.

I don’t think it would even occur to him…

Tiffany likes Gunther. Gunther Likes Tiffany. Gunther Likes Bernice. – …..Bernice likes Piro. – Oh, Gunther… you go chasing an already catalogued butterfly into someone else’s yard- – And stumble over the shiny metallic rock, right there in your own…

True Gunther has been here before but at the same time he is also a bit more mature. Bernice is also slowly loosening up as well..it made be good for them to challenge each others comfort zones as a team..

Gunther has had a relationship with Rosa and this friendship with Tiffany. It seems like Bernice would be boring—unless she’s out breaking the rules. Don’t see it gong anywhere, but a guy has to get to know gals to know what he really wants for the long term.

Bernice may be a jerk, but if Gunther goes after her, I feel sorry for her.

Go for it Gunth. Why settle for the Cutie that admires you hen you can have an uptight hypocrite that wants to play Queen?
Sisyphos almost 9 years ago
No incest, Gunther! You should not become involved with your “sister” romantically. Bernice is a pal or advisor, but not your soulmate.Besides, the Gunther-Tiffany almost but not quite proto-friendship-possibly-leading-to-romance thing is much, much more interesting than anything remotely possible with starchy Bernice….

I love that smug teasing look on Tiff’s face when she prods Gunther:) It’s nice to see Tiffany with a nice platonic friend. Well, Bernice might be her friend too, she was crabby yesterday, but Bernice does that to Luann all the time, so…ha ha ha!

Ok Tiffany, is time to kiss out this idea from Gunthie.
ironman01 almost 9 years ago
First of all Bernice is not “doing a good job”. I wonder how much admiration ol’ Gunther would have if he knew about Bernie’s overnight guest? And Gunthie…get a clue! Talking about possible possible romantic hookups with a female who has obvious designs on you is really bad form.
m98115 almost 9 years ago

OOOOOHHHHHH! WRONG thing to say in front of the girl you had a “moment” with, Gunther!
dlkrueger33 almost 9 years ago
I don’t see Bernice and Gunther together. Tiffany would be good with him….they offset each other well.
TCoT almost 9 years ago
I could see him going on a date with Bernice, and realizing that beyond the academic aspect of their personalities, they really aren’t THAT similar. He’s a lot more laid back than Bernice is.
Aqsnt almost 9 years ago
Actually Tiff should have invited Bern inn. Subliminal !!!
TORAD_07 almost 9 years ago
What will be very interesting is seeing whether Tiff reacts to Gunther’s statement as if they actually did have a “moment” together when they actually didn’t (and I don’t believe they did, either). It will say a lot about what she’s really feeling, deep down.

Is it usual for a freshman to be an RA? I thought they were upperclass students.
luann1212 almost 9 years ago
Why are so many people so negative on Bernice? She might be a bit of a serious character who takes her responsibilities seriously, and tends to be what is known as positivist—fact-based thinking—like a trained therapist might be, but she just needs to mature, and relate her ethical approach, knowledge, and experience to the real world, one that includes room for being not so rule based. Besides she has her sweet, nutty best friend Luann, and I think they will always be best friends in spite of everything. As for Gunther and Tiffany, well again I am going to wait GE, and apparently his daughter (?) and see what this tease will lead too.
gromit82 almost 9 years ago
Why is Gunther opining on how good a job Bernice is doing as RA? He doesn’t live on campus and has never been under the jurisdiction of any RA anywhere, much less Bernice.
edge2edge almost 9 years ago
You go Gunther. I bet if you get Bernice in a cute girly outfit with a little midriff showing, a hot hairdo and some make up she will be smokin’ hot. And yeah I know Gunther and Bernice are on the cerebral side but they are still young and have a normal lust for life.

5I am disappointed in Gunther again. Not because he is contemplating asking out Bernice. That is perfectly fine…. hell I “contemplate” all sorts of potential romantic interludes even at my grey-bearded age myself. But I never would say such a thing in front of my wife (or for that matter, I would never have said such a thing to a female friend when I was single either). I think from the past story arcs between Gunther and Tiffany, Gunther should be well enough aware that he should know there are at least POTENTIAL feelings for him that have been expressed by Tiffany and vice-versa. To me, what is disappointing is that he is expressing his interest in asking Bernice out IN FRONT OF Tiffany. A classy fellow would keep those thoughts to himself until he knew his own plan. Gunther is definitely not being particularly kind or classy in this situation. Gunther should think before he makes off-hand comments like that. My suspicion is that Tiffany is going to be very, very hurt by Gunther’s comments. And, IMO it is justifiable that she is hurt by Gunther’s comment.

Didn’t say they couldn’t, but comic strips offer up uniquely quirky personal vistas. That hasn’t changed since the art form took hold, just the ability of people (fans) to exchange thoughts in near real time. And it remains an on-the-fly production with daily deadlines for art and writing. No going back to tweak the past as novelists can. That’s my 2 cents so don’t waste your time with your counterpoint to elongate things.

In real life, Gunther falls hopeless for Tiffany, they marry, have a few babies, Tiffany runs off with the cable guy, and finally twenty years down the road Gunther calls Bernice out of the blue and they live happily and boringly ever after.

Could you imagine dinner at Gunther and Bernice’s:“Honey, you’re using the dessert fork for your salad.”“Well, Darling, your peas are touching your mash potatoes.”“Honey, you bought the wrong wine. The label clearly states that it is best when used with chicken.”“Darling, the fact that you poured me 7.4 ounces of wine in my glass instead of the recommend 7.5 is a clear sign of your predominant passive-aggressive tendencies, which tells me you’ve decided to take a mistress.”
Yeah, doesn’t that sound like fun!
notbornyesterday almost 9 years ago
sure Gunther, ask Bernice out but some thoughts are best kept to yourself; not only is that the wrong thing to say, it’s the worst possible thing to say at that particular moment
StoicLion1973 almost 9 years ago
I think Tiff will be for a Gunther/Bernice relationship it but ultimately grow jealous.
RSH almost 9 years ago
Gunther is more relaxed, (comfortable in his skin) than in the past but I think he chooses his words carefully. He’s thinking these thoughts out loud on purpose because he knows he spends a lot of time with Tiffany helping her with school work and he doesn’t want her to get any ideas about a possible relationship. He said that months ago to her and he is just reinforcing it. If they are just friends in a platonic way then they should be able to be open about these things.

This is the smartest thing Gunther ever said. Bernice is just his type. I knew Gunth and Tiff were just friends.
locake almost 9 years ago
It has been obvious all along that Gunther has NO interest in Tiffany. He is adamant that no one think he is involved with her. That was why he snapped at Quill and protested to Bernice just now. I’m sure Tiff can sense that he is not interested in her that way. They are just pals.
Pipe Tobacco almost 9 years ago
Dave…. really? I guess somehow that conversation (about romantic entanglement not being for them) didn’t register with me. If you can, it might be nice to repost it here just to refresh my memory. With your idea in mind, I am wondering if whatever they specifically said could be interpreted as either a) that they “shouldn’t” have a relationship (with perhaps wistful regret because they wouldn’t mind having a relationship) or that more directly b) no, they did not really want to have any sort of romantic relationship?
Pipe Tobacco almost 9 years ago
Brdshtt…. thank you for posting that comic that Dave (BuckarooDave3) was referring to. I appreciate being able to see it again. To me, reading it, my take is still that this “not being romantic material together” comic IS of the variety that I would suggest says that…. a) they both have feelings for each other, b) they think they shouldn’t get involved romantically, but c) they both want to get romantically involved. From the perspective of that reading of the comic… I still feel Gunther is being quite rude about talking about asking Bernice out in front of Tiffany. He is (apparently) heading back into his “I don’t give a @^*% about others.” mode again.

I had to look that word up. I think it is an unfair characterization of Gunther who has been very kind and caring to Tiffany on many occasions.. Helping her with homework, her computer, being her lab partner when he probably would have preferred not to (as she appeared to contribute little), even being a shoulder to cry on. And you’re saying he is the sort who doesn’t give a ‘fu….." and is uncaring?? just because he doesn’t want to date her and is being honest about it ?….. which by the way they agreed to be.
Pipe Tobacco almost 9 years ago
Dave….. I can definitely see how the comic could be read in the way you describe, so you could very well be right in how the story goes. However, for me the ambiguity and incompleteness of their statements suggests a regretful acceptance of what they should do, not what they want to do. Again, I may be reading too much into the simple panels, but for me, their should statement is based upon who they perceive themselves to be, and their want statement is more about who they are likely to become.

Look at todays Luann Again…
jwondga almost 9 years ago
Gunther isn’t a player. Not his style.
Gunther is a giver. He gives the very best of himself to others. Even Tiffany, who is this very self-absorbed person who expects the world handed to her on a silver platter, when in actuality, she has done very little to earn the good things in life.
Tiffany is a spoiled brat. If she gets jealous, it will because she – deep down – sees that Bernice works hard to earn the good things in life. And sometimes, it means being tough.
Gunther and Bernice would make a very good match.
And dare I say it, Tiffany has a lot to learn. Tiffany is not stupid – she has the capability to achieve good things with hard work and giving of herself to others.
If Tiffany learns to be a more kinder, gentler and more compassionate person, good things will happen.
Yet, Gunther is a good friend to Tiffany.
Tiffany has no idea how lucky she is – and here she is, taking her friends for granted.
Give and give in, Tiffany. Learn to respect and give to others, and wonderful things will happen….

> It will take years, but the goal is obviously to land Gunther with Luann. Obviously.>It certainly seems that this is the strip’s ultimate goal (unfortunately!!!) Just as Lynn Johnson was determined that “For Better or for Worse” would end with heroine Elizabeth wedding her (i.e., Lynn’s) dream man Anthony, even though the readers found him an incredibly boring dweeb, Greg Evans seems determined that “Luann” will keep heading towards the heroine’s getting married to his avatar Gunther, who is an even more annoying dweeb than Anthony. Since Gunther is currently just too much of a loser to be "worthy’ of the fair Luann, Team Evans will make him go through a series of relationships that build him up into an ever more attractive suitor, and the dweebishness will finally be cast off (yeah, right!) and the new Mr. Super-stud Gunther can finally claim the prize that Greg has always thought he deserved.-To save us all that pain, can Gunther and Luann just elope right now, and get it over with? Thank you, Greg and Karen.

If your reference to the “f” word was in regard to my “&$#(” I can assure you my intention was the “s” word. :) The “f” word is also not one I use, although when frustrated I will occasionally usually prefaced with a term associated with male cattle. :)

axianova almost 9 years ago
Actually, I approve of this story development if to settle one of the long-standing questions of this strip. We need to finally see if a Gunther/Bernice pairing works story-wise. Personally, I do not think a Gunther/Bernice pairing remaining an interesting plot line in the long-run. Like Luann, I think Bernice is best suited remaining a friend to Gunther. But many of us fans have long kept asking for this pairing and the only way to really answer whether it will work is for Greg to finally try it out and see how we react.

“Pragmatist. A positivist takes all things from a positive angle. My mother was that way.”
I think luanfann1212 may be referring to “logical positivism”, a philosophical movement in the early 20th century. According to wikipedia, it held that “only statements verifiable either logically or empirically would be cognitively meaningful”.
