My sole connections to baseball are the novel “Summerland” and Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I assume that if Captain Sisko likes baseball, it’s got value. But organized sports and I have a mutual nonaggression pact.

I’ve never thought of it as a reason to sit and pet the cats, though! This is a new and promising field in my understanding of sport!

Puck reminds me of a friend’s cat. We were watching a car race on TV and he kept trying to catch the cars when they came off the side of the screen.

Sunday Funday!!!! Ok, the Mega-Orb gives so much, I’d like to give back to the Orb, but of course, I can’t do it alone. Since soon we will no longer need a spoiler zone, I think if we had a designated spot each week for folks to share something fun, great news, a funny story, a joke, anything. This is not to prescribe that this is the only place or time to do it, if you have great news or something to share at anytime, by all means DO so!

Research has shown that if you regulary journal about what makes you happy, or what you’re grateful for, these things tend to increase in your life. Part of that is that when you look for it, you see it, it registers more deeply, and if you share it, it enlivens us all!!! I look forward to our Mega-Orb community everyday, but I would love to have a place I could go to look for a bunch of uplifting, funny, happy news.

Folks seemed to like the idea so lets keep trying!! Just like the spoiler zone, whoever thinks of it first on a Sunday should start it, even if you don’t have something to share!!!

Once when I attended a Philly’s game, a fly ball bounced into my section. I surprised myself by pouncing on it. I didn’t have it for long. A guy I worked with pried it out of my hand. Afterwards he gave it to the kid who had vacated his seat when the ball hit. The boy seemed appreciative. He had a broken arm.

Cricket is very drawn out – matches are often played over days, not hours. Though patriotism does demand I wish England well today against New Zealand in the world cup final.

We once lived on a golf course suit a severely elevated green. When watching a tournament, we saw a golfer neatly landed a ball on the green, we saw a brown blur streak across the green and bat it into the trap. Nikki, the cat in my avatar had gotten out and was having a ball. This happened for the rest of the foursome before I could scramble out and grab him. Fortunately, the green was so elevated they couldn’t see what happened, but the look on their faces when they came up was hilarious.

I had a drama queen cat who would get fascinated by shots of long fly balls or balls rolling in the outfield. She would watch and try to resist but finally try to swat it with her paw. Then she would be so embarrassed that she got tricked again and look around quickly to see if anyone noticed. I would look down and pretend I didn’t see her shame. She would then walk away with an attitude like she didn’t care about that stupid ball. It was so hard not to laugh. She never looked at the TV except for baseball.

From that classic picture, Field of Dreaming for 22 Hours

I was out digging in the yard putting in tomato plants, like I’ve done for countless springs before. Nothing unusual ever happened until that day when I heard the voice, “If you feed her, she will stay.”

I couldn’t believe my ears. It was a hot day out, maybe I need a cool glass of water. Or better yet, iced tea. I went in to pour myself a glass, and when I came out, there she was. A tiny gray and white tabby kitten with huge gold eyes. I knew where she lived, because I had seen her at the house in back of mine. I took her back to them, and when I got up the next morning, there she was again.

“If you feed her, she will stay.”

Finally the Lady Who Lived in Back said, “Why don’t you just keep her yourself?” I glanced at the box with the beach towel in it, the bowl of kitten kibble and said, “I just don’t know if I’m ready for a kitten.” Jodie the Kitty just followed me in the house and stayed for the next 18 years.

“You must feed me right away.”

This is how my parents became the proud staff of a charming cat. When I came down to visit, she graciously accepted scritches and treats from me and informed my mom and dad they could keep me.

I completely agree with Elvis. I learned to hate baseball at a very early age. It always preempted my favorite cartoons. Then my early experience with Little League was horrible, as was my first experience in a ball park (sweat, dehydration, sunburn, and boredom). I also note that my father always took a nap when watching baseball or golf. Baseball is watching 8 men stand around, chew, spit, and scratch while a ninth occasionally throws a ball at the tenth guy who ignores it or tries to hit it. Very rarely, he does, a few of the chewers, spitters, and scratchers actually move for maybe a minute.

Frankly, I’d rather watch golf, which is both mentally and physically challenging, and more happens in a given amount of time. Fortunately, we have these wonderful things called books which are a far better form of entertainment if you are a non-golfer.

Ironically, later in life I discovered I could hit any softball pitch, over or underhand, in or out of the strike zone, anywhere within reach. All that practice with a katana. Our company team did everything they could to recruit me. I said I’d rather take a nap.

Sorry to run off at the keyboard. Must be the steroids from the epidural I got on Friday.

I guess I’m glad my TV is up high and there’s no issue of this!

When my recovering-feral Gandalf came down to explore carefully while I was watching, he first found out that there are tiny objects to accompany the sound. And they’re moving! He sat, jaw (literally) dropped, for a couple moments before going to the window to check out the view. Then he saw the bullying clowder out there, and ran back upstairs.

Since then, he has realized there’s no gushy food involved with the telly so it’s uninteresting. He’s also realized that inside is nice and the clowder bullies can’t get him, so he sits in the window and says “neener neener”.

Angel, on the other hand, cares not one whit about the TV except that it means I’ll be sitting down and can give her some pettins.

This one would make more sense to me if the woman were watching test cricket (but that is five days long). So, that is what I imagine in my head. The only changes that would need to be made are: replace the word baseball with cricket and in panel three, Puck would need to say “Ok… let’s take it to gully.”

Also, congratulations the English among us for winning the ODI World Cup. It was a close one and NZ put up a good fight but was pipped at the post.

OMCOMCOMC ELVIS IS MY STEPDAD!!! My mom LOVES baseball, but he described it as “about as exciting as watching paint dry.” So he’d leave her to it & watch his shows online or on the TV upstairs.

My oldest niece moved to Boston & became a HUGE Red Sox fan when she got married. She & hubby & 4 kids all get dressed up in Red Sox gear & go to a game every so often. Sis goes along when she’s up there, & she sends back the most adorable pix!

Roger Angell in his New Yorker columns writes of baseball as an existential thing best viewed in something like a meditative state. George Carlin contrasts baseball as a timeless (literally) game in a pleasant nostalgic setting with football as a mean, nasty struggle full of death and war metaphors. Foxy rolls on her back and watches it upside down.
