Why are so many people so negative on Bernice? She might be a bit of a serious character who takes her responsibilities seriously, and tends to be what is known as positivist—fact-based thinking—like a trained therapist might be, but she just needs to mature, and relate her ethical approach, knowledge, and experience to the real world, one that includes room for being not so rule based. Besides she has her sweet, nutty best friend Luann, and I think they will always be best friends in spite of everything. As for Gunther and Tiffany, well again I am going to wait GE, and apparently his daughter (?) and see what this tease will lead too.

5I am disappointed in Gunther again. Not because he is contemplating asking out Bernice. That is perfectly fine…. hell I “contemplate” all sorts of potential romantic interludes even at my grey-bearded age myself. But I never would say such a thing in front of my wife (or for that matter, I would never have said such a thing to a female friend when I was single either). I think from the past story arcs between Gunther and Tiffany, Gunther should be well enough aware that he should know there are at least POTENTIAL feelings for him that have been expressed by Tiffany and vice-versa. To me, what is disappointing is that he is expressing his interest in asking Bernice out IN FRONT OF Tiffany. A classy fellow would keep those thoughts to himself until he knew his own plan. Gunther is definitely not being particularly kind or classy in this situation. Gunther should think before he makes off-hand comments like that. My suspicion is that Tiffany is going to be very, very hurt by Gunther’s comments. And, IMO it is justifiable that she is hurt by Gunther’s comment.

Didn’t say they couldn’t, but comic strips offer up uniquely quirky personal vistas. That hasn’t changed since the art form took hold, just the ability of people (fans) to exchange thoughts in near real time. And it remains an on-the-fly production with daily deadlines for art and writing. No going back to tweak the past as novelists can. That’s my 2 cents so don’t waste your time with your counterpoint to elongate things.

The label clearly states that it is best when used with chicken.”“Darling, the fact that you poured me 7.4 ounces of wine in my glass instead of the recommend 7.5 is a clear sign of your predominant passive-aggressive tendencies, which tells me you’ve decided to take a mistress.”

Gunther is more relaxed, (comfortable in his skin) than in the past but I think he chooses his words carefully. He’s thinking these thoughts out loud on purpose because he knows he spends a lot of time with Tiffany helping her with school work and he doesn’t want her to get any ideas about a possible relationship. He said that months ago to her and he is just reinforcing it. If they are just friends in a platonic way then they should be able to be open about these things.

It has been obvious all along that Gunther has NO interest in Tiffany. He is adamant that no one think he is involved with her. That was why he snapped at Quill and protested to Bernice just now. I’m sure Tiff can sense that he is not interested in her that way. They are just pals.

Dave…. really? I guess somehow that conversation (about romantic entanglement not being for them) didn’t register with me. If you can, it might be nice to repost it here just to refresh my memory. With your idea in mind, I am wondering if whatever they specifically said could be interpreted as either a) that they “shouldn’t” have a relationship (with perhaps wistful regret because they wouldn’t mind having a relationship) or that more directly b) no, they did not really want to have any sort of romantic relationship?

Brdshtt…. thank you for posting that comic that Dave (BuckarooDave3) was referring to. I appreciate being able to see it again. To me, reading it, my take is still that this “not being romantic material together” comic IS of the variety that I would suggest says that…. a) they both have feelings for each other, b) they think they shouldn’t get involved romantically, but c) they both want to get romantically involved. From the perspective of that reading of the comic… I still feel Gunther is being quite rude about talking about asking Bernice out in front of Tiffany. He is (apparently) heading back into his “I don’t give a @^*% about others.” mode again.

I had to look that word up. I think it is an unfair characterization of Gunther who has been very kind and caring to Tiffany on many occasions.. Helping her with homework, her computer, being her lab partner when he probably would have preferred not to (as she appeared to contribute little), even being a shoulder to cry on. And you’re saying he is the sort who doesn’t give a ‘fu….." and is uncaring?? just because he doesn’t want to date her and is being honest about it ?….. which by the way they agreed to be.

Dave….. I can definitely see how the comic could be read in the way you describe, so you could very well be right in how the story goes. However, for me the ambiguity and incompleteness of their statements suggests a regretful acceptance of what they should do, not what they want to do. Again, I may be reading too much into the simple panels, but for me, their should statement is based upon who they perceive themselves to be, and their want statement is more about who they are likely to become.

Gunther isn’t a player. Not his style.

Gunther is a giver. He gives the very best of himself to others. Even Tiffany, who is this very self-absorbed person who expects the world handed to her on a silver platter, when in actuality, she has done very little to earn the good things in life.

Tiffany is a spoiled brat. If she gets jealous, it will because she – deep down – sees that Bernice works hard to earn the good things in life. And sometimes, it means being tough.

Gunther and Bernice would make a very good match.

And dare I say it, Tiffany has a lot to learn. Tiffany is not stupid – she has the capability to achieve good things with hard work and giving of herself to others.

If Tiffany learns to be a more kinder, gentler and more compassionate person, good things will happen.

Yet, Gunther is a good friend to Tiffany.

Tiffany has no idea how lucky she is – and here she is, taking her friends for granted.

Give and give in, Tiffany. Learn to respect and give to others, and wonderful things will happen….

    > It will take years, but the goal is obviously to land Gunther with Luann. Obviously.>It certainly seems that this is the strip’s ultimate goal (unfortunately!!!) Just as Lynn Johnson was determined that “For Better or for Worse” would end with heroine Elizabeth wedding her (i.e., Lynn’s) dream man Anthony, even though the readers found him an incredibly boring dweeb, Greg Evans seems determined that “Luann” will keep heading towards the heroine’s getting married to his avatar Gunther, who is an even more annoying dweeb than Anthony. Since Gunther is currently just too much of a loser to be "worthy’ of the fair Luann, Team Evans will make him go through a series of relationships that build him up into an ever more attractive suitor, and the dweebishness will finally be cast off (yeah, right!) and the new Mr. Super-stud Gunther can finally claim the prize that Greg has always thought he deserved.-To save us all that pain, can Gunther and Luann just elope right now, and get it over with? Thank you, Greg and Karen.

Actually, I approve of this story development if to settle one of the long-standing questions of this strip. We need to finally see if a Gunther/Bernice pairing works story-wise. Personally, I do not think a Gunther/Bernice pairing remaining an interesting plot line in the long-run. Like Luann, I think Bernice is best suited remaining a friend to Gunther. But many of us fans have long kept asking for this pairing and the only way to really answer whether it will work is for Greg to finally try it out and see how we react.

“Pragmatist. A positivist takes all things from a positive angle. My mother was that way.”

I think luanfann1212 may be referring to “logical positivism”, a philosophical movement in the early 20th century. According to wikipedia, it held that “only statements verifiable either logically or empirically would be cognitively meaningful”.
