Lupin and Elvis are Very Unhappy, Goldie is bemused and Puck is Jubilant! His day is being celebrated with a family photo and he loves it. Lupin and Elvis….furious, and I can understand it.
For anyone who wants to know… before we carved up pumpkins to remind us of the tale of a person who did a bad deal with the Devil… they carved scary faces out of turnups!
I just happened to look out my window and I saw the van with a smile on it and got really excited. I have received my Elvis Puffs Out. Can’t wait to give it a good look over. There are new paper dolls of Beatrix, Sophie, Baba Mouse and Trever and also the robber mice and Jules and a Tommybaum. Georgia posted some pictures from the Golden Mouse story and a nice tribute to her grandmother, https://www.instagram.com/p/CF_QRusJlsp/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link.
Georgia posted this on instagram – the back story of The Golden Mouse: breakingcatnewsTomorrow “Elvis Puffs Out” will be here!! Which means that “The Golden Mouse Saga” will be in print for the first time anywhere. I know many of the longtime readers of BCN have been waiting for this, I have too!
I wrote this story in the summer of 2016 when my grandmother Nana Dee Dee was passing away. I began it around the same time she entered the hospital. Originally it was going to be a gag about ‘The Owl and the Pussycat.’ As the days went on, the story changed directions and just poured out. It evolved into a tale about an ancient mouse hero, Agatha, and the plan she made to keep her descendants safe. The only mouse brave enough to face ‘the Wicked,’ she left behind a curse to protect future generations of mice, should the cunning owl ever foolishly return.
Ultimately, it became a story about the protective love of a grandmother for her grandchildren, and the cleverness of women looking out for their families (even after death). The advice grandmothers and mothers give daughters and granddaughters to keep them out of the clutches of those who might harm them—told by brave, funny mice ready to throw down and toss one real mean owl dude out of town.
Nana Dee Dee passed away a few days before the story ended, where it was paused on the original BCN site while I traveled back east. I told readers what was happening; they were incredibly kind and understanding. Two in particular went above and beyond, and I’m forever grateful to the Jones’ (thank you again, Hannah and David). I finished the story on the plane ride back east.
The story was a great comfort to me during that time. When I look back on it now, I see grief and death weaving in and out of the panels and the subject matter, bound tightly with love and hope. Hope that the love our grandparents have for us endears for generations; beyond us to our own children and to theirs, on and on. And that this love returns to
Elvis Puffs Out Day —Ours arrived this morning. I’ve already read it, and it’s even better than I expected!
Moλ⍵ν λαβε (Coming, take) or Come and Take It Day —This could be the universal day of defiance of the powerful by the smaller or weaker. I think it should be in late August or early September, to be closer to the date of the Battle of Thermopylae, the first recorded use of the phrase. The phrase can and should be used for other things besides weapons. I have it on my laptop, as a reminder that the freedom of speech must be defended.
National Badger Day —Wisconsinites are euphoric, though not as euphoric as they get over cheese. One has to admit that being called a badger is better than being called a cheesehead, which is only a compliment in Wisconsin. Today, you can badger someone from Wisconsin with more cheesy remarks. However, remember that badgers, while mostly easygoing, are real bears when provoked.
Garlic Lovers Day —"There is no such thing as “too much garlic.” There is only “not enough garlic” and “enough garlic.” Garlic’s only real failing as a food or seasoning is that it does not go well with chocolate. It does, however, go very well with bacon. Kling akhlami buhfik – Saavik-kam.
National Noodle Day —Noodles are a marvelous invention. I doubt if anyone knows for certain what civilization first invented noodles. However, it has been said that the Italians make every kind of noodle from just one thing, and the Chinese (or perhaps Asians, generally) make noodles from everything. There is more truth in that than not. I also note that the human brain does resemble a mass of boiled noodles … … … for some, the resemblance is near perfect.
Yay!!! I just got my copy of “Elvis Puffs Out” and I look forward to brewing a cup of tea and diving in!!!! Best early birthday present ever! This will make my bad week better!!!
Go Comics has made some sort of change to their header so that the only way I can get to “Notifications” is to shrink the page down so small that I can’t read the print. They not only ignore the things that need to be fixed—they break things that were just fine the way they were.
Georgia just posted an announcement "Hello, everyone!! Join me for a spooky (fun spooky, not scary spooky) evening next week! I’m giving a live talk virtually over Zoom on October 15th at 7pm Eastern time/4pm Pacific! Just in time for Halloween, I’ll be discussing what makes a good ghost story and explore some of the ghostly characters in BCN enjoying their tenth lives in the halls of the Big Pink House! Tillie, Winnifred Quinn, the Golden Mouse—and of course the spectral kitties of our favorite ghost radio station RCO!I’d love if you could make it, it should be a good, spooky time! This is an event that folks need to register for, so the library can email folks the invitation to the Zoom meeting! Email (staff@crossmills.org) or call Cross Mills Library to register as soon as you can. (Fun fact—Trevor’s Woman is the librarian and library coordinator making this happen! Give her a hello!!)
I guess Puck is just happy he’s not a ladybug again. He seems to be OK with food-inspired costumes, just like he was the year he was pepperoni pizza. And hey Lupin, at least this year you’re not the odd cat out costume-wize.
My cat Ziggy left us today. At the age of 19, we had to put him to sleep due to disease. He’s in a happier place now, still annoyed at us for not giving him five meals a day, every day, which is what he always seemed to want. Now that I think about it, Ziggy was sort of a combination of Lupin, Puck, and Elvis. He had Elvis’s temper, was deaf like Lupin, and had black fur and only three legs like Puck. Our other cat, Eggs, is clearly missing his buddy, so we’re giving him tons of love. All my family is going to miss him, I mean, he was even older than me!Bye Ziggy! I love you!

He lies right down, will not get up again
You are never gonna live this down (3x more)
He wears a bumble suit, he wears a business suit
He wears a thunder shirt, but not a pumpkin suit
He thinks the thoughts that remind him of the good times
He sings the songs that remind him of the best times
(Oh Elvis dude, Elvis dude, Elvis dude)
He lies so prone, (we’ll be singing)
And won’t get up again (hissing the night away)
You’re never gonna live this down (with the ‘tude he’s bringing)
(repeat over and over then fade out)
(Judith Abbott / Nigel Hunter / Paul Greco / Louise Watts / Alice Nutter / Darren Hamer / Allan Whalley / Duncan Bruce – Tubthumping – Chumbawamba)

I’m thinking about the BCN wrestling events and the wacky costumes.
I think one of the boys should modify one of these pumpkin costumes for next time.
Remember the legendary wrestler Gorgeous George?
Well, being that this is the estimable Ms. Dunn’s artistic arena, the Cat in the Pumpkin suit would be Georgia’s Gourd.
OK. Sorry. I’ll stop now.
