Tara’s “sculpture” appears to be animated – in the first panel, it has a grumpy face, in the second panel, it is smiling, and in the last panel, it is sticking out it’s tongue. Take a close look…
I think Tara’s explanation will be understood and appreciated by Prof. Zebo – and no one else, including Luann and the rest of the class (and us readers too)…
Well, Tara. You finally showed your true color. Posturing. Smart assery. Mocking. Comebackship. Pretentious. All this to just tell Luann to piss off. Geez. It would be much simpler to just say “Zebo did not deliver a clear assignment. All I can do is show him what I do best” and leave him that paper sculpture. Now, Luann. You sure you still want Tara for a friend? IMHO, she’s not worth it.
Seems like Tara lifted some of Zebo’s lines from here & there. Zebo played with Luann the last few days – can he take on Tara? I didn’t think I would find myself rooting for Zebo – but here goes.
We really have so little background on Tara – how she got in trouble at Mooney – where she lives – any family around – does she have a job. Maybe a falling out with Luann will be followed by a tearful confession.
I hate to give Tara credit…she’s cleverly good at being hateful and getting away with it. What blame is there in calling Luann a “Teachass?” She’s just abbreviating Teacher Assistant, right? And her BS explanation of her artistic intent is an skillful mimicry of Zebo’s “deep essence” assignment presentation.I’d like to see Zebo swoop in tomorrow to somehow put her in her place…but I have a dreadful feeling this story line is going to sadly enable more obnoxious one-upmanship with Tara as the victor as it lingers on into next week.I think I’d rather watch Irma and Mr. Gray sit side-by-side in front of the TV for a week.
Now let’s not all jump on the “Everybody hate Tara” bandwagon. I swear, the readers of the strip can be the most hateful of all the commenters I have read on this website. People like this are the reason the writer of “1 Chickweed lane” decided to block any comentators.
Okay, that being said, Tara does have many questionable qualities. As do everyone else in this strip. (And in life). Is Tara a smartass? Of course. And many times readers enjoy this. Most people enjoyed when Tara made fun of Zebo when he gave the assignment. But the second she made a comment to LuAnn, it was all “Boo!” , “You horrible person!” " Throw her off the strip! ". Quick aside; if LuAnn took the readers’ advise on dumping friends every time one of the made a disparaging comment, she and Bernice would have stopped being friends long ago. Bernie has been pretty snarky in the past. And not in a smartassery way like Tara does. But deliberately deprecating. But I digress.
A couple commentators noticed Tara’s explanation was more or less, repeating what Zebo said at the beginning of the assignment. Though everybody else only focused on the “teachass” comment. So is she mocking LuAnn? Or is she still mocking Zebo? My vote is on the latter. The ’’teachass", was her being a smartass. Which we have already established.
I think what’s annoying LuAnn, is that Tara’s rehashed explanation of her work, kinda kicked the ball back into her court. Which is now unsure what to do with. But again, LuAnn is missing the point. Zebo tasked her to show how Tara’s work was a mockery of the assignment. Tara’s explanation did that. So LuAnn actually succeeded. But she (and the readers) is too focused on an off-the-cuff jab to even notice. I wonder if Zebo is going to shock LuAnn by congratulating her on succeeding?
Luann, take my advice. With the animated faces on that sculpture, Tara must be controlling it, possibly making her somewhat of a wicken. Make sure you are not left alone with that Hellspawn thing after everyone else leaves, your life could be in danger…
Dodgy like I said, but the basic issue for Luann is how to respond, as a teacher, not as a friend, to Tara’s obvious smart mouth super sarcastic vacuous class presentation. If they can come out friends, or should they come out friends, given dodgy Tara’s attitude, that remains to be seen, which is a test for Luann. Hope she passes, and I hope Tara learns something.
Tara just explained herself. She said most people look at things one way and I look at it another way. I explored both ways and chose mine, meaning I rather create something original than spend all my time and talent creating a replica of something that already exists, She definitely makes you think, doesn’t she?
An interesting exchange that elicited a lot of reader comments and feelings. I think Tara picked up on why Luann called upon her to explain her “work of art” and, therefore, the attitude. So, I don’t think Tara really cares. As for friendship you don’t see strips with her actually hanging out with Luann as a real friend. The couple of strips where it looked like they would hangout, Tara doesn’t stay around very long. My take is Tara doesn’t have the best opinion of Luann irrespective of this current situation. Tara is one who pushes boundaries, Luann doesn’t. I also suspect Zebo may have anticipated something like this and is lurking out of sight, more interested in seeing how Luann ultimately handles the situation.
As for the Tara character in the strip, it may be that she ultimately goes away like many other characters or becomes another antagonist (but to a lesser degree) who Greg (and maybe Karen) find is easier to come up with story lines. It all ermains to be seen.
Tara eschewed the assigned -monochromatic – drawings and instead revealed her true colors. She mocks what she doesn’t understand. She makes up stuff rather than just telling the truth – which in this case would have been something like “I though the assignment was BS so that’s what I created.” And she’ll publicly mock a supposed friend – which of course invites other students to follow suit – If it’ll make herself look cooler.
Nil is a friend of both Luann and Tara. I wonder how he’ll react?
Tara is great. Luann planned to use her “power” and humiliate Tara and she failed. “Teachass” is obviously short for teacher assistant, also similar to misstress (female of master). And Luann deserved some good houmor pricking.
Like I said yesterday, a sociopath always finds a way out of a mess though obfuscation and attacking those that dare to expose them. Everyone in this strip has their quirks, we all do, but I think Ann & Tara are in the same league. Both rotten to the core.
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA Just Teenage Girls being petty, snarky, Teenage Girls. Their “Claws” are only Half on Display. I wouldn’t make too much of it….This too shall pass.
Actually this is a good explanation. She has fuse two different objects into one sculpture. But, despite everything, this still sounds like a joke to make fun of Luann. What grade will Zebo give to Tara?
The one being mocked is Zebo. Tara’s " explanation fits perfect with her art work and its’ purpose. Everybody got what they deserved. “Teachass” was a nice reminder to LuAnn to not let being a TA to Zebo turn her in to a pompous ass. Note, LuAnn got what Zebo assigned her to do by just asking.
Pure presence can take us beyond ordinary knowledge and penetrate its reifications, but the tendency for reification will remain. As long as the mind is present, and can recognize forms, it will reify them. It will even reify omnipresence, even though it is not a form with shape and size. To go beyond the tendency for reification we need to go beyond the mind that reifies, and beyond the concepts that can be reified. Freedom from reification can be total only when we do not see any concepts, only when we do not recognize any forms.
I wonder if Tara is….jealous? In their previous chemistry class, Tara declined accepting a TA position, citing it “lame” hence beneath her. Then Luann has a TA position with Zebo. Gotta wonder if all her posturing is jealousy. Irked her that Luann ignored her “lame” comment in their old Chemistry class and applied for TA spot with Zebo. Tara probably likes people who follow HER examples and takes down those who don’t.
1. Tara is obviously being rude and obnoxious. But…. to me, this seems beyond “over-the-top” even for her. In some ways this makes me wonder again if she has actually been “planted” here to purposefully be so obnoxious by Professor Zebo in order to get Luann to grow and develop? But, I have to admit, that if Zebo planted Tara here for this purpose…. it is still rather extreme.
2. If this is Tara just being her true self…. then I agree with the others here who think this should be an obvious end to Luann’s and Tara’s friendship. If this is the true Tara…. then I wouldn’t want to associate further with her.
3. Tara’s “gobbledygook” nonsense that she spouts may at first glance seem like she is replicating Professor Zebo’s own words…. but if you read through them and compare them to Zebo’s…. you can see that Tara’s are just nonsensical…. whereas Zebo’s actually say something (even though I grant they are somewhat convoluted) that is of merit.
4. Instead of “I’ll let you know, Miss Starr.” I really wish that Luann would have said something akin to “Ok, Miss Starr, if that is the best explanation, you can give, you may sit down.” leaving open the idea that it was crap…. and yet shutting it down so Tara could “stew” a bit.
Last, and certainly least, G&K took no time in making me eat crow. I had figured Tara as a “no show.” Pipe Tobacco says that this behavior seems out-of-line even for Tara. Hard to say.
Was Tara a “plant” by Zebo to help Luann learn? (That’s Pipe ’s posit) Hard to say. Her personality has always been to take from everybody and never give back. That is on full display here.
While we know that she was “called out” (for lack of a better word) for the television and vending machine at the Uni, we don’t exactly know what went on, other than Tara no longer attends Uni.
Could it be, when confronted with her misdeeds, little Miss Tara reacted exactly the same way she did here?
“Teachass” that’s knock the grade down to at least a D and kicked out of class….total disrespect for “teachass” and for Luann as a person – I doubt she’d call Zebo “Professass” I dislike Tara even more than I did when she first showed up in the strip
Tara is mocking both Zebo and Luann, e.g. by giving him back a version of himself, and the ‘teach-ass’ comment to Luann. Tomorrow… will Zebo be flattered by Tara’s imitation of him and give her an A+? … or not (I hope).
@Kittysquared: It is Greg’s little way to see how many of us here would use the word, “ass” on the board here today. I think he has been rather successful.
.
Meanwhile, 166 of us here will be banned by tomorrow.
Earlier in the week there was discussion of Zebo as Luann’s mentor and how he is getting her to think ‘out of the box’. I’d like to believe this episode is also a lesson for him, i.e. in seeing the difference between free intellectual thought and garden variety fraud.
While today’s episode is wrapped in a veil of snark, Luann should have replied, “Yes, Miss Starr – I am ‘Teachass’, and that is exactly what I’m doing; I’m teaching an ass.”
I didn’t think about it, but once someone mentioned that they think Tara is mimicking Zebo I have to agree. However, just like Zebo, it’s a bunch of hooey! Tara addressing Luann as teachass is uncalled for and quite offensive. I’ve known people like Tara all of my life, and while they can be fun occasionally, they are generally bad news. And in the classroom they are a huge pain in the neck.
What is it with you people? Tara makes a joke about Zebo’s teaching style and now your all up in arms? Have you forgotten Luanns high school days. She did the same thing all the time to her teachers! The only reason you get so mad at Tara is because you don’t like her so your going to make a big deal over everything. Tara’s comment to Luann should not have been said in front of the class but you cant deny that Luann was trying to embarrass her to prove a point to Zebo and this was a jerk move on her part. If anything, Luann is the one who started this whole thing by making a big deal over Tara’s joke.

@Kittysquared: It is Greg’s little way to see how many of us here would use the word, “ass” on the board here today. I think he has been rather successful.

Earlier in the week there was discussion of Zebo as Luann’s mentor and how he is getting her to think ‘out of the box’. I’d like to believe this episode is also a lesson for him, i.e. in seeing the difference between free intellectual thought and garden variety fraud.

Ok Lulu. Zebo gave you the opportunity to grade her work. Give her the effin’ F she deserves, “Teachass”.

While today’s episode is wrapped in a veil of snark, Luann should have replied, “Yes, Miss Starr – I am ‘Teachass’, and that is exactly what I’m doing; I’m teaching an ass.”

Luann went to the community college, right? Teaching assistants are normally graduate students earning their way through school. So how???

Tara went all Picasso on the assignment. I didn’t get it at first; she used both elements but reimagined them.
