1) Love that Jack was so concerned about the girls that he just assumes it’s Luann calling.
2) in the first frame Jackbworries about “the girls” as if he sees them the same way. The second frame seems to show that in fact it’s Luann he’s really concerned about.
3) in the third frame, Luann looks as annoyed with herself as she is with plaid shirt.
I don’t blame Luann. I hate that kind of party too. It’s one thing to be around intoxicated college students, but no one wants to socialize with low-lying Cumulus clouds. They can’t handle their liquor.
See the phone in her hand, Fred Flintstone? Get lost. Her boyfriend is coming to beat you up. SO, where is Tara? Will Luann look for her to let her know she was going home with Jack or will Luann just slip out without seeing Tara until their next class at the CC?
She should have known better before they left the parking lot. Jack is one dependable fellow—especially when he was blown off by Luann and Tara when something new came around.
The blond (not Luann) in the third panel reminds me a lot of my wife when she was in her early 20’s. I wonder where Greg found that picture of us to incorporate into that panel?
One time my husband and I and a friend ate out together. On the way to the bus I worried about the friend walking home okay but didn’t want to be smothering or anything. My husband worried about her, but didn’t say anything over the same fear. She thought about asking us to walk her home, but didn’t want to appear timid. So we parted company, each saying nothing about our concerns. Sure enough, she got mugged.
Perhaps Jack will take her bowling, the lanes are usually open ‘till late. Then again, he’ll be taking her out of one dangerous situation and into another. Still got those crutches, Lu?
I swear, the more we learn about Jack, the more he seems like a dog reincarnated into a human being. Here he’s showing that protective, loyal side that runs in to the rescue. There are worse creatures to resemble than a dog.
Hey, this is more party than Uncle Al had for his wedding. Now, if Jack doesn’t have another flat tire, he can rescue Luann from that over sized Cabbage Patch doll, the couple making out won’t even notice, and the blitzed guy next to them is heading for a nap on the floor. Tara? Who knows?
Well 6 of one, half dozen of another. I thought he would follow, but as some of you said, these girls should be able to take c/o themselves, except as soon as Luann called, and she did call him, he is Jack to the rescue. Will Tara leave too? They can’t just leave her there. Reminds me so much of college.
Glad to see Luann showing some good sense and not continuing her quest for “interesting experiences”… Jack seems to be a genuine and dependable guy – he’s getting more likeable by the arc.
I have no idea why she went in the first place. In real life: Do not get in a car with someone you do not know. Do not let someone you do not know drive you somewhere. Double that if they are drunk.
I’m with Luann on this: I never cared for the “party” scene either (at least to most people I knew, this was how a party should be). Soooooooooo glad I was never that guy.
Wow, guess I don’t see Tara as a match for Jack anymore. And to Luann he’s more of a good friend. He had seen this coming. Also guess Tara could be the fast friend Less needs.
Now Luann can claim to have had three daring experiences in her life – attending a notorious NY nightclub, attending a monster truck rally, and attending a wild party full of young people drinking, smoking pot, and having sex – without actually spending more than 5 minutes in each, and without actually partaking in the experience! Luann now can claim to her grandkids that she had a wild and crazy youth, without actually having done so!
Next time, why not just have Jack wear a sweatshirt with “SUPERHERO” across the chest? We need to make character’s this re-boot less subtle, people. How about red boots and a cape?
What did Luann think this party was gonna be like, anyway? And this just shows how low-stakes this strip is: Jack rushes in to save Luann from a lame party and obnoxious people, rather than any legitimate danger. At this point the writer is well aware of it too and is choosing to draw attention to it with Jack’s thought bubble. Good for a joke, but like Luann’s intelligence level and the jokes made at her expense, going to that well too often has a cumulative effect.
A typical looking late evening college party. I can fully understand Luann’s reticence here. Back long ago when I was in college, I found these sorts of parties uncomfortable. For me, the larger, and more crowded the party became, the isolated and alone I felt. I think it is a common sort of feeling for folks who tend to be more introverted. For me, it was always far more enjoyable to have a “party” with only a few close friends.
Other thoughts:
1. With Tara not immediately in the picture today, it could mean nothing…. or perhaps it could mean that Tara has ventured off, leaving Luann, and may be getting into some trouble herself.
2. It will be interesting to see what Greg has happen…. will Jack arrive to get Luann… and then will the two of them leave Tara to her own devices? Or might some sort of problem with Tara come to the forefront and Jack could be put in the position of having to defend/protect Tara?
3. If Tara is getting into trouble in tomorrow’s panels… it is likely the arc will continue next week.
Dancing kid with the spike ‘do reminds me of one of the dancers in Charlie Brown’s Christmas.
Interesting P.C. take-away from this episode. I wonder if Greg did it on purpose? Premise: Women don’t need men to look after them. (I am woman, hear then roar — Helen Reddy). Jack is trying to convince himself of that chapter & verse from the P.C. handbook. But look what happens when Luann feels threatened. Does she smack Mr. Beerbreath and call a cab? Nope. She instinctively calls Mr. Big Niceguy, Mr. Jack Safeguy; however she sees him. (A woman without a man, is like a woman stuck at an “epic party” without a ride? — Tyge)
How safe is your late-night Uber driver?
Where’s Tara with the car keys? Why doesn’t Lu seek her out?
Interesting quote from a commenter last week: Chivalry didn’t die a natural death, it’s being slowly killed off by those it meant to serve and protect.
You know, I can’t help but think what would Tiffany be doing right now if SHE had went WITH the threesome on this “Monster Truck Date?”
I suspect she would be having the time of her life at this gig as she’s no stranger to parties like this. Or so she says.
But here’s the thing: What will Jack and Luann talk about in the pickup truck on the way back home?
Will Jack admit that he SHOULD have Gone with them?
Will Luann admit that She SHOULDN’T have gone?
Will Jack take Lu to His place for COFFEE and just to talk?
Tomorrow may be the second time the Luann and Jack will have been alone together. The bowling date was with Nil and Bernice. The Dog Park date was in a public place BOTH times. “Three” was a “crowd” with the monster truck date, Pizza Date ended with a flat. So unless this Arc ends tomorrow, things may get “revealing” next week.
There have been comments on this site about ‘chivalry’ in the context of women not needing to be protected in this ‘hear me roar’ world. This only results from a very vague understanding of what ‘chivalry’ really was. The so-called ‘chivalric code’ (which wasn’t really written anywhere) was a code of conduct developed around 1170 AD in medieval Europe, had to do with the institution of knighthood, and had its roots in the Holy Roman Empire. It started with military bravery, individual training and service to others. (The word origin is from the Old French term for horse soldier ‘chevalerie’) Over time, the meaning evolved to include the way a pious, G-d fearing knight or a gentleman would treat others, including women and people who were not knights or nobility.
Those of us who like archaeology and history keep track of such things…
So far – G & K are begging the question. Luann is not likely to get assaulted. I don’t think that guy has ever got lucky. What if Luann got scooped up by the guy who is being intimate with the blonde? I’m not at all sure Luann would be calling Jack. With respect to the guy currently all over Luann, she’s probably telling Jack, “…and bring a fly swatter.”
Looks like Luann’s real problem is that she’s dressed like a 1960 preppie showing off her “Inner Beauty”, and nobody will pay any attention to her except for that dork. It’s no wonder that he was so thrilled that the girls would come along to the party – he already knew he had no chance with the fine ladies in panel 3.
My guess is Jack will rescue both Luann and Tara. Tara might be drunk or stoned and about to do something she would regret. So Jack can be a hero to both Luann and Tara. That would keep the plot going with respect to who will wind up with Jack, if anybody.
I am reminded of a great film “Baby It’s You,” directed by John Sayles. In the movie, Roseanna Arquette is about Luann’s age and starting to sort out life. Very wonderful acting and directing. I think it’s available on Amazon DVD, and maybe Netflix.
How was Luann planning to get home? Jack said he had an early morning so he could be sleeping if Luann decided to stay at the party a few hours. Both women should have had safe plans to return home before they went to the party.
I really was expecting something a lot more shocking than this party scene, which looks pretty typical for a college party (except I seem to remember the public make-out scenes happening more at high school parties, presumably because the couples either had something to prove or nowhere private to go).
Well! That looks like an unseemly party! Smoking, drinking, public displays of affection! And… worst of all -- a girl with a radical haircut! What if she is a (dramatic pause…..) lesbian? That might put Luann in to the (dum dum dummm…) real world! But sarcasm aside, I wouldn’t want to be there either…! :-D Good call, Luann!
The day would not be complete without Royal Gee BlueIndigoViolet telling us all yet again what a loathsome creature his Royal selfieness finds the viewpoint character to be, and using the pleasant, charm school words of his soulmate on ArcaMax to do that. And yet Mr. Important keeps coming back here, even knowing what a hateful creature the main character is …
I recall how Jack was dissed early on; now everyone seems on board with thinking he’s a good guy. I wonder if the fact that he was portrayed with bulging muscles, a tee shirt and a couple of day’s growth on his face had anything to do with that. Think about that, people.
Our Little Nell is about to be untied from the railroad tracks by the brave hero, Dudley Doright! Hooray!!! Will he be rewarded with a kiss, or will she just wave good-bye when she arrives home and jumps from his truck? To find out, stay tuned for more of our melodrama next week!
In Fantasyland, Jack would rescue Luann and they would be so turned on by the adventure, they’d rekindle the date and go somewhere else (like the back of the truck.) In real life, Luann would pout, blame Jack, fold her arms across her chest, and demand to be taken home.
Luann looks more annoyed than anything. she thought it would be an opportunity to meet other people, not this scene where everyone is paired off and she’s stuck with the fat dork with a perpetual grin on his face. Thank god for cell phones at a time like this.
Tara may already BE home. She said those guys were her “roommate’s buds,” and the guy just said “epic party at the house.” He didn’t specify WHOSE house. Could be the house Tara shares with her roommate, in which case all she’ll need to do is kick a few over-exuberant party goers out of her bedroom and lock the door.
Also if Jack picked her up there for the truck show, he knows where she lives.
I really like Jack. Really like him. A friend, a gentleman, motivated, has lots of interests…not the dumb jock we first saw. I would like to see where a Jack + Luann relationship would go.
