For some reason I get the impression that Evans doesn’t know the other meaning of the word “hooters”. Perhaps he went to the Hooters restaurant and actually believed their story about how their restaurant was named for owls.
Did we backup from the last backup and are we now up to being back to being before Luann and Tara find out there is a Les at the door and a so called never yet proven to exist list?
And No Doubt, One of the ‘Hooters’ will get the ‘Bright’ Idea to invite Tiffany to go, to You Know, “Cheer Her Up?” Well, She Ain’t on the List Either and It Re-Exposes Her to the Worthless Punk.
Bernice would have been much better off saying to Luann, “Can I come too?” instead of “I’m not hootie enough?”. That would give Luann the opportunity to save face and say, “Oh, of course!”, instead of launching a discussion of whether Bernice is fun or not (answer: not) and how close she and Luann are as friends (answer: not as much as they used to be).
I also wanted to see what would happen when Luann gave the card to Tiffany. Since Luann is visiting the dorm to do that (at least in part), she shouldn’t leave without attempting to give Tiff the card.
(By the way, I’m assuming that the events depicted in the strip are occurring in chronological order, until we hear otherwise. That is, Luann and Tara were turned away from Ann’s second lingerie party, and now Luann, Tara, and Dez are planning to go to the third lingerie party. No flashbacks needed.)
If Bernice goes to that lingerie party, there will be one big blowup! Leslie’s mother, Ann Eiffel created many problems for her in the past. Expect big fireworks…because Ann is up to no good. Bernice may be the one to bring her down. I hope Leslie comes out of it okay though, because he’s turning into an okay guy. Still has some things to work out though.
Tara and Luann have both been added to the List via Les. Is it possible to add last minute plus ones? Maybe it would be possible with a phone call to Les? I don’t know why Bernice is getting her panties in a twist. If she is feeling left out, all it takes is " that sounds like fun can I come to?" It doesn’t really sound like her kind of event but no one is going to tell her No. Well maybe Les. Bernice and Des are not on the List…yet.
SOme people are lost but I am not I fully expected the arc that started with Tara, and way before actually, when you consider the events, and all the waves of effects, from Gunther to Piro to Tiffany, to Dez, then finally to the protagonist (remember this is about Luann) who ends up liking, a lot, Tara, who Bernice had a major hand in having her expelled from Mooney. Now Tara is fun, and exciting, and really “taking” her friend, and her mother earth roommate, and Bernice with her repressed self is not only more than a bit peeved, but jealousy, anger, competition, disappointment, in fact the 5 stages of relationship angst, all are about to happen. I predicted it, so I feel vindicated. I knew eventually it all would circle around to the relationship between Luann and Bernice. Oh and Tiffany and Gunther are going to be brought along for the ride. Luann still has to present the card. You can’t be lost in Luannverse, you just need to hold on for the ride.
This will test Bernice and Luann’s lifelong friendship. They outgrew each other. Luann is meeting new people and doing new things while Bernice is still same person, not much of a personal growth. Bernice will blame Tara for the fading friendship with Luann but really, it is Bernice’s as well as that it is normal that high school friends drift away as they grow into different people. Bernice needs to find her people – she hasn’t met them yet. She needs to socialize more in order to find her people. Luann and Bernice can remain friends if they accept who each other is, accept each other for the persons they have become. Could go either ways – stay friends or kaput.
After high school, young adults tend to grow, discover, and learn who they are on their own and don’t stay stuck in their little high school circle. And as they grow, they change, some faster than others. Some ‘best friends’ from high school will grow apart when perusing their goals. Some branch out and try new things, others just plod along through life. Luann and Bernice are growing apart right now and that’s fine. They may or may not grow closer together sometime in the future, but the bottom line is they are all acting like normal young adults; some are more adventurous than others (Luann), some are more sure of their path in life (Bernice), and sometimes they make drastic changes in their life (as I have a feeling Tiffany will do). Look how Brad changed after high school, and Gunther sure surprised some people with his experience. This comic is a nice mix of all kinds of personalities and it’s fun watching them interact and try to predict what will happen next and how each of them will grow. And just like real life, some people will fade or exit from the circle and new people will come along to either fill a void or expand horizons.
I’m guessing Luann still doesn’t know that the party is being run by Ann Eiffel. I’m pretty sure Bernice would not want to be there if she knew Ann was there.
Bern didn’t want to go with them the first time and now she is upset she is being left out. She wants it both ways, it seems. But it would be great if she went and met up with Ms Eiffel.
Just a brief diversion, if you’ll kindly pardon it, please…..Thank you to Dog, Argy, JPW, and everyone else for your kind expressions, in regard to an emergency situation that arose yesterday! We are managing well, and we thank God for both this, and for your thoughts and kindnesses!
I mentioned several days ago (pre archery) that the Luann/Tara dialogue seems to be what the Luann/Bernice dialogue used to be, pre New York blowout. Also that, like Papa & Mama DeGroot and Puddles, Bernice had been relegated to the Sunday comics. Now we see the hurt feelings of a very insecure young lady.
Greg is juggling too many plots lately; creating too much tension. What is happening with the title character is not the main interest any more. There seems to be at least five characters who are drawing our interest away from Luann’s life.
Are the Degroots aware that Ann Eiffel is the one putting on the “lingerie parties”? Is Bernice? Are there going to be some crazy fireworks if they go to this event – whatever it is – and find out who is running them???
I am going to disagree slightly with the trend in the comments. I think it was a little insensitive of Luann not to include Bernice. On the other hand, a more mature Bern might have said, “I am not famous for my hooters, but I would like to come as well.”
I am also going to disagree with those who want to return ASAP to Tiff and Gunth. I think that arc is resolved for now. Tiff is struggling, but apparently going to get counseling, and Gunther was emotionally there for her. (Those who fantasize about wild sex on Tiff’s couch are disappointed.) This current arc is bringing together two important elements, and letting us readers find out what’s really going on with Ann’s scheme.
Most Remote Plot Twist: Bern decides to dress sexy (tank top – low jeans – show some flat belly) – Les hits on Bernice and she goes for it. Les & Bernice an item for a while – that would be an interesting stretch.
Would Tara and Dez really feel that watching a Victoria’s Secret-like sale would be a thrillingly fun and outrageous event to attend? I tend to doubt it and doubt either of them would spend money on that stuff (unless Dez has a boyfriend that we haven’t met with particular interests in what Dez wears) – it’s not their style. I could see them all doing more adventurous stuff that might not be as titillating to male readers. Re: Luann making plans with Dez in front of Bernice, I can see why Bernice would be hurt. I’ve hit it off with friends of a friend and the original friend did indeed feel left out if I wanted to socialize privately with the other people. One could argue whether she should have felt hurt, but it’s human nature, especially with how long Luann and Bernice have known each other.
We’ve seen Bernice in “lingerie”. See the Oct. 21, 2015 strip. It sort of answers Bernice’s own question. Bernice would be far better off attending a lingerie party in Mary Worth.
This should be very interesting! Many thoughts percolate through my mind as I have my afternoon pipe and coffee break:
1. I do feel it is a little bit insensitive of Luann to invite Dez to the “Lingerie Party #2” directly in front of Bernice without also extending the invitation TO Bernice as well. She could have easily said in panel #2 “Hey – Tara and I are going to a Lingerie Party. Both of you should come!” In this way she would have been more inclusive.
2. Whether or not Bernice would or would not attend the “Lingerie Party” is not the real issue. It was the exclusion from being asked while another friend is asked in Bernice’s presence that is making Bernice feel excluded.
3. I hope and assume that Luann will immediately invite Bernice to ALSO attend with the other three when we see tomorrow’s comic. I think Luann was insensitive here, but unintentionally insensitive…. she was just acting on the spur of the moment without thinking through that Bernice knew nothing of the “Lingerie Party”. So, I believe she will work to fix this correctly.
4. But, the big looming issue I see is that there is “Les’ List” to deal with. If the four of them show up…. only Luann and Tara are on the “Les List”. Will that lead to drama where Les will not allow Dez and Bernice to enter too?
5. I tend to side with the folks who find the “Hooter” term being used here a bit uncomfortable. I weigh in on the side that Greg is doing this purposefully to increase reader’s emotions. It seems that it has a purpose, even though perhaps not fully realized yet.
Normally Tiff would be the one to want to go to a lingerie party but not in her current physical state. Will she try to crash diet her way back? Is there any thread between Tiffany’s state of affairs and this developing arc in which Luann becomes chummy with Mooney students and Bern feels left out? That said, when Bern is alone Piro sometimes shows up. yes… love is fragile and “messy”.
If Delta and Rosa could be casually and easily written out of the strip (for all practical purposes), it should not be so difficult to have Luann and Bernie at long last go their separate ways—Luann, slowly but surely maturing and seeking out new adventures with her new ’bestie," Tara; while Bernie pouts and grumbles and becomes more and more of an anally-retentive prig as she fades to the sidelines….

Bernice belittled the body art expo and didn’t go, and has turned up her nose at Tara.
Luann’s knee-jerk reaction is to presume that Bernice would not be interested in the lingerie event either.
Bernice is being pushed aside because she’s rather stagnant and Tara is adventurous.

If Bernice and Tara do both go to some event with Luann, it will be interesting to see how they interact. Probably quite uncomfortably.
